dangling pointer n.: [common] A reference that doesn't actually lead
anywhere (in C and some other languages, a pointer that doesn't actually
point at anything valid). Usually this happens because it formerly pointed
to something that has moved or disappeared. Used as jargon in a
generalization of its techspeak meaning; for example, a local phone number
for a person who has since moved to the other coast is a dangling pointer.

USB Connector

2005-03-03 Thread invicta
Hello All,
I need a USB to Headset connector ( adaptor ) sothat I can connect my
headset to my ALPB 17 when using Scype. The headset has two
connectors, one for the headphone and one for the mic. When I connect
the headset to the laptop I insert the headphone connector in the
headphone jack and the mic connector in the audio line-in jack. The
headphone works but the mic of the headset is dead. Sound manager is
adjusted to Audio line-in port and Headphone line-in port. In a forum
of Skype I Read that I should use the adaptor described above however
phoning two computer shops drew a blank. They claim never having heard
about such an adaptor. Does it exist ?

OT..OS 10.3.8 Program help needed

2005-03-03 Thread Daniel Colwell
On Feb 23, Bruce Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Regards and thanks for your indulgence in this matter..
As for that, it's as simple as booting from the OS 9.1 CD and
installing (IF the drive was reformatted with the OS 9 drivers..if
'classic was removed' it may have simply been trashed or it may have
been nuked and OS X re-installed entirely.)
I also have a Pismo 400 running 10.3.8 and somehow in the last
re-install it ended up without classic.

Do I really need it? Since I changed over to OS X last year I have not
gone back to use 1 single app in OS 9. However, I had a problem with my
iMac and had to boot into OS9 to fix it. Is this a consideration for my
Pismo? Or can I just leave it as is?

In a somewhat (?) related topic -maintenance- I just installed
AppleJack. Any suggestions as to a schedule of use? Monthly, weekly,
only after a problem?

Once again, Thanks in advance to all the expert and helpful advice.

Re: Peripheral buying advice needed (slightly OT)

2005-03-03 Thread Luis Sequeira
 From: Luis Sequeira [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I actually have a Miglia card that sits inside my BW (upgraded to a G4
processor; this card seems to need at least a G4).
It's ok, but: can not do DivX or any version of MPEG4 compression (the
processor is not powerful enough; have to settle with M-JPEG compression)
and cannot be used with a mac except a PowerMac
(since it is a PCI card).
I have just received my QuickSilver 733MHz, if I bought a PCI card
for that, would that be enough power to encode stuff ?
I presume it has to be done in real time as the incoming feed
won't pause...
Larry
Yes, it has to be done in real time.
Yes, you can encode stuff, at least in M-JPEG (like I said, that's
what I use in my G4-upgraded BW, which has a slower processor
(550MHz vs your 733) and probably slower bus too (100MHz vs your, I
think, 133).
I use a quarter-screen resolution at full frame rate (25fps) and
about medium quality. It scales reasonably well to view full screen.
My only real complain is that audio gets out of sync after a while.
Not sure if it is because the processor isn't fast enough or a
limitation of the codec or what.

I don't think you'd be able to do MPEG-4 or DivX, though.
For comparison, I sometimes convert the recorded material to DivX
using my 1GHz TiBook and it tends to do it in about real time (I
didn't measure it accurately). I also tried to encode MPEG-4 directly
from a dv stream into the firewire port (using BTV Pro) and it failed
miserably (dropping frames left and right and slowing the machine to
a crawl), but I now think that may have to do with not having
Quicktime Pro installed.

I did not have a DivX codec at the time, so I did not try that.

appears on my desktop, but when I click on it a page of what appears to

owning this clamshell for six months and having tried this various

Off Topic - ATA133 PCI Card- INFO needed

I DO apologize for asking on this forum!
I've looked over the internet and through several forums for an answer
and found none. But reading it each day as I do I know some of you
G-Book guys are intimately familiar with several Mac models, PCI cards
and such.

I just bought a 160 gig Seagate HD... knowing the limits of my early
Quicksilver G4 (OS X 10.2.4) are something like 128(?) gigs max on
board... and, that to use the rest of the disk I need an ata133 card.

And I see ATA 133 cards on ebay (Hong Kong!) for as low as $10 +sh ...
also Sonnet and Maxtor cards for somewhat more $$.

I wonder if I can use just any old ATA 133 PCI card? Are there some
that won't work... and how can I tell which ones will? ...and where
might I find a list of either or both?

Again, my apologies for taking up space on the board.
Any help would be most appreciated! Contact me off list at;

You might be able to get more help if you were posting that kind of question
on the G-List (G3 and G4 PowerMacs) or the PCI-PowerMacs lists which are
dedicated to hardware that could use that kind of PCI cards. I'm including
my personal email address because I did put an ATA card in my BW G3. It
works fine in OS X and I can boot off the disk connected to the card without
installing any driver and my Mac can see the whole 160GB on the drive but I
just can't remember what card it is. I think it's a Sonnet but I'll check it
out later tonight and will email you directly.

Well, let's see, I have iSync, BlueTooth and Sony Ericsson.
Everything works
fine and I didn't have to shell out any cash!

is there any chance that without buying a special program I can sync my
 phone?

Pleae be more specific as to your problems. Tell us what it's not
doing rather than what it's supposed to do. Are you having difficulty
pairing the device? Does the pair drop? Things like that. . . I do
know that some Motorola phones as well as some bluetooth headsets have
had a history of bad chips for the bluetooth technology instilled in
them, which can cause some irratic behavior. Nonetheless, OS X 10.3.8
should have worked out most, if not all, of these bugs.

Hmmm, without iSync support, that might be tough. Have you checked to see if
somebody would have written an iSync conduit for Motorola phones?

fudge: 1. vt. To perform in an incomplete but marginally acceptable way,
particularly with respect to the writing of a program. I didn't feel like
going through that pain and suffering, so I fudged it -- I'll fix it later.
2. n. The resulting code.

Blue Screen of Death n.: [common] This term is closely related to the older
Black Screen of Death but much more common (many non-hackers have picked it
up). Due to the extreme fragility and bugginess of Microsoft Windows,
misbehaving applications can readily crash the OS (and the OS sometimes
crashes itself spontaneously). The Blue Screen of Death, sometimes decorated
with hex error codes, is what you get when this happens. (Commonly
abbreviated BSOD.)
