Tiger on Lombard via TiBook ???

2005-05-20 Thread Larry le Mac
I have understood that non-Firewire Macs are excluded from
Tiger the way non-USB Macs were excluded from Panther.
I have also understood that it is the install process that is
the problem as apparently Tiger runs well on older Macs,
often faster, which sounds very good, so...
Will I get a good result if I fit my Lombard's harddrive in my
wife's TiBook (ooh er...), install Tiger and then refit it in the
Lombard ?
How much does the machine model affect the installed software ?
I recall the days of System 7 with System enablers... ;o)

I'd use an external bus powered firewire case rather than take the

Re: Taking apart an iBook G4

2005-05-20 Thread Richard Clark
Pulled mine apart a month after i bought it to put the BT inside i
had a hard time finding the parts but finally found most of them on
ebay, If i remember correctly there are 4 parts needed, the actual BT
board, the wire to connect the board, the antenna wire with antenna,
and the antenna board holder. As for pulling it apart and doing the
job wasn't very hard but i did have the manual to follow.

VIP!!!! Apple Battery Recall

2005-05-20 Thread K
Morning 'Listas
Go to CNN...An article just came up concerning iBook G4 and Powerbook G4
Batteries made by LG...According to the Consumer product Safety
Commission Apple has agreed to recall 128,00 of the batteries sold in
the US

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced
Friday that Apple Computer is recalling a rechargeable battery used in
its iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 computers, due a risk of overheating and
fires.

The commission's statement said Apple is recalling about 128,000 of the
batteries sold in the United States. It said the computer maker has
received six reports worldwide of batteries overheating due to an
internal short, including two U.S. reports. The batteries are made by LG
Chem Ltd., of South Korea.

The batteries are used in the 12-inch iBook G4, the 12-inch PowerBook G4
and the 15-inch PowerBook G4. The recalled batteries include those with
model numbers A1061, A1078 and A1079 and serial numbers that begin with
HQ441 through HQ507 or 3X446 through 3X510. The model and serial numbers
labeled on the bottom of the battery, which can be read when the battery
is removed from computers.

The agency said consumers should stop using the recalled batteries
immediately and plug the computers in with an AC adapter until a
replacement battery arrives.

Apple will arrange for a free replacement battery. The computer maker's
phone number to arrange for a replacement is (800) 275-2273, between 8
a.m. and 8 p.m. CT. The replacement batteries can also be ordered on its
Web site.

iBooks in general are more complicated than Powerbooks to disassemble.
That said, check out PBFixit.com, they may have a disassembly guide for
it.

I am sure you guys have fancier PB but my baby works great and I cant

Thanks a lot for posting this! I just e-mailed the co. That now has had

well. My iBook gets so hot I almost burn myself touching it... None of
my Power Books has been this way. My iBook was purchased in Hong Kong
though, not in the US, but who knows if it is the same battery anyway...

I don't think so. At least Data Memory Systems doesn't sell it (my
favorite RAM supplier) The 867 seems to be the last 15 PB to take
PC133 SD_RAM SO-DIMMS, and DMS lists up to 512Mb; the 867 12
powerbook, and later 15 ones take PC2100 DDR SO-DIMMS.

Tiger on Lombard via TiBook

2005-05-20 Thread Edward Jackson
Hey Andrew,

When you mentioned that you installed Tiger from the 12 G4 to the 400mhz
Lombard...did you swap hard drives or??

just curious,

Ed

I installed Tiger from my Aluminum 12 G4 and that installation works great
on the 400MHz Lombard. Of course, as in all OSX versions, DVD movies cannot
be played on the Lombard under OSX.

External enclosure, WAY too much work to open a metal PowerBook.

Re: Anyone edit video on their powerbook?

2005-05-20 Thread Adam Thayer
Heck, I did a little work on a /Lombard/ in Final Cut. Of course I had a
more powerful render machine, and simply used lo-res footage (320x240 MJPEG)
for the editing process, and reattached to the clean footage on the render
machine for the final render. I wasn't using the Xi, although the technique
will definitely be useful if you find regular performance a little lacking.

Just make sure the captured footage and the downsampled footage are of the
exact same length and everything will go smoothly. When you need to render
the final result you simply disconnect from your downsampled footage and
reconnect to the original footage and let er rip.

Editing on the Lombard with the lo-res footage was just fine, even on 320MB
of RAM. Of course I had to wait through renders for every little change in
the footage... but that was because I wasn't on a G4. Your system will run
quite nicely on 512MB, although 1GB is probably a good idea if you are going
to be running through raw footage in the editor.

I have a 867 and I will be putting in a gig of ram soon. I am just

 powerbooks?

I am sure you guys have fancier PB but my baby works great and I cant
afford to upgrade right now. Sucks how long encoding and rendering
takes tho. hopefully the ram will help that some right? I have 512
 twelve in right now.

Also I can't find a gig stick for my PB do they make them? Right now
I'm looking at two 512 sticks.
