Re: TV tuner for G4 PB

2005-12-06 Thread Luis Sequeira
I'd like to record TV on my 15 G4 PB, OS 10.3.9 and am wondering
what's the
best tuner/software etc. A friend with a PC recorded a show for me
and I
can't say I'm impressed with the quality of either the video or the
audio.

If that's the best I can do, I won't bother. Any suggestions?

Willi

I have an EvolutionTV, from Miglia (www.miglia.com). It connects to
my PB (TiBook 1GHz) via usb2 on a Cardbus Card (it *might* work in
the regular usb1.1 ports of the TiBook, but I did not try it).

It does hardware compression in MPEG2, DivX or MPEG4. It has an
analog TV tuner and also composite and s-video inputs (great for
finally digitizing those old tapes).

You can do sheduled or live recordings, timeshift live tv and more.

The video quality is outstanding and the software is constantly being
updated.

For the record, the EvolutionTV can also be driven with EyeTV
software (at a cost), though [my limited knowledge of EyeTV not
withstanding] I much prefer miglia's.

Included are plugins that let you do basic editing (like removal of
ads) and even creation of dvd's from with the EvolutionTV application.

Re: Cleaning keyboards.

2005-12-06 Thread Stuart Saunders

Anne,
I thinks it's better to use a vacuum cleaner; using the narrow
nozzle. I had a keyboard develop problems (keys not working) from
using compressed air to clean it.

Yeah, but that would require actual effort (special trip to the

Got a new Wallstreet and have some questions

2005-12-06 Thread Garry Hamblin
Greetings. I finally managed to score a good deal on a 233/cache, 14.1
Wallstreet off E-bay. It arrived a couple of days ago in better
condition than the E-bay seller advertised. Just goes to show that not
everyone is a crook I suppose.

Anyway, I have some questions.

The display hinges seem kind of 'loose' in that the display has about
an inch of free play when open. Is this a sign of the hinges getting
ready to fail?

If so, where is the best place to get them replaced/repaired?

Also this PB came with only 32M ram, which I would like to expand. I
understand that it uses SDR Sodimms the same as an early iMac.
Correct? Or can any SDR sodimm be used up to 256m? Anybody tried a
512 sodimm in one of these?

Is there a DVD module available that will work under OSX?

Thanks for your help.

Real computers

2005-12-06 Thread Stuart Saunders
There was an article about a month or so ago where the author,
reviewing several different Winders computers wrote 'And we've got
work to do, so we can't use a Mac'

Never let the truth interfere with a good story. If the truth be known;

Just now trying to debug a windows box for a friend. Had heaps of
viruses, (380 odd) including one (I think) that made the cursor jump
over all the buttons so you could not click on them. Eventually got
the viruses out, now still has spyware - and any time you click on a
search for 'spyware remover' the browser crashes

Now computer has crashed hard, looks like I need to reinstall system.

The mouse on this thing has a 'warranty will be voided if broken'
sticker over the plate that unscrews on the mouse bottom to let you
clean the rollers. So you can't clean the rollers. They expect you to
send it in for service -

thing.

Actually, you do not want the FireWire2Go card. I've got a couple of 'em
and while they generally work great they use a dongle with only one FW
port, precluding the simultaneous use of the iPod's power adapter to
power the iPod while connected. The 2-port OWC card is a much better
choice for your situation.

Backlit keyboard in Powerbook 12 hack

2005-12-06 Thread Dallas
I was wondering if it would be possible to put a backlit keyboard
from a Powerbook 15 or 17 in a 12 (867MHz). From what I
understand, they are all the same size, just that the 12 doesn't
have the ALS. If possible, the backlight could be controlled via the
keys, correct?

Thanks in advance,
Dallas

Universal Power Cord for Powerbook and Dell?

2005-12-06 Thread Lists

Realizing that some of you also live in two worlds when it comes to
computers, I wonder if someone here might have any experience with a
universal AC power adaptor which would work both with a Powerbook
(15 1.5Ghz) and an Inspiron 700m.

I need a spare power cord for the Dell and thought I could do the ol'
two-birds/one-stone thing.

Thanks

Well, they meant we got money to make, and as we get
payed by the hour, so we can't use a Mac.

Surely Windows is better in most situations than DOS,
but the comment you quote reminds me of something I
ran into years ago working in the commercial Nuclear
industry. I had some spreadsheet work to do and the
tool available in the office was Lotus 123. After
struggling along for hours I told my boss I'd be done
in minutes if I could use my Mac (at that time a Mac
Plus). The IT folks were worried that I'd create a
data island if I used Excel on the Mac. The short
of it was that I brought my Mac to work, did the
job(s) in short order and saved the spreadsheets as
wk1 files (a Lotus 123 format for you young
whipper-snappers ;-) ).

No, I didn't win any converts that I know of, but
using my real computer saved a lot of time and
certainly aggravation on my part - and the IT guys
learned something new too.

Lombard Battery

2005-12-06 Thread Caleb Cupples

Hi,

I just got my new Lombard 400 in, and the battery is completely dead. I
left the thing plugged in for about 2 1/2 hours while I was at my band
concert, and there was no change from the battery. It's still at 0%
charge, according to OS X. Is there any way to make this thing work? My
only other 'Book is a 190 with a NiMH battery, so I didn't have to worry
about it, which is why I'm asking about the Lombard's Lithium Ion battery.

Thanks in advance,
Caleb
