What you probably have to do is get a bare mechanism, and attach it to
the carrier for the existing CD. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com has
details of compatible mechanisms.

I've been looking for a similar solution for a clamshell iBook. Dan K
gave me some details on this list just the other day under the title
CDRW for clamshell iBook

I hope not! That is what I do with both a Wallstreet (300) and a
Clamshell iBook. Been that way for better than two years, and,
except for occaisional oddities (wakes up and then seems to
freeze) there seems to be no problems with either.

The only thing I'd say is to make sure you get a UPS. Computers are a

WS upgrades (was CD-RW for Wallstreet?)

2004-12-27 Thread CR
Really interesting stuff in reference to the CD-RW ?
Raised more questions.
I cannot seem to connect to PowerLogix have they folded?
If not, what is the relative difference between the PowerLogix and
Sonnet Tech ugrade boards?
Sonnet offers their 500MHz upgrades in G4 and G3 units:
Does this mean you can upgrade a G3 WS to a G4?
What would be the advantage to that?

The MCE stuff also looks interesting.
I'll have to dig a little deeper there.
As always.
Thanks.

Nope. See below.

As I thought. Therefore, aren't some security issues (don't
ask; I'm just parroting what I've heard/read) surrounding Outlook
also to be found in Entourage? Or was that just M$ bashing?
If you don't have any basis for what you state, you're only spreading FUD.

Timothy Luoma said:

While Entourage may, essentially, be Outlook for Macintosh, I don't

Outlook/Outlook Express holes.

Exactly. I see no proof that Entourage and Outlook for PC share code, nor
for Outlook on the Mac. Therefore to say that Entourage is the renamed
Outlook for Macintosh is totally false. If there are any substantiated
verifiable facts that they do share code, put then on the tabel please.

These apps should be treated as separate entities with their separate set
of problems.

I kinda like Entourage, but it's a bit slow unless you have stellar new
hardware. I really think PowerMail http://www.ctmdev.com beats them
all. I'm not sure how it plays with Exchange servers, but I don't see why
POP and SMTP wouldn't just work (barring the possibility that Exchange
only have non-standard MS-POP and MS-SMTP).
Anyway, I think PowerMail let's me see and deal with a lot of messages
(currently 150 000+ on 200+ folders), search among these at blistering
speeds and let me focus on *the messages*, not the app in question.

It doesn't have the calendar and task functionality of Entourage, but I
use Palm Desktop and Fast Track Schedule in that area and feel this works
well for me.

Re: Apple Mail

2004-12-27 Thread Andrew
Never tried it. Whenever possible I like to take a minimalist approach to
what I put on my computers. SBC Yahoo has pretty good spam filtering at the
server level, and then I use Entourage for my business accounts and Apple
Mail for my personal accounts (I like to keep them so TOTALLY separate) on
Macintosh, or Outlook 2000 (no filtering) for business and Mozilla
Thunderbird (personal - much more spam to filter) on my Windows machine.

Steps 2 and 3 may well be unnecessary on some models, but are

will only fix the problem if the backlight is off after startup; when
the backlight fails to turn on after waking from sleep, the brightness

This may very well be true if one fails to recognize the problem, yanks

on Netscape or IE icons, the remote access window opens but does not go
beyond connecting... no dial tone. So I cancel and try, try again. By
clicking the various triggers to connect (get mail, browser icon or directly
from Remote Access panel) it will eventually make a connection, usually
after 6-10 attempts. After disconnecting, as long as the computer does not
get shut down or put to sleep, re-connecting happens first click. Any ideas?
FWIW, Tech Tool says the modem is okay and this problem exists on various
phone lines.

Thanks for any ideas... this is really annoying and I fear someday I won't
be able to connect at all.

Don

Re: CD-RW for Wallstreet?

2004-12-27 Thread Dan K
Can't swap a standard slim drive into a WS CD-ROM or DVD-ROM EBM sled.
See here for more info:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/ebms.html#wallstreet

As someone mentioned, there were a few CD/RWs produced by MCE, and they
are indeed quite rare. I'll repeat my usual plea here for details, if
anyone has one and could take some pics of the inside for me I'd be able
to add that info to my EBM page. (TIA :-)

Not sure that this would fix your problem but you should upgrade to 9.2.2,
it is free and they might have fixed that problem...

fandango on core n.: [Unix/C hackers, from the Iberian dance] In C, a wild
pointer that runs out of bounds, causing a core dump, or corrupts the
malloc(3) arena in such a way as to cause mysterious failures later on, is
sometimes said to have `done a fandango on core'. On low-end personal
machines without an MMU (or Windows boxes, which have an MMU but use it
incompetently), this can corrupt the OS itself, causing massive lossage.
Other frenetic dances such as the cha-cha or the watusi, may be substituted.
See aliasing bug, precedence lossage, smash the stack, memory leak, memory
smash, overrun screw, core.
