Under OS 9, 7.02 runs quite well when you can allocate a bunch of RAM to it (like 32 megs); in all versions of Netscape there's been a RAM threshold above which it will become much faster and more stable. IAC, your system at 96 megs is choked for RAM anyways. Bruce; Thanks for the input. I have tried using virtual memory with no improvement, then went to ram doubler with some success. I have set Netscape memory to 55 megs. Will monitor for a few days. Thanks again. Bill Virtual memory and ramdoubler will give you minor relief, but not a real fix. The best way to solve this is more physical RAM. a bump to 128MB or 192MB should do the trick. -Hal -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet G3 will not accept Netscape 7.02
Thanks for the suggestggions. I bought this computer (Wallstreet) to replace my wifes 1400. I wantged to load Nescape 7.02 as I had nothing but problems with 4.7. I just reformatted the HD WITH OS 8.1. I have OS 9.04 but when I start from the 9 CD and try to load the OS I get message that it will not run on this computer. I am beginning to believe this might be a SOUND problem as it will not play music CD,s or let you hear the Modem dialing. How do I test to determine why I cannot get any sound out of this machine. I allso have an Orange IBook with NO SOUND. Thanks for any and all suggestions. Cheers Warren - aka - yeoleman -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet G3 will not accept Netscape 7.02
You should check with another OS. I have a PowerBook Lombard wich hates OS 9. It has Video problems when watching DVDs and QuickTime movies (the screen crashes, and the DVDs skips, but the Screen can be fixed changing resolution, but the problem returns). When I replaced OS 9 for OS 8.6 all the problems gone. I've made every possible thing (erasing the HD, writting zeros and reinstalling everything 9.0.4, 9.1.1, 9.1.2, 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 on English and Spanish). My PowerBook works GREAT with OS 8.6. So I have OS X and OS 8.6 for DVD Playback and CD Burning (DVD Playback and CD Burning from a Sony Spressa USB Plus are NOT supported on OS X). Check with OS 8.5 (it can be found for a few dollars used), and the OS 8.6 is free from Apple. About the Sound Problem, check trashing the Sound Preferences inside the System Folder. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for the suggestggions. Cannot Restore System from CDs
Just got a new 14 G4 iBook. Also have an older 12 Dual-USB G3 iBook. On the G3, Keychain has been driving my crazy for months. All efforts to get it to run properly failed so I decided to wipe the HD clean and re-install/restore the system software. Then came the idea: why not use the CDs that came with the G4, because the OS on them was 10.3.3. If I started with the G3 restore software, I would have to start from OS 10.1.0 and work forward, using Software Update and it would take me forever. Using the G4 CDs would save me lots of downloads. Seems that was a BAD IDEA! First I backed up everything on the G3 to an external FireWire HD, using Disk Utility's Restore function. (I'm not totally brain dead, folks). Then popped in an OS X CD and started up the G3, went to Disk Utility and erased the hard drive. Then restarted, using the first of the two G4 Software Install disks which the G3 chewed on for awhile, then spit ! out. Then popped in the second one and again the G3 spit it out. So, admitting defeat, I restarted from CD 1 of the G3's original Software Restore disks. Here's where I got completely stumped: I get a window in the middle of my screen and no menu bar across the top of the desktop. Window is labeled: ASR Two boxes across the top. One says iBook HD Disk 1.dmg. Other says: Apple Software Restore completely erases the contents of your hard drive before restoring the original contents, including the original system software, etc. In the middle is an icon labeled Destination Disk and it's labeled Restore Image To the right are choices for Eject Disk and Switch Disk Hitting either Eject Disk or Switch Disk simple switches back and forth between Restore Image and iBook Restore CD. As you switch back and forth, the message below says one then the other cannot be restored. You are left with one choice, QUIT, as RESTORE, the other option, is grayed out. Any suggestions re what to try next, folks??? Many thanks, bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Any suggestions re what to try next, folks??? Many thanks, bob Bob, There should be two disks that came with your G3. One for restore and the other is the install CD. It sounds like you popped in the restore CD, when you should have put in the install CD. But, as you stated, you are not totally brain dead so you probably already did this. :) I said it once, and I'll say it again. Try using CCC. Carbon Copy Cloner is a freeware program that will allow you to make a clone of your HDD from your G4 via a firewire cable using Target Disk Mode. Don't worry about OS X not installing correctly because of different processers. OS X has built in system files that detect the hardware it's installed on during startup. This way, you can at least get everything on your G3. After that, you can remove the files/folders you don't want on your G3. Hope this helps, Z THE BLUETOOTH MASTER CCC is here: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html PLEASE NOTE: I in no way have any affiliation with Mike Bombich, creator of CCC, or in any way receive any compensation for referring people to his site/software, other than use the software that he has designed for us Mac users. I feel I have to mention this because it seems lately people have had a need for this software many times, and I'm starting to feel like I almost work for him! :) -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo booted by external Firewire drive
Alejandro, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: OS X installs everything for every Mac supported. This is not 100% correct, I think. Some delivered systems must be to some extent machine specific as we had great problems with a G5, upon which we installed a standard Panther (it came with Jaguar). After certain problems, we received G5 Panther System disks, reinstalled and our problems went away. So then, A Panther System from a G4 box, wouldn't work fully just by copying it to a G5 system, even as Panther in later incarnations (updates) may support the G5 systems fully. This was also common, with earlier G4 machines. But, in general you do have a point that systems *may* be transferable. I'd never do it like that though, as making a specific installation really doesn't take that much time. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
