installing OS 9.1

2005-05-12 Thread dean
I've been trying to install OS 9.1 on my new to me dual USB iBook and I
keep getting a
Buss Error when I start up from the 9.1 CD. This is the full install
disk, not
system specific.
Is there a version of 9.1 that will install on the iBook?

Thanks

lombard opening case AC input repair qs

2005-05-12 Thread alienbill
After a nasty fall my Lombard seems to have something loose or broken about
the port where the ac adapter enters the laptop. More than one yo-yo
adapter were tried, each giving the same results- unit will power up only
if upward pressure is applied and kept to end of yo-yo adapter where it
enters the laptop. I am trying to disassemble to get a better idea of the
problem, but can't seem to get the case apart. Is there an online source
describing the procedure?

Is there a name for this part? Can it be replaced, or is it part of the
main board?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: font becomes invisible

2005-05-12 Thread Kristina
Hi John,

Nice of you to answer.

The font has been corrupted? Try deleting it and then reinstalling it.
That's what I thot too, and I did delete it and reinstalled it from the
ATM4.0 disk, with its whole set of fonts...
no go

Then a friend of mine from my former design studio and the studio's tech
sent me new fonts...separate from the ATM 4.0's collection...(i had them
too, but like you he thot they may have become corrupted) to I tried those.

They loaded and appeared in suitcase, where the ATM's wouldn't, but in the
Quark doc they are jaggy. In fact I noticed now that I have installed this
suitcase 9 some of my older fonts are all jaggy, like my futura family. Sigh

I like the style sheet suitcase does, and groups all the fonts and families
in one style. ...but truth is

I like things when I lived in OS 8.6 my ATM 4.0 worked life was good ... or
was life better when I used a crayon?

How did the PB make out?
I want to say that after I 'rebuilt' it , felt like building: screwdrivers
and machine guts, but I now know i just reseated the RAM CHIP..TWICE,
per your instructions and ... then it zoomed off.

...uh after I plugged in its AC and recharged its battery.

The final breakthru came when I was able to use _the right- OS 9 install
disk to make a bootable CD withDiskWarrior on it. Boy did I waste some CD's
doing this and that...if I had a garden I'd decorate my scarecrow with
useless CD's my son wants to microwave them!!!

It was discovered that making a disk image on the DT prevented the right
system files to install on the image which I was trying to make for the
PB.

The DT files never worked on the PB. I should have made the bootable CD
ON THE PB to get the right files...but the PB doesn't have a burner...any
who...I got it going...
all compliments of Bob who was, like you very patient with a blonde/redhead
graphic artist who just wants to make the deadline , make money and knit.

In the mean time my area of Indiana had a storm and the 2nd Linksys Gateway
Router from Sprint blew out and I lost internet for a day, I had to call
printer's and clients on the PHONE, had two Sprint cowboys in my bedroom on
2 separate visits...that was yesterday

...TODAY my next job in line...the fonts fail so I have to re style the
newsletter, the client is in Europe I hope she likes it, because I can't
get these dang fonts to behave...and Houston we have a deadline.

how was your day?

can you connect the Lombard directly to the DSL modem using an ethernet cable,
Yes that is what I said in short words...sorry

Depending on what OS you are running
OS9
you would need to enter the account info prescribed by your ISP
The Lombard was connected by an Orinoco wireless Card and connected via a
Linksys GAteway router, but a storm blew that modem/router out yesterday
and the sprint guys left me with only a dsl modem with an ethernet
connection and promise to overnight a new router, the Wells Fargo Wagon did
NOT arrive today...but I needed it today...of course so I am improvising
with cables...i think

The Lombard has a wireless card...and a dial up modem...

All the account info is already in there...
isn't it?
from its previous state of wifi?

I just have to change servers or something!

I tried changing the setting from the Wan/IEEE (or whatever) setting that
it was set when it was using the Card

to ethernet, but that didn't work...

TCP/IP Control Panel to get an internet connection.
yes I know this, but I don't know what the settings would be for the
powerbook and a card.

I don't know how that would allow you to access graphics stuck
 on the Lombard.

I would email the jpegs from the Lombard to the DT where I am working,
then switch the ethernet/dsl cables from the Lombard back to the DT and
receive them for the document on the DT project.

After setting the Lombard TCP/IP Control Panel, you may have to reset
the modem. Turn of the Lombard, unplug the modem. Wait a minute or so and
plug the modem back in. The restart the Lombard. If all goes well, the
modem
should get an address and when the Lombard restarts there should be an

If the two machines are Macs, and are in the same room or building, you
could connect them together with a ethernet cable (or ethernet crossover
cable, depending on the machines).

For the record, and as I have said before, (sorry for repetition) if
anybody can cool a G5 Powerbook I can. My cooler design performs over
2.5 times better than a conventional cooler of the same size.
My desktop cooler cools better than water. Non exotic, direct to air.
But Apple will not sign my NDA (it's MY invention) and tell me 'we are
already working on something else' - before they receive disclosure!
How do they know what 'something else' is if they haven't seen what I

The patent system is virtually completely ineffective at protecting

Was your installation an upgrade? If so, that is likely the problem. My
AlBook is extremely fluid in QuickTime 7 Pro.

I don't get it, everything was supposed to be better in the video
world, but now, quicktime is stumbling like crazy, slow slow slow...
Anyone else have this, and/or know what to do about it..?

Re: tiger, g4 ALbooks, and quicktime....

2005-05-12 Thread Nima
The only issue I have with QT is the fact that you have to press
forward and backward again and again instead of just holding the
button and seeing the movie move slowly. Thats kinda stupid... but
other than that I have not experienced any slowdown.
