First-gen 12 PB G4 867MHz with 1GB RAM?

2004-04-09 Thread Brian Lalor
According to this article[1], these[2] 1G SODIMMs will work in the
original 12 867MHz PowerBook G4 (like the one I bought in August,
just before the new ones came out). Has anyone tried it? They're
still too expensive for me to buy; mine works pretty well maxxed out
(officially, anyway) at 640MB, but after bumping my G5 at work to
1.5GB, I've become a memory hound. :-)

Re: Is an external Hard Drive a good solution?

2003-12-19 Thread Brian Lalor
On Dec 18, 2003, at 10:26 PM, Les Riess wrote:

I am
thinking about getting a portable external firewire drive, 40, 60, or
80
GB, mainly for backing up my important files and also for moving data
between the 2 computers.
I'm about two keystrokes away from pulling the trigger and buying an
OWC Neptune 120GB external drive. Its under $160 (barely) and looks to
be a good no-frills drive. My PowerBook has a 40GB drive which I've
just about filled to capacity, mainly with my MP3 collection (and I
ain't done rippin' yet!). I looked into upgrading the hard drive in my
PB to an 80 gig Toshiba (?) drive that matches the specs of the OEM one
in terms of size and RPM, but that's an expensive proposition. ~$280
for the drive, another $90 for a portable (bus-powered) enclosure (for
the old drive), and then I'm figuring another $100 to have Apple do the
upgrade, since I've got Apple Care on this 'book and don't want to void
the warranty. So that's close to $500 to double my storage capacity.
I *will* do it, but not right now.

The smaller, portable bus-powered enclosures and the 2.5 drives
typically used with them are more expensive than their larger
wall-wart-powered brethren, and that's what's motivating me now.

In answer to your question, yes, I think they are a good idea. More
storage is always a Good Thing(tm), as are backups (and I'm sorely
lacking on both fronts).

Hope that helps...

12 PB G4 HD u/g

2003-10-19 Thread Brian Lalor
Hrm, sorry, got carried away with the acronyms. :-)

I've got an 867MHz 12 PowerBook G4 that I bought from the Apple Store
with a 40G hard drive. I'm down to about 2G free (most of it is taken
up with MP3s...) and I'd like to upgrade it to something bigger. I see
on xlr8yourmac.com that Toshiba makes an 80G drive that should fit.
The problem I've got is that I bought AppleCare on this computer and I
don't want to void my warranty so soon. :-)

Does anyone know if the Apple Store would put the new drive in my PB
for me (for a fee, I'm sure), or am I SOL unless I want to do it myself?

Thanks,
B

sound issue on 12 G4

2003-09-28 Thread Brian Lalor
Morning, all. I've had my 12 G4 PB for about a month, now. I'm very
happy with it, even though my battery life has become questionable with
the 10.2.8 update...

I've noticed that, when running on battery, it seems the sound
subsystem gets turned off, but wakes up when a sound event gets played.
For example, just now, after not having any sounds played for a while,
I went to iTerm and hit ^G to cause an alert to trigger. I heard a bit
of disk activity, a slight pop from the speakers, and finally the alert
sound. It took about 2-3 seconds for the alert to finally sound. If I
trigger another alert soon after, it'll play again with no delay. If I
wait a minute or two, the delay will happen again.

Is this an energy-saving feature? It doesn't seem to happen when
running off the AC adapter...

Thanks,
B

Battery drain while asleep

2003-09-19 Thread Brian Lalor
Good morning, all. What's considered normal battery drain for a 12 PB
G4 while asleep (suspended)? Between about 9pm yesterday and 5:30am
today I lost about 10% of my charge, according to X-Charge.

Thanks,
B

Sounds like you're doing better than me. You lost 13% in 16 hours, I
lost 10% in 8. :-) I've also got 640MB, BT active, but AirPort off.

Anyone have a battery status logger they like? X-Charge is ok, but
doesn't remember its data plot between instances...
