Airport Extreme - Just checking
I am thinking of moving from Airport to Airport Extreme. I have: TiBook 500 iMac G3 400 Graphite SE (and dead Airport Base Station) I thought I had remembered some advice here that some older Macs like mine may not support the Extreme cards. What kind of procedure is there to keep OSX and the G4 iBook running smoothly and quickly? Depends on what you mean by optimize and quick; generally the term optimize is used to refer to the fragmented condition that hard drives get in requiring defragmentation. Others may use this tern for different conditions, but defragging is the usual reference. For this operation there is Norton DiskDoctor/SpeedDisk, TechTool and Disk Warrior (first that come to mind). Apart from these, repairing permissions should be considered a regular maintenance task. Disk Utility, included with OS X can repair permissions. There are also some shareware items that do these tasks as well as log rotation and other UNIX tasks through friendly UIs. Onyx, MacJanitor and Cocktail are several available now. HTH. I am sure others of the erstwhile list membership will have other suggestions. Bob -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... So when you open the new version it is reading the old message store. IIRC, the Microsoft User Data folder contains a file simply called Database along with prefs and caches, sigs, etc. If you create a new identity all of these default files (except the Newsgroup Cache which is shared), are created as empty containers awaiting storage. You might try the new identity to verify that all of the functionality is correct and then move the default 5 or 6 files into the new identity folder. You should study this structure first and use backup files. This article shows about identities and creating them: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;280525 In the end, OE may not read the database, but it's worth a shot. Re: Updating LInksys Firmware
Anyone out there with a similar Linksys that can offer a little guidance, please? Bob: Versiontracker gives this link: http://www.mactechnologies.com/pages/tftpinst.html#linksys I updated mine from my Mac. Went well, but it later started dropping Earthlink connections. When I tested using the modem connection only to the Airport base station, the connection problem went away. That has been about two weeks. I am going to put the router back online over the holiday weekend and, if it still acts flakey, I am going to reset the router. Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.
