Re: Superdrive took dive
I hope someone can help me. I have a just-over-one-year-old (of course) 17 G4 PowerBook with a SuperDrive. After a year of working flawlessly, reading and burning all brands of CD and DVD, yesterday I went to put in a blank CD to backup some data with Toast, and got an unhappy surprise: the disk went in fine, but then the drive clunked twice, and spat the disk out. I tried several other disks -- commercial, self-burned, DVD -- same trick every time: full pull-in insert, two big clunks and disk eject. I reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU, did the Force Quit, Force Shutdown, Control-Command-Power start -- all the Apple remedies. I'm currently trying to find my original Hardware Diagnostic disks, but if the drive won't accept any other disks, I'm justifiably concerned that it won't accept the diagnostic disks either. Apple support quoted me a replacement drive price of around $1000 (minus labor), and that' doesn't make me too happy. Any suggestions/previous experience/mantras, etc.? Any help greatly appreciated. Yes Check out ESbuy they offer the Matshita drive for $170, and then find some one like me to put it in for you if you don't want to do it your self. http://www.esbuy.com/paslsldvuj8.html Oh I am sorry that is for the 4X UJ-825 you want the slower UJ-815 which is $15 more from the same source. I just used the UJ-825 to burn a backup of this summers photos, over two gb of data to a DVD disk and checking it out it worked just fine. Bill -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... L2 cache not used with Panther???
I'm working on a PowerBook G3 Lombard, with 333MHz processor. The L2 cache is bad. I get an error at startup (running OS9) and Apple System Profiler states that it is not installed. I was going to replace the processor until someone told me that Panther, OS10.3, does not utilize the L2 cache. Frankly I find it hard to believe. I use CPU Director 1.5 to turn it on after the first start up into Panther. So the answer is yes, it runs in Panther. dan_A -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Is A Wallstreet PRAM Hack Possible??
My Wallstreet is now about 5 years old and the original battery is dead. Also I believe the PRAM or Clock battery is dead. So no 'mobility' and no correct date. (I've done all the reset business in Open Firmware etc. and no cigar.) I was thinking of replacing the PRAM battery but the least expensive New ones are around $45+ each and I'm thinking -there's got to be a cheaper fix. (I've seen the $24 and $30 ones on ebay.. but they've been pulled from working Wallstreets and how long do you think they're going to last!?) I almost never need it away from AC power and with the main battery out I'm thinking ..Hmmm.. here's an empty bay/space and that maybe some other type of 6v battery (PRAM or otherwise) would substitute (and could also be made much easier to get to). So there is the dilemma and the challenge. I'd appreciate hearing any suggestions or comments. Thanks... Bill Davis Nashville --- Also.. out of curiosity I opened the main battery pack and find that there are 12 Panasonic (CGR1760HC) Li-ion batteries soldered together.. and could be replaced for about $7.50 ea. ...IF ya wanted to go to the trouble. __ Do you Yahoo!? It appears to be the original 20GB that was shipped with this computer. This diagnostic utility might be of interest to you: It's called S.M.A.R.T and from the product description: Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T) is built into most newer hard drives. S.M.A.R.T records a number of attributes that can be reported. These are things like Seek Error Rate, Spin Up Time and more which could help warn of impending difficulties. This predictive and warning function is part of the value for products like Granite Digital's SMARTVue. S.M.A.R.T of course can't warn you of everything. A power supply could blow without warning, leaving your hard drive dead. But many failures would give plenty of warning before the drive became inaccessible, and that is what SMARTVue can monitor. Drive failure is much more rare than it used to be, but not so rare that you should assume your drive will never fail. You can download a free version of SMARTVue (and see screenshots) from http://www.granitedigital.com/smartvue/index.htm The free version is has limited functionality, but can be upgraded to the Pro version for $19.95 (or $29.95 for a version with printed manual). There is only a Mac OS X version (10.2 or later). Although it's not perfect for everything, TechTool Pro has some extensive RAM tests (something between 12-18 different tests altogether). They vary from continuous tests that take several minutes to several years as I recall. So you can wring your RAM out as long as you like. I don't have the expertise as some of the techs on the list, but like TTP for testing the ROM, PRAM and the Caches as well. HTH, Bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
