Re: iBook as Desktop

2006-02-15 Thread Concetta Z

Is anybody here happy with using their iBooks or small screen
PowerBooks as desktop machines? Do you hook up an extra keyboard
and mouse? Happy with the small screen? Or do you hook up a
larger monitor? Elevate the laptop on a stand?

I used to use an eMac and an iBook and keep them synchronized.

Hey, that's my setup.
I'm having a little problem synching the two. How did you do it?
I would like a fast, easy, cheap way to sync my iBook to my eMac.
Just update the files that have been added or changed
(documents, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, bookmarks spring to mind).
I don't want to do a complete backup (I have that on an external HD).
Also, does it matter that my iBook is 10.4.2, and eMac is 10.3.9?
(I'm waiting to hear more about 10.4.3/10.4.4/10.4.5 for my iBook, and
when I have an extra $100 I'll upgrade the eMac to Tiger)

Thanks for any input.
Concetta

Subject: Pismo Power Jack

I'm about to dig into my Pismo to resolder the power jack to the

Something that might prevent this problem in the future (or for
others) is to give the adapter connector a quick shot of WD40 or the
like. Pismos are notorious for tight adapter connections, and this
solved it on my second Pismo. First Pismo was solved when I tripped
over the adapter cord and launched it (Pismo) into space - landing on
a concrete floor. Only damage was the adapter connector was now much
easier to insert!

To prevent unintended 'launches', you can run wires (charger,
ethernet, etc) from laptop, then around the leg of table it's on (2
or 3 times is better) or other solid object before crossing floor
etc. Then if you trip, worst can happen is you rip the wires out of
the wall or adapter. Much better than dropping laptop.

To be as succinct as I can...
Put a fresh copy of OS X(10.3) on an external 60g drive via my
Pismo. Put the 60g drive into a Lombard. Lombard will not recognize
the drive (I get either the flashing/alternating ?folder or a O with

boot disc (either get the folder w/? or boots back to the install
cd?.

Anyone know how to force boot to the main drive or what may cause this?

Checked memory and processor in another machine (Lombard).

TIA...

Henry

Can you boot off of the CD then re-install or repair permissions ?

Have access to the new style power supplies, and believe there was an

Re: Pismo Power Jack

2006-02-15 Thread themacuser
The 12" PowerBook has a 45W supply. The iBook 12" does as well, and
the 14" one (I think, I only have a 12" PB).
The 65W adaptors work fine on the 45W machine - they both supply 24
volts, and should be just the same.

Laurent is correct on this one. The G4 PowerBooks use a 65W power
supply, compared to the 45W supply of the G3 series. The voltage is
the same 24V, though. I'd advise keeping on with the YoYo, but that's

The early G4s were 45W, as are all the iBooks AFAIK.

OK, there is what I posted to the Google groups. That should clear up
everything:

OK, here are some clarifications from what I did experience. There seems to
be some confusion on the Google website about how to subscribe to groups and
manage your subscription from a non-Google email account.

For those that are subscribed from their Gmail account, please ignore this.

For all the others, here is what I did again.

You first need to send an email from the account you want to subscribe to
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'. You'll receive a confirmation email
and you just have to reply to it.

Then, go to . From that page, click the "Join"
link next to "New users". On the next page, enter your current email
address, the one you just subscribed. Choose a password and customize your
profile if you want. Then, click the "I accept. Create my account." button
at the bottom of the page. You will get another confirmation for your
account creation. You can again reply to that confirmation or click the
hyperlink in it. When creating an account for my Fannie Mae email address, I
did click the hyperlink.

Then, open a new browser tab or window or enter the Google Groups link
. From that page, now click the "Sign in" link
next to "Members".

When I want to sign in with my
Gmail account, I just enter my user ID without the domain, e.g.
'laurent.daudelin' (my Google email address is
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]').

If I want to manage my Fannie Mae email address account, I first sign out if
I'm signed in then I enter my full Fannie Mae email address in the email
field, e.g. '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', along with my password. That's
working perfectly so far. Using Safari, if I type enough characters to
identify my Gmail account, it sets the password for that account
automatically. Very handy.

Once you signed in, you should see the "G-Books" group under "All my groups"
since you already subscribed to that group with your email address. Click
the "G-Books" link. Then, if you want to change your subscription (switch to
digest, email, etc.), click the "Unsubscribe or change membership" link next
to "Start a new topic". The next page should be pretty obvious. Save your
settings and you're set.

G-Books Google List

2006-02-15 Thread P. Turtle-Bear Guillermo
Hello everyone. Twice, I have received personal email (blasted to
individuals signed up for the google group I think) about issues with
the google groups list.

List nannies - get your act together - some people seem to be having
trouble signing up and once signed up they have no clue as to how to
unsubscribe.

I had to figure it out myself, since we are given very little
instruction.

I wanted to use the same email as on the maclaunch server so I used
the email signup option (send an email to: g-books-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). That worked fine, except that when I
went to the google group page:

http://groups.google.com/group/g-books
I was told I was not a member. So, I scratched my head and sent a
message about this to the list (maclaunch), but got no useful response.

The light bulb went off and I realized that I had to "sign in" online
to get into the google group (even though I was already
"subscribed!!!" - got the confirmation email), so I created an
account (duh!). All is well now.

BUT I would like that people not cull our individual email
addresses for their own uses!!!

This might be in error as I got the same message after I confirmed.

If you want to stop receiving the digest, you'll have to unsubscribe from
MacLaunch, but I would not recommend doing it right now as the list on
MacLaunch has not been decommissioned and most users are still on that list.

Re: iBook as Desktop

2006-02-15 Thread John Slavin
I you're happy with computer power and speed, I'd buy a nice monitor
and an external keyboard and mouse. Then when you later upgrade,
you'll be good to go with a nice monitor, or perhaps a monitor for
spanning.

Al,

I saved up my pennies and bought the same iBook you have last
October. I have a gigE dual 450 G4 that used to be my main
machine, but now this iBook is it. The G4 is still in the same
place on my desk but is now acting as a server for the most part.
I love the portability of this iBook, I use it everywhere in the
house, I even put it on the book holder of my exercise bike and do
a little web surfing while riding the bike. I also find it nice to
have while waiting for my kids at the different lessons I take
them to all week. I love this iBook, it has replaced my desktop
100%. I do like having everything I do on this iBook, I think that
is part of the draw, it would be hard to have some things on this
and some things on a desktop. I guess it all comes down to
personal preference and how you work.

Now, you did say you could buy a new iMac and set it up, I have to
admit, if I had the cash on hand I might buy a new iMac and
replace the old beige G3 we have in our kitchen. :)

take care,
Kevin Avery

I use my G4 iBook as my main computer. I'm a heavy user often on my
'book 10+ hrs a day, but my son brought his new G5 iMac home over
winter break. There's no comparison. The iMac is awesome. If I
had to choose one it would be the iMac. The screen, the speed.
You'll be much more productive on it.

Tried using OS X install disc then switching to different boot disc

Anyone know how to force boot to the main drive or what may cause this?

Checked memory and processor in another machine (Lombard).
