Fire lite drive

2005-09-04 Thread victoria duggan

Hi All

Ok have a problem that seems to be boggling me, I use an external
firelite drive to back up my powerbooks, It is partitioned in three
parts one for my pismo one for my daughters pismo and one for the
family ibook. This is used once a week for back up and that is it ,
Last night i plugged it in and it did not show up on the desk. so i
went into the drive utility and it was seen as a 1.1TB firewire drive
(thats a bit big as the drive is only 60gb in total). Now it does not
show on any of the books desktops, but when i took the drive out of
the case and put it in my pismo it is seen and i can boot to any of
the drive images on the disk.
Does this mean that the case has gone south (firewire one) and if
so does anyone have any recommendations for what type of case to get
to replace it.

The drive is a 2.5 9.5 mm powerbook drive.

vicki

If you prefer an enclosure with the Oxford 911 chipset, as many folks
do, take a look at this from PCMicro Store for $28:

I would first try running Disk Warrior on the Drive to see if that
fixes things. If all the data is available when drive is moved to the
Pismo and works fine it is possible there is a case problem. Depending
on age of Firewire case it maybe under warranty. Best of luck. Will S

News coverage via Mac

2005-09-04 Thread Peter Saint James

There is an interesting article in Editor and Publisher about
how a newspaper in St. Petersburg, Florida, heavily using Macs,
covered Katrina's damage in New Orleans.

Newsroom in St. Pete was communicating with its reporters and
photogs in NOLA using iChat. A stunning pix of damage was
transmitted back to St Pete by a photog who parked in front of a
hotel, picked up a wifi signal on his powerbook, and sent the pix
over that.

Full story is here:

Re: what's a good lap top cooler and question about Memorex travel drive

2005-09-04 Thread JocBr8
Hi,
Just wondering what's a good laptop cooler.
Anybody using the Targus Notebook Chillhub? (It's a cooler and a 4-Port Hub).
The salesman at Best Buy said it was okay to use on a G4 iBook.but the
back of the package does not say that it is okay for Mac under the system
requirements section. I'm wondering if it is really Mac compatible.

Also, I bought a Memorex 512 mg USB travel drive and it keeps turning my Mac
files into PC files. The instructions that came with it says that there is no
Mac drive needed. Guess I'm just supposed to use with a PC formating and
forego Mac formating?

Any thoughts?

I think it draws power from the USB port so look at the power consumption

Why don't you use Disk Utility to re-format the drive?

Re: what's a good lap top cooler and question about Memorex travel drive

2005-09-04 Thread John Siple
I was looking at these at Office Depot. But I decided against them because I'm
a bit of an efficiency freak an I gather that what they do is blow air using
the USB port power. So I would get lower battery life running a cooler. Decided
it made more sense to just put the thing to sleep and let it cool off now and
then.

Setup a folder on the Win2k box as a network share, and then do CMD+K
from the Finder on the Mac (obviously) and type in

smb://win2kbox/

but replace 'win2kbox' with the NetBIOS name of your Win2k box.

It will ask you for your username, password, and domain (which should
already be filled in). Enter the appropriate information (as if you
were logging into the Win2k box) and then try printing again.

That *should* do it, but as always, when dealing with Windows, no
promises ;-)
