Re: Wireless Condo. . .

2004-06-18 Thread Paul Kurtz
Let's see...

You will likely need to set up the router to send the DSL modem your name
and password to log onto the network, and your router may, or may not do
this, even with an upgrade. Most do, but I'm not sure about some older
ones.

I would suggest keeping the router, since it's setup, working, and likely
provides some firewall protection. I think it's also necessary to send the
dsl modem your password info.

Finally, you can share the printer by connecting it to a mac and sharing it
over the network, or you could hook it up to a usb print server and connect
it to the router. You could also connect it to the airport BS if it's a new
one with usb.

 Hello all,

I have been living in my wireless condo for almost two years now. .
.the setup is a PowerMac G4, PowerBook (Pismo), iBook (snow), and a 17
PowerBook G4. The iBook is my roomates. All of these computers; with
the exception of the PM G4, have an Airport (b) installed in them all
running Panther 10.3.4. Each have a gig of RAM and are used almost
24/7. I have several clients/friends who come over from time to time
and they've got their ibooks, powerbooks, and laptops (yea. . .PC's
actually ARE in my life!) and they already have their computers
configured to work with my Airport base station. In otherwords,
someone could walk right onto my deck, whip out their portable computer
and after turning it on they are connected automatically via broadband.

Now, here's the question. My source for the internet is going to
change. I am currently with Charter Communications who provided my
cable modem. I'm having issues with their customer service and am
tired of them screwing up my bill every month. I have already given
the go with Earthlink DSL. Supposedly, they have stated they can offer
the same speed of 3Mbps down and 384kbps up for only $34.95 a month.
Sounds good but surfing is believing right? What I need to know is
what I will be needing to do to my router, if anything, to get this new
DSL modem up and running. There's going to be changes to the hardware
 as well.

Right now the system is as follows: Cable modem (Charter), to Linksys
Router. PowerMac G4 and the Airport Station are connected to router.
The other computers are connected via Airport.

The new setup will not include the PowerMac G4, and have the DSL modem
instead of Cable, along with the Airport station and the mentioned
Power/i/laptops. Will I need to update firmware in my router? Or do I
even need the router anymore? Can the DSL modem simply plug directly
into the Base Station? Also, what type of setup is recommended to
share my Epson printer in this network? Before, nobody needed to
print, but now it's become second nature for printing. Just wondering
folks. . .will figure it out eventually, but I figured I'd throw this
question out to this list, since everyone in this list is like me. .

Pismo Boot CD, wireless, etc.

2004-06-18 Thread Dan Colwell
A few things:
I use BootCD (v0.6) for OS X. Up until recently there was no OS X
version, but I just tried it again and although it took some time (6+
minutes), it worked. (another reason for me not to partition...)

I have an airport card and a Belkin wireless router with an iMac and my
son's PC hooked up through ethernet. It took calling their tech support
for my Pismo to recognize the router (needed to use channel 7) but it
works great for $49 from Best Buy. I second the opinion that b is
plenty fast. I see no reason for me to upgrade to g speed and I like
the fact that nothing is sticking out of the side of my laptop.

Now for a couple of questions that I think have been covered before but
I need a refresher:

Is there anything I can do about the pink tinge on the bottom left-hand
corner of my screen? I replaced the upper plastics of the bottom of my
computer and noticed the coloring immediately after. Maybe just be the
age of my machine or did I damage some component? I took it pretty much
all apart to replace the PCMCIA cage.

And lastly, should I encrypt my home wireless system? Anything hard
about setting up WEP? If I just follow the instructions will I be OK? I
seem to remember something about using a specific symbol for Macs...

Oh and one more... Over on the PowerList there was quite a bit of
difference of opinion about using someone else's wireless connection. I
was at my daughter's soccer game and sitting on the sidelines I could
pick up 3 different wireless connections from the nearby neighborhood.
Am I at risk to use these to get online? (I did... surfing the net at
halftime on a spring day from a comfortable chair made up for the fact
we lost the game...somewhat...)

Thanks for any info,

will need to plug it into the PCMCIA slot of your Pismo.

I haven't heard about any 3rd party 802.11g card that works in OS X
right
now. That is not to say that it doesn't exist, but I haven't heard
about
any. You could check the driver of IOExpert.com. They sell a driver
that
supports a wide range of 802.11b card in OS X. Maybe they do support
802.11g
cards as well, I don't know.

I think that it will be hard to find anything 802.11g for OS 9. The OS
hasn't been updated in over 2 years and Apple has clearly stated that
it's a
dead-end. So, most manufacturers and software developers focus their
resources for OS X and you're more likely to get support for 802.11g
for OS
X only. However, you do have to remember that with OS X having maybe
2% or
3% of the computer market, few wireless equipment makers provide
drivers
even for OS X. That's where IOExpert might come handy...

Hi Laurent and all,
I hesitate to contribute further to this long thread, BUT, I have
spoken to Buffalo (UK) this a.m. and their Tech guys say that a
Buffalo WLI-CB-G54A Airstation PCMCIA Card (802.11g and backwards
compatible to 802.11b) will work in a Pismo G3/400, running Mac OS X,
as Airport and Buffalo use the same chipset, hence the Airport
software is OK, and no drivers needed. (Hope they're right for me and
anyone else who decides to go this way!)
Based on this, I have bought one for my Pismo G3/400 Mac OSX 10.3.3)

You do this dance with any other different brand of memory stick that's

happen sequentially for each of two of the same n=model sandisk sticks
that were inserted.

All of that was useless. I don't NEED to know that the computer found
new hardware...it's *supposed* to do that; I expect that of it. It said
on the package that this was a certified plug and play device.

I should only be told if there's a *problem*. None of all of that dance
was necessary information for the user.

But Microsoft seems to feel this desperate need to continually inform

Sometimes, I think they secretly hired Dave Barry as their Human

You will find that the mac largely just gets the heck out of your way
and lets you work, only interrupting you if you need to make a
decision. (note throughout that entire USB Stick dance, no decision is
required of the user)

This is not to say that things don't break, or mysteriously not work at

Powerlogix Pismo upgrade

2004-06-18 Thread Leslie Burkholder
Powerlogix has a new upgrade available for the Pismo CPU. The new upgrade is
a G3 750gx running at 900mhz with 1mb internal L2 cache. An old upgrade
available from Powerlogix was a G3 750fx running at 800 or 900mhz with
.512mb internal L2 cache

No performance benchmarks comparing these are available on the Powerlogix
website. Are there any available anywhere? Has anyone any guesses about what
such a comparison would look like? Would the 750gx be 10% faster than the
750fx? 25%? 05%?

Thanks
Leslie Burkholder

Powersupply for my TiBook 550mhz

2004-06-18 Thread Gabriel Diamond
Hello List,
I am looking for an economical replacement for Apple part 611-0304
Powersupply for my TiBook 550mhz..
I'm also interested in doubling the ram to a Gigabyte, adding an
airport card, and maybe adding bluetooth...
I love the idea of using my cell phone and PowerBook in tandem.

Thanks you all for the helpful information,
Gabriel

brute force adj.: Describes a primitive programming style, one in which the

brute-force programs are written in a heavyhanded, tedious way, full of
repetition and devoid of any elegance or useful abstraction (see also brute

powerbook/ibook reccomendation?

2004-06-18 Thread Andrew King
Hello list
I've been commissioned to find a MAC powerbook or ibook for my sister.
She's an artist and needs a little more power than the 520 powerbook
for word processing, spread sheets, photo editing and e-mail/web browsing.
I had been thinking an ibook might provide more horsepower per doller.
She's not inclined to poke around inside so i figured that if I got a
decent ibook she wouldn't need to upgrade it.
However a little looking around Low End Mac suggests that most (all?)
ibooks come without PC card slots which I am very fond of.
So I'm back to considering an older powerbook.
I'd like to be able boot to OS 9, I think that's what's on her
computers at work (she's not sure).
CD drive is required, CD burner would be nice but could be external.
Floppy drive would be nice, could be external.
Battery life is not a huge issue, this will be used as a desktop
computer most of the time.
She has a dial up ISP so built in ethernet or wireless is not
particularly useful.
Reliability is probably more important than performance, she's in Santa
Barbara CA and I'm in Michigan so I can't easily pop over and swap out
parts.
Any thoughts? Recomended vendors?

Thanks
Andrew in Ann Arbor

 Hello list

So, I'm guessing you use WINDOWS? Most of us on this list use Macs. All
modern computers have a MAC.

She's an artist and needs a little more power than the 520 powerbook
for word processing, spread sheets, photo editing and e-mail/web browsing.
I had been thinking an ibook might provide more horsepower per doller.

You may be right that an iBook would suit her quite well. You may be very
fond of PC card slots but since Mac notebooks are full featured we find we
don't need them. PowerBook or iBook the computer will have USB, NIC, modem
and be able to have an airport card installed. Except for the original iBook
they'll also have firewire and video out. That pretty much obviates the need
for a PC card.

So I'm back to considering an older powerbook.

There are lots of happy Pismo and Wallstreet owners so that is a possible
computer...but so is an iBook.

I'd like to be able boot to OS 9, I think that's what's on her
computers at work (she's not sure).

If she isn't sure and she's been using a Mac for some years, she probably is
still using 8 or 9. For the last year or so most new Macs haven't been OS 9
bootable, but most of the G3 dual USB iBooks (the white ones) have booted
into OS 9.

CD drive is required, CD burner would be nice but could be external.
Floppy drive would be nice, could be external.

CD drive isn't an issue...all G3 and G4 model notebooks have a built in CD
drive and I wouldn't advise buying anything older if you are looking to
replace a 520 with something more powerful.

Battery life is not a huge issue, this will be used as a desktop
 computer most of the time.
She has a dial up ISP so built in ethernet or wireless is not

There are risks to buying an older computer and that risk is compounded with
a notebook mostly because repairs are vastly more expensive. I know lots of
Pismo and Wallstreet owners who are very happy...some are using these older
machines without ever having any problems while others have replaced
numerous parts. Owners of the clamshell iBooks also tend to be quite happy
with their machines. This is evidenced by the premium prices these machines
still command.

As to venders...Smalldog gets a big thumbs up from me.

If Classic mode would work instead of booting into OS 9, try one of
the G4 iBooks. Apple has refurb units, with full warranty, for $779
(12/800) and $889 (14/933). I have had very good luck with the Apple
Store refurb units over the years. I just bought one of the 12 800
units and you would never have known it wasn't new. Then I added an
additional 512MB RAM and I should be set for a few more years.

An internal CDRW for Wallstreet powerbook

2004-06-18 Thread Matt Patoray
Hi all,
I have been wondering if it is possible to install a PC type CDRW drive
in the case for the 20x CD-ROM drive in a wallstreet G3 powerbook?

And if so what models do you recommend.
