Re: router not working after Apple update

2005-10-18 Thread John Siple
You might try connecting via a wire directly to the router and
checking the settings. The DI-514 used the IP address of 192.168.0.1
and the 524 probably uses the same one. But run through the LAN
settings and see if by chance you have limited the wireless to some
specific protocol or fixed IP or something. Since you can connect
when you're directly connected to the modem it's clear that your
modem can talk to the universe so the next step is to make sure your
wireless router leg can talk to your PB. So go through all the
screens in the router setup panels.

I assume here you've done this before so you know if you have changed
the password or such. If you need to reset it there's probably a
little button on the back. I don't have the manual on this machine so
I can't look up these things so I need to work from the 514 manual.
Anyway if you have trouble get back to me and maybe we can work
through the setup screens.

I use AIM for instant messaging and use the name stolengreenery.

But there shouldn't be anything in 10.4.2 that would prevent talking
to that router via airport.

Have you tried changing the channel on the router? Twice I've had to
do that, once for my niece's iBook when she first got it, once for my
sister's iMac shortly after they got it (don't remember the sequence
with the OS upgrades there). I have NO IDEA why it worked, and other
Macs on the same networks were seeing the routers fine all along -
maybe it wasn't the channel but something that forced to reset - all
I know is I did it and it worked.

I used to use Locations but under 9.1, sometimes there would be a bad
bug which would really eat my system. I've not got back into it since.

For laptops that move between two or more sites with different address

sites on the run.

A better solution if its available is static mappings on the DHCP server -
that way there's absolutely no conflicts ever and the IP can be used with
NAT pass through if need be.

However, static mappings on SOHO routers can be spotty - some don't support
it, others support it in odd ways.

Re: Wireless for Pismo to Airport Xtreme base

2005-10-18 Thread victoria duggan

Hi
I Use a Motorola wn825G card in one of the pismos i have it gives G
speed when connecting to the Netgear router i have and is around £30.
on Ebay

It uses the airport drivers and is seen by the system as an airport
extreme card.

vicki

What kind of card is best/compatible for a Pismo (Panther) to
connect to an
Airport Xtreme base? I've heard the original airport cards for the
pismo are
expensive so I'm hoping a less expensive and faster alternative is
available

for its slot.

Thanks,

J

As far as I know there are no replacements for the Airport card
isteslf but you can use a PCMCIA wifi card and get the same results.

Check this site for the options:

http://www.powerbookwireless.net

And this site has some stuff for sale and more info:

Re: Problem with Superdrive

2005-10-18 Thread Luis Sequeira

Hi

My machine is a Titanium PB G4, 1GHz with Superdrive.

My Superdrive has developed a critical problem: it does not allow
insertion of any discs: it spins for a little and then spits the
disc out (it does not matter what lind of disc I put in: CDs, DVDs,
blank or not, Audio, whatever). For all practical purposes, my PB
is witohout a functioning optical drive.

What I've tried: restart the machine, log in as a different user,
shutdown, repair permissions. I also downgraded the firmware (I
have been using the unofficial firmware update that has given me
16x CD, 2xDVD-R and 1x-DVD-RW for 2 years, without any problem)
back to the original version.

I am glad to report that my Superdrive has been resurrected :-)
What finally did the trick was the following:

- restarted into open firmware (cmd-opt-o-f)
- typed

   eject cd
   reset-nvram
   reset-all

I don't know what exactly made it work. Could be the reset, could be
doing the eject command.

I am quite happy to have recovered my drive!
