Re: Using iBook Airport With Wi-Fi Network

I'm not exactly sure how it works in Panther, but in Jaguar you need to set
up the airport card's network settings under network in the system prefs.

 Okay, I'm stumped. I've got an just-obtained iBook 700 (OS X --
 10.1.3) with
built-in Airport card. I'm having no success connecting it to my local
network, which the Airport card sees as an Airport Network. I select
 my
local Wi-Fi network name and put in the 10-character WEP password.
 After a
pause, the iBook says I've entered the wrong password. Searches
 through the
built-in Help menu offer no clues.

PBG4 to PC monitor?

2004-07-08 Thread Timothy Luoma
I have an old (5-6 year) PC monitor that I would like to use with my
Powerbook as a second desktop (mainly for Virtual PC).

The only port on the Powerbook is a DVI, and the PC monitor has a
different connector on it (I don't know what it is called, but it's the
normal PC monitor connector which has been popular for some time).

Is there a way to use these together, or do I need to get a new monitor?

Bluetooth for Pismo / OS9?

2004-07-08 Thread Pete Gregory
Greetings,
I have just acquired a bluetooth gsm cellphone (Ericsson T610) and was
wondering if I could hook it up to my pismo. I've seen some
USB-Bluetooth adapters but not the information as to whether they have
Mac (pref OS9 X) drivers.

Also, is there any cheap/free software for driving the phone/syncing etc?
If the answer is all OSX only, I may be getting that - currently
dithering over Panther now or Tiger next year. (And how to tell the
wife what happened to $120).
Thanks,
Pete.

I don't have any personal experience with GSM and bluetooth, but from what
I've read and what one of my friend did, in OS X, bluetooth is built-in, no
matter if it is an internal card or a USB device. I could be wrong on this,
but I've read information that this is how it works in OS X.

Still in OS X, the Sync application in Panther seems to have the
capability of synchronizing cellphones.

I don't know anything about OS 9. Since Bluetooth is relatively new in the
mainstream and since OS 9 hasn't been updated in close to 4 years now, I
would imagine that not a lot of drivers exist for it...

Hello,
All Elgato products are awsome. . .BUT be sure to read the system
requirements for each EyeTV. These devices require an enormous amount
of HDD space to record shows. I use the EyeTV USB model, which uses
640 megs for a one hour episode of Alias or 330 megs for a 30 minutes
episode of Family Guy. (As you can see, I use mine for QUALITY
entertainment. . .hehe.) Anyway, the newer firewire models require a
minimum of an average of 2 gigs of space for your typical show, so keep
that in mind, and you really need a min of a G4 500 to get decent
performance out of it. These are but a few examples as to why I went
with the lesser USB model. The only real cool thing about the 300 is
the DVB-S digital broadcast tuner. The only downside to this is
availability. It's not in my area yet. . .so if you get one and it is,
let me know how the signal is, etc.

iBook Opinions

2004-07-08 Thread Run Vzel
All G3 iBooks are now covered by the repair extension program, which means Apple is
being forthright in saying that eventually, all G3 iBooks are likely to have the
issues covered by the program. That's commendable for Apple, but not for the G3
iBooks. I had several and all eventually went to screen and/or motherboard issues. I
also run tiBooks and alBooks--I like them much except their cases are not as durable
as iBook cases. I hear the G4 iBooks rock, case included.

Pat,

I have a 900mHz G3 iBook and I love it. I was my daily driver until I
got a great deal on a 1gHz TiBook. For most tasks, it's about 80-90% as
fast as the TiBook and is much more portable. If I didn't have to use
Virtual PC so much, I'd still be using the iBook every day. That's the
only program I use daily that was just too slow on the iBook. I'm
keeping it as my back-up and to use around the house as a spare.

I can't speak to anyone else's experience, but I've been nothing but
thrilled with my iBooks. We still have a 600mHz and 900mhz in the house
and both work flawlessly.

As usual, your mileage may vary. :-)

Congrats on a nice machine.
In the dock there is an icon for system preferences. There you will
find an icon for software update. You can have it check right now as
well as set it for routine checks for updates. If you are connected to
a broadband connection, you might as well bring it up current now.
