Well, my Kodak CF/PC Card adapter is literally and figuratively golden for me.
Not a lick of trouble either on my Wallstreet II "PDQ" or my ThinkPad 600E.

I think these are pretty simple electrically, because basically there is an
IDE controller onboard the Compact Flash card. On other kinds of Flash, like
Memory Sticks, SD/MMC, SmartMedia and so on, there is no controller,
therefore the adapter has to be a bit more sophisticated. Probably a generic
card will serve you well.

I have a PC/Cardbus card question of my own, but I will ask it in another
message.

Take care,
Michelle

It was a long shot, but one I thought was worth trying.

One more suggestion. Have you looked at any 3rd-party OS X
calculators? I have seen a few, but right now I can't suggest
anything specific. If you want to see if someone else's calculator
will work with the keypad, go to Google/mac.html and search on "OS X"

Hope you come up with something.

Exactly correct as mentioned by others already. I tend to run with the
battery installed,
in case of a power outage (the bane of desktops). I need a new battery
(expensive in Oz)
but the old one has about 15-20 minutes of life, which I suppose is
enough for it
to act as a UPS in case the power goes off ... a graceful
shutdown/sleep is better
in the long run. (Of course I should have a real UPS and a new battery

around a lot and have enough stuff to lug already!). Thinking about
going wireless

new PowerMac G5 list

2004-05-18 Thread Christoph Hammann
Hello fellow Macintosh enthusiasts!
Sorry for cross-posting this to the Apple mailinglists I subscribe to,
but I thought some of you might be interested:
I noticed a lack of conventional mailing lists about PowerMac G5
computers, so I made one available. Information about how to subscribe
is in the footer. Sorry, there's no web interface for that as of now.
The PowerMac G5 list's language will be English, though I have it
hosted in Germany. It is a closed list (posting only allowed to
subscribed members) and it is unmoderated (your posts go to the list
right away), please consider netiquette rules.

I very much look forward to contributions from all with questions and
solutions regarding Apple's PowerMac G5 computers!

How long did you have it? It could be the battery running out, but since
it's a 17", I would think something else is at cause, like the PMU.

"No Batteries Available" - PB G4 17"

2004-05-18 Thread Anne Judge
My 17" powerbook has just started claiming it has no battery installed,
though it does. It can even run off the battery while claiming it has
no battery!! (But it shuts down very ungracefully when - I presume -
the battery runs down.)

Does anyone know what can cause this in this model?
The one way I've figured out to get it to see its battery is to pull it
out and snap it back it - a pain since it's on the bottom, plus it
doesn't work all the time any more (or for very long when it does
work).

I've tried restarting, resetting the PMU (using Apple's instructions
for this powerbook), and using the battery update software from Apple's
site (which isn't described as solving this problem - in fact, the I
only remember seeing the "x through the battery" problem mentioned in
conjunction with WallStreets, and couldn't find any mention of it
happening to Aluminum G4s). None of these helped.

It should be under warranty still, and definitely has a CompUSA
extended warranty (I got the floor model from there), but CompUSA is
inconvenient to me - over an hour - and I wanted to know if anyone here
had an idea what the problem might be (battery? PMU? other?) before I
check out the local Apple repair site or hit the road for CompUSA.

Re: Mac CD-RW Burners (For Powerbook G4?)

2004-05-18 Thread Jeff Greffe

You wrote about "sites that describe how to make your own bracket" and
I have spent 45 min trying to find one ... no luck !

Any idea where I could find this info ?
Thanks ,
Jeff
Actually there are lots of slot loading slim drives (Combos and
DVD-R/Ws),
but as JSH points out, the problem is the bracket for powerbooks that
shipped without a Combo. The aftermarket drives are smaller than the
original DVD and require said bracket. The companies that sell the
"kit"
charge an arm and a couple legs, but the installation is greatly
simplified.
There are sites that describe how to make your own "bracket" and save
some
cash. Should be noted that bare 4x DVD burners (the Matshita UJ-825)
cost a
lot less than companies' 1x or 2x burners with the kit (e.g. $260-is
vs.
$330-350). If you're handy with aluminum sheet, go for it. As JSH
points
out, the slot-loaders can also be fitted in Pismos. I've got a Matshita
UJ-815B in mine. Very cool looking, plus no worries re. making the
faceplate
fit.
