Maybe the processor daughtercard or the battery contact inside.

Does this happen when on battery or when plugged in (or both?). If
it only happens when on battery, check your battery contacts. If it
happens while plugged in, it could be a bad solder joint in your
power jack...

i had no luck with the dell version of the 350 cisco aironet (100mw).
but you can shop for aironet 4800 (identical to the 350, on ebay,
before cisco purchased them). very cheap, nice power, cisco supports
drivers for current os : )

PowerBook display getting darker?

2004-10-08 Thread Marcin Wichary
Since a couple of days ago, I have a feeling that my PowerBook G4
15 display is much darker now than it was when I originally bought it
(some 3 months ago). I don't have any measurements to confirm that, but
right now, during the night, in a moderately light room, I have to have
it at full brightness, and it still does not feel comfortable. Before,
I had it at around 80% and it felt okay.

I have two other LCD screens next to it, and I don't feel they changed,
so I'd rule out my vision as a culprit. When I put PowerBook LCD next
to them, they seem the same (actually, PB feels a tad darker), while
before I was admiring the whiteness of PB's screen as compared to the
other two.

Am I imagining things? Has anyone else encountered this before? What
should I do?

The best thing to do would be to bring it to an Apple Store if you have one
near you or to an authorized service provider. The LCD is brighten by a
light, basically, so it is possible that something is developing with the
backlight.

I was going to ask whether it's possible to prevent the titanium series

 can type in Terminal:
 sudo pmset -a lidwake 0.
I seem to remember this was possible to set in Energy Manager in the
Powerbook G3 series with Panther. But it's not there now?

I don't remember this setting but I've seen a setting that you can set in
the file 'com.apple.PowerManagement.plist' in /Library/Preferences. The
preference is called Wake On Clamshell Open and has 0 or 1 as values.
There is another setting there that isn't showed in the Energy Saver pref
pane. It's called Wake On AC Change. Finally, while we're at it, in the
Energy Saver pref pane, there is a checkbox that says Put the hard disk(s)
to sleep when possible.. I don't know what value is put by default in the
power management file because I never changed it. Instead, in the power
management file, there is a setting called Disk Sleep Timer. So, I have
set different values depending whether I'm on AC or battery.

VersionTracker says it's $15, but when you try

abandoned it and it was now available as freeware.

Reading Digest form w/o Digest Viewer is a royal

 Try it; you'll like it.

Sounds great!
Catch 22:
I'd really like to do as you suggest but in order to
download from MacUpdates or VersionTracker it has to
be available to those sites. Since the Digest Viewer
site no longer exists, it is not available to
MacUpdates or VersionTracker.
Does anybody know if it is archived anywhere or hidden
on an ftp site somewhere not linked to the defunk
site?

Anything like Digest Viewer available for OSX?
re: Digest
I'm beginning to see the light.
My thought was that it was a lot quicker to download
one file (rather than numerous files) that had already
been sorted to the G-Books emails (from all the other
fun subjects like Big...!!!), making it easier to
review the really valuable index (if people would just
use the subject line appropriately (oops, old whine),
and make it easier, quicker to sort the whee from the
shaft.
Darn it , the whole digest has become so much fun to
read that I find myself laboring thru' the sheebang to
find the choice bangs.
I just wish that it wasn't so difficult to sort,
organize, condense, follow the theme to which I
may not have have helped.
I guess this may be frustration therapy. Spilled
whine?

Funny. I've tried it both ways and I can't imagine *not* getting it as a
digest.

As the poster to whom I responded observed, trying to follow a thread when
you receive posts one email at a time can be very confusing.

While I wouldn't want to try and talk anyone out of their preferred
method, let me give you the other side of the picture.

As someone who in days gone by received anywhere from 400-600
mail-list messages a day (I've cut back on my mail-lists in the last
year or two), I have *never* used a digest mode. The biggest reason
is the time-delay between when the posts are actual made and the time
the digest reaches the subscribers. There are times when urgent help
is needed ASAP. Secondly, although I don't know how the digest mode
on this list is configured, I always found trying to locate a
specific message in a digest a pain in the neck. It's very easy to
look at all of the individual messages and select the one(s) you want
to read immediately.

I don't see where trying to follow a thread is difficult in the
non-digest mode. I assume that your email client can can sort
incoming messages by thread. If it's a I can't remember what an
early message said problem, just keep those that look interesting to
you, instead of deleting them right away. Or move all read messages
to a mailbox where you keep them for a week before deleting.

However, as the French say: Chacun a son gout.

I don't understand French, but if it roughly means whatever makes
your boat float. I agree. :-) That's what makes the world go around.
