the ambient temperature all effect the temperature of the PB. But, to
help you somewhat, my internal fan (WS II) doesn't come on until
   172-176 degrees F.

I'm still experimenting with this WS trying to get the fan to come on.
I'm running OS 9.2.2 and watching the temperature with GaugePRO v1.1.
So far, I've had the unit up to 86 degrees celcius, 187 degrees fahrenheit
and still the fan is not coming on.

I've only one reference point from Bob whos WSII fan came on between
172-176 degrees farenheit. It'd be nice if some other people chimed in
reporting the temperature that their fans come on.

While running OS 9, I got to play with the Energy Saver features.
'Allow Processor Cycling' is a great feature. But when looking
through the options in 10.3.4 I didn't notice anything that looked
like 'allow processor cycling'...

Doing a little research, I found a good explanation of how processor
cycling works..

- All PowerBook models implement a feature called processor cycling
- (formerly known as processor rest) intended to save battery life.
- This feature activates when the computer detects that the keyboard,
- mouse, trackball, or Trackpad has not been used for more then a few
- seconds. At this time, the processor speed is reduced to about
- 3 MHz and all processing functions become extremely slow. Processor
- cycling will not activate while the computer is doing any sort of
- data transfer.

When I was running 10.3.4 on this machine, it got warm and stayed warm
until the machine locked up. That is, even if I wasn't typing, using the
track pad, or transferring data to disk, cd or over the network.

But, when running OS 9 with processor cycling turned on, the machine
would start to cool down, until I started using it again. A good example
is right now. I'm typing this email up, and while thinking about what
to write, the machine drops a few degrees when I'm not typing.. Then
when I start typing again, the cpu goes up a few degrees. Which makes
sense if the description of 'processor cycling' above is correct.

Does anyone know of the status of 'processor cycling' in OS X?
Or have any urls or notes regarding it in the different releases
of OS X? (10.1, 10.2, 10.3)

Anyways.. Still testing..

for a person who has since moved to the other coast is a dangling pointer.

FireWire DVD-drive enclosures?

2004-11-06 Thread Mikael Byström

Any suggestions what brands for FireWire DVD-drive enclosures to look up?
I tried to google but mostly found harddrive enclosures only.
Are there any additional demands on a an enclosure when one fits a DVD
drive inside? I ask as I have an older enclosure that used to have a
harddrive in it, but it can also fit CD/DVD drive. Maybe I can use this
one. Unfortunately, I seem to not be able to find the the drive when I
have that in, but it could be the disk itself of course.

The only real difference between a HD case and a CD/DVD case is the hole in
the front. I usually buy my cases from OWC - check here:

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=1140Title=Hard%20Drive%2

These aren't the least expensive cases by any stretch of the imagination,
but I've never been happy with the cheaper models and/or the lack of service
other companies provided.

I just got one a few weeks ago for a DVD drive I had which is region-free. I
spotted it from eBay, checked it out, confirmed with the seller that it
could be used with a DVD drive, bided on it and won it. I think it was like
$15, with 2 FireWire ports and 1 USB 2.0 port. You just have to make sure
that they specifically say you can put a CD or DVD drive in it. Mine can be
used both for a DVD drive or hard drive. When using a hard drive, there is a
face plate that you put on, but not if you use it with a DVD drive. Of
course, the look will be better if your drive matches the color of the
enclosure. My enclosure is black while my DVD drive is beige, but that
doesn't bother me too much. I just want to watch non-Region 1 DVDs on my
PowerBook without having to switch the drive's region setting, specially
that after 5, it locks on whatever region you choose. Until someone comes
out with a region-free firmware for it, I'll use the external drive for
those DVDs. DVD Player works well with it.

Re: Safari problem.

2004-11-06 Thread Marcin Wichary
Thanks for all the suggestions, I managed to get it repaired.
The permissions did not do much, I try to repair them on weekly basis
anyway.

What I did... Initially I downloaded Safari 1.2 from Apple's site, and
then proceeded with 10.3.6 update. However, that did not change
anything.

Later I realized that there's probably a huge gap between original 1.2
and newest 1.2.4... so I installed original 1.2 again, and then
installed the 10.3.6 *Combo* update. (It's probably common knowledge,
but Combo includes all updates to 10.3, while the normal version only
from 10.3.5. The former is, quite naturally, a 3x bigger download than
the latter.) That managed to do the trick.

It's still a mystery why it happened in the first place, but at least
it's good now.

A G4 basically provides you with Altivec, which certain applications require
or will perform a lot better if you have it. However, in term of raw
performance, there isn't a lot of difference between a 500MHz G3 and a
500MHz G4, certainly not enough to justify the price of the upgrade...

dinosaur n.: 1. Any hardware requiring raised flooring and special power.
Used especially of old minis and mainframes, in contrast with newer
microprocessor-based machines. In a famous quote from the 1988 Unix EXPO,
Bill Joy compared the liquid-cooled mainframe in the massive IBM display
with a grazing dinosaur with a truck outside pumping its bodily fluids
through it. IBM was not amused. Compare big iron; see also mainframe. 2.
[IBM] A very conservative user; a zipperhead.

 Get some RAM, say 2 x 256 or 2 x 128 and install OS X?

I was planning on OS X since I am not used to 9 at all, but I am going
to turn it into a picture frame, and I have played with X on a
Wallstreet before, and it doesn't like to behave all of the time. Like
 the dim screen problem!

Might depend on the model of PowerBook, or a problem of the PowerBook
itself. I've used OS X on a Pismo for over a year without any problem with
the dim screen. I'm now using a PowerBook 17 and, again, no problem with
the dim screen. What is the dim screen problem anyway?

bozotic /boh-zoh'tik/ or /boh-zo'tik/ adj.: [from the name of a TV clown
even more losing than Ronald McDonald] Resembling or having the quality of a
bozo; that is, clownish, ludicrously wrong, unintentionally humorous.
Compare wonky, demented. Note that the noun `bozo' occurs in slang, but the
mainstream adjectival form would be `bozo-like' or (in New England)
`bozoish'.
