Re: Top-Bottom Posting Clarification

2006-02-03 Thread Brian L. Matthews

If you can modify your signature, you can also add 2 '-' characters at the
beginning of a line, just above your name and signature.

The standard is -- (dash dash space) on a line by itself. See RFC
3676 for instance.

Re: road warrior?

2005-09-09 Thread Brian L. Matthews
Have any of you ever used a cellphone with a Pismo (or any other
Powerbook) to go online out in the wilds whether there's no
wireless, phone jack or LAN point? If so, please let me know how
it's done. What phones, software and connections between the two did
you use?

I've done it with my Samsung i500 on Sprint. The i500 isn't
Bluetooth, so I have to use a sync cable, but once I plug it in, Mac
OS X treats it as a modem (no need to install any extra software), so
I just enter one of my ISP's dialin numbers, tell it to connect, and
I'm online.

Re: Can OS 9 be installed?

2004-06-28 Thread Brian L. Matthews
And, yes Classic (OS 9) is an emulator under OS X, just like Virtual PC.
No, it's not. Virtual PC has to emulate the processor, Classic
doesn't (for a PowerPC application, for a 68k application it does,
but the same thing happens when booted into OS 9).

Re: When do you shut down your laptop?

2003-10-09 Thread Brian L. Matthews
Do I need to shut down before taking the powerbook to work, (car
commute) or is it good enough to sleep and spin down the hard drive?
The only time I shut mine down is if I'm not going to be using it for
a few days (which doesn't happen very often :-)). Otherwise I just
put it to sleep, put it in my shoulder bag, and go.

Re: Reviving Pismo Battery?

2003-01-23 Thread Brian L. Matthews
that is, you can usually drain and recharge a LiIon battery about 500
times. For most people, this is a 2-3 year life span.
The thing that never been clear to me about that 500 cycles is what count
for a cycle. Is it every time the battery is recharged, or a combination or
what?

I've wondered the same thing. If I run for 5 minutes on battery and
then plug back in, is that a cycle?

Re: Pismo Ram

2003-01-22 Thread Brian L. Matthews
According to Apple syst. profiler: SoDimm 0/J2 SDRAM 64mb
  SoDimm 1/J2 SDRAM 256mb
Which one is in the upper slot? 64mb module?

I'm pretty sure SODIMM0/J2 is the bottom slot. When I added my 512MB
module I put it in the bottom slot and Apple System Profiler shows
SODIMM0/J2 as 512MB. So I'd guess your 64MB modules is in under the
processor card.

Re: Pismo?

2002-09-06 Thread Brian L. Matthews

Nope. My Pismo is 2+ years old. It doesn't look new, but it doesn't
have any significant scratches or cosmetic damage.

Mine either, I've had it 2-1/3 years, and it gets taken out of my
laptop bag and put back in maybe 1.75 times per day on average. The
only thing wrong with it is that two of the feet are missing and a
third one's going.

Re: Pismo battery

You may want to try Apple's battery reset utility. It did the trick for
my Wallstreet battery.

Battery Reset doesn't work with Pismo's batteries.

Re: OS X 10.2

2002-08-13 Thread Brian L. Matthews

Anyone know whether 10.2 will come with 9.2.2 included?
No it will not. All the Mac sites are reporting it today.

I can't find anything on Macintouch, MacFixit, MacMinute, or
MacSlash, so all seems an overstatement, how about a link to just one?

I'm running 9.0.4 and was going to switch to Mac OS X with 10.2, but
if I have to buy both 10.2 and 9.2.2, Apple has pretty much
guaranteed I won't be upgrading.

What's all the fuss? If you have 9.04 you can upgrade up to 9.2.2 for free
just follow the links. here they are on a silver platter just for you :-)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75103 9.04 - 9.1

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=751869.2.1 - 9.2.2

Ok, for some reason I thought 9.2.x was a paid upgrade, thanks for
pointing me to the updates!

Re: Pismo G4 upgrade

2002-06-24 Thread Brian L. Matthews

That release reads rather strangely. It's confusing, one paragraph
seems to say that you send the card in, another makes it sound like the
whole 'book. Relevant paragraphs are below:

The BlueChip Pismo requires that the the original processor card have
  its G3
processor removed, and replaced with the G4-7410. This is due to the
proprietary nature of the Pismo processor card.

Customers who wish to have their laptop upgraded with the BlueChip
  Pismo send
the laptop to PowerLogix. The original processor card is verified and
  tested
prior to the chip swap, and retested prior to shipment back to the
  customer.
Turnaround time is guaranteed to be five business days or less for
  domestic
   customers.

Actually the first paragraph doesn't say anything about sending in
the processor card, it's just saying it has to be removed, which
PowerLogix does when you send in the whole computer, per the second
paragraph.
