Bounce messages
I need to know what the deal is here. I'm getting bounce messages numbering in the dozens every day, and it's getting old. If you'll look at my email, you'll notive I'm on AOL, so every message i write on a LEM list has to be done through AOL's webmail system, since AOL won't support an older, text only format which the LEM lists use. Tis webmail is considerably slower than AOL itself is, so it takes a ecent amount of time to replyh to all of the bounce messages. so what's the deal here? When will this problem be resolved? I know bouncing messages is a somewhat common thing with this mailing list, but seriously, last week I got over 30 bounce messages in oneday. New iBooks
I don't know about those on here, but as usual, there have been people wanting speculation on any new line of iBooks coming out on the Apple boards. Of course Apple won't have any specualtion or rumors going around. In any event, I thought I'd toot my own horn. I claimed a few months ago that there would be new iBooks at the end of october or beginning of november with a minor speed bump and maybe one or two added features. Sure enough, this morning Apple announced new iBooks, just as I expected. Changes are as follows: 14 1.33 GHz vs old 1.2 GHz 14 1.33 GHz vs old 1.0 GHz 12 1.2 GHz vs old 1.0 GHz the top line model has a standard superdrive now, and all models now have built in Airport Extreme as standard. Just FYI in case some didn't knwo this already. Brian -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: iBook going back to Apple
No personal experience here, but I've read that all the G3 iBooks (white) had this problem, except the 500 mHz model. Apple claims to have this problem licked with the g4 iBook though, AFAIK. Personally, I've only owned it for a few months, but I really really really ike my iBook G4. I feel it's a much better value compared to the Powerbooks. Brian Well, I guess I've been lucky up till now, but it looks like my 700 icebook has finally developed the infamous video failure. I bought it used almost a year ago, and other than being on it's second hard drive since right before I got it, I haven't had any other issues. From what I've been reading on the Apple discussion forums, it seems that once the board is replaced it's usually not long before it goes bad again. Seems to be that it has a design flaw in that these things just run way too hot. I think once it's fixed, it's going to eBay, and I'll be looking for a replacement. But not another white iBook! What would folks recommend that would cost under a grand, but with comparable speed and capability? I was thinking of a Tibook, but I use Airport and I've heard so much about the poor reception with the Ti's. Wish I could afford a new 17 er! I was tempted to suggest a Titanium, but since you're concerned about AirPort reception, then it might not be a good idea. Then, if you exclude the white iBook, there isn't much left except maybe a Pismo (PowerBook FireWire), but it will be a tad slower than your iBook and it might also have less video memory. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: G 5 Powerbooks.
Apple is having a difficult time making a portable version of the G5. right now it requires too much power and produces too much heat to work in a laptop. Also, there are size considerations. The processor right now is too large (physically) to fit in a case as compact as the ones that apple laptops come in. They are working on this, but it's taking much longer than originally expected. In the meantime, there is a new dual core processor that's now available, which gives the benefits you would normally see in a dula processor computer, and it's designed for laptop use. It's more likely we'll see this processor on the next line of powerbooks than the G5. Brian Any news when 5 G powerbooks will be introduced now that the 5 G iMacs are running ? Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
VPC is a nice add on for the mac, but definately not wirht the full retail price. BUt then again, what DOES MS sell that's worth their retail price? OBviously there are some very knowledgeable people on this topic here- anyone know of a way to tweak VPC so I can run this game? Keep in mind, this is an older game dating back to the days of the 333 mHz machines on the PC side, so we're not talking about intensive processing to run it. DOn't mean to be pushy, just would really like this option if theres a way. If not, I'll just have to settle for the basic windows functionality. I moved them with no luck. even copied everything from the one user's preference folder to the other preference folder. Every time I load VPC, even if i try to open the PC in question directly, I get sent to the PC setup assistant. there seems to be an option to use an existing PC in there, but it wants me to provide the HD file, which I can't find. I keep my scripts on a completely different hard drive (using my desktop), though any shared folder would be fine. Just double click on the actual PC (VPC document) to launch it. I have the Applescript menu on my menubar and put an alias to each PC in the scripts folder. Much like the old Apple menu in classic Mac OS, I use the script menu as a launcher. You can also put your PCs on the dock and launch them that way, though you will have to set it up for each user. Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
Sorry if I missed previous detail, but what's the problem? Won't run is fairly vague. It won't install? It unexpectedly quits? I've run a few games (not SFC) on VPC. Graphics requirements and Copy-protection schemes on install CDs tend to be the biggest bugaboos. I search periodically for info on this topis, but no one's (yet?) put anything substantive on a site. The game installed just fine, no issues on that front. First problem to poke it's head out was a message saying that directX 7.something or another wasn't compatible with my version of windows. I got around this by installing a newer version of directX (8.0a). After it was installed I loaded the game, it asked me if I wanted to register, and after that the program just seemed to disapear from the screen. No error message. This is a similar issue to when I was using an old 333mHz machine without a vid card. Once I got a vid card it ran perfectly, even though the game is technically supposed to run without a vid card installed. I therefore assume it's a vid card issue, but am not completely sure. Re: Anyone here use virtual PC?
Thanks, that did the trick- I'm now running Win 2K pro on my ibook, and it seems to be running great. One thing though, I wouldn't really call it a problem, since I'm sure that VPC wasn't designed with this in mind, but I'd like to know what I can do jsut the same: I'd like to run an older game, five years old to be exact, and the VPC software doesn't seem to be recognizing my vid card as a 3D card. I'm quite aware that VPC wasn't intedned as a gaming platform, but I had hoped to also use it to run my very old copy of Starfleet Command. I'm not certain this is the issue, but this IS how it acted when I was on my old PC that had no vid card. Brian I recently solved this problem by finding a floppy image for Win98 which allowed me to install Win95 too. You have to mount the floppy image first, then make sure the CD is captured, then restart. It took some doing but I did get it to work. NOTE: after installation, be sure to enable undo drives. Excellent feature. Also, I am doing to save copies of the VPC6 files to DVD so that I won't have to start all over again if/when something goes really wrong. Wireless printing
A few days back I posted about my troubles getting my printer to work on my new wireless network, thanks in part to the advice I received on here. I managed to make it work, but not in the way I had originally planned to. After screwing with it and getting no where I decided to try it from another angle. I plugged it in to my G3 iMac and set it up to be shared from there. Worked like a charm. I think I may know now what I was doing wrong and may be able to get it to work on the base station, but for now I'll stick with the working setup I have. AIrport Extreme Printing.
I tried to get some help in the apple forums, but have had no luck so far. This week I got an Airport extreme base station to go along with my iBook G4. Setting up a network was pretty easy- I have my iMac G3 wired in, and the iBook connects wirelessly with an airport extreme card. The built in modem is great, lets me connect to my ISP via 56k, which is my only option right now, wirelessly. The network works great, except for the printer I have plugged into the base station. I have a HP PSC 750 plugged into the base station USB port. The software for it is loaded on both the iBook and the iMac, and both computers see the printer in the network via the rendevous selection, but I can not access it with either computer in any way shape or form. The one lead I have is that when trying to access the printer via rendevous it says the drivers are not loaded. Can anyone help? TIA, Brian -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... As ffar as I can tell, the powerbooks still come with cardbus slots, so most wireless cards will do the trick. 806.11g is the better and quicker of the two, of course, and airport extreme card might be compatible as well for $79, and it would be installed inside that computer. More advanced options?
First, the stats, so I don't forget later: iBook G4 1.2 GHz 768mb RAM OS X 10.3.4 Prior to buying this little wonder I was informed that it was possible to work around some of the built in limitations that seperate the iBook from the powerbook line. Obviously, I'm thinking on a software level, not hardware. In particular, I was wondering about the display capabilities: Going beyond 1024x768 would be very nice, and also the ability to use monitor spanning, not just mirroing. The reason I ask is because several months back I was told there are hack that will let me pull these two things off. My new iBook G4!!
Hi to all, i'm writing this on my brand spanking new handy dandy high speed low drag iBook G4, 14 screen, 768 megs RAM, OS X 10.3.4. This is the first actually new Mac I've ever had, and I words cannot express how thrilled I am to be running it and not have to rely on my Compaq presario PC which I've learned to despise. Besides a quick hello, I actuallywanted to post some questions about a topic I've never really put much thought to. i've always been tied to desktop computers, and as such have never noticed how clumsy and awkward chords are on a laptop like this one. As such, i'm thinking of taking advantage of the built in Airport Extreme card, and hooking it together with my older computers. I've already asked other questions concerning this on other lists, so I'll keep this concise and different from the other questions I've already posed elsewhere: How much gear will I need to buy? Will an airport extreme base station do the trick for networking, or will I need to buy some more hardware and software as well? Keep inmind, i had hoped to put PCs and macs on this wireless network. Next, The school i go to has a couple wireless hotspots, but is PC oriented. What are the odds that I will be able to interface using these hotspots and my iBook? Re: My new iBook G4!!
The AirPort Extreme Base Station should be able to network both wireless and wired computers. If you have more than one Ethernet wired computer, you will need an Ethernet hub or, better, a switch. As for the school, you should be able to use those hotspots without any problem. There are even applications that will scan for available network (like KisMAC). -Laurent. -- There's also an automatic search feature for hotspots in your neighborhood on the homepage of cnet.com. Also, check out www.wififreespot.com for a comprehensive list of free wifi hotspots in your area. Zoltan Wow, sounds like this should be an easier problem than I expected. If that turns out to be the case, this should prove to be a completely different experience than the last time a Mac was my main computer. Re: My new iBook G4!!
I like the way you think. While this IS a PC oriented campus, and I HAVE had troubles with profs who requires PC only files there, there is at least one mac lab there, and there is at least one IT person there that knows macs. The one guy I know personally should at the very least be able to point me in the right direction to clear up any problems, so long as my iBook is compatible with their network. From what everyone is telling me, however, I'm thinking it shouldn't be much of a problem. The Printers in question are both HP printers, each of them installed on at least one mac, but I would definately like to consolidate the several computers printing needs to one printer. Ibook Covers??
I've read about cutom covers for powerbooks before, some sort of form fitting rubber or latex or something that fits the form of the entire laptop and protects it from scratches and abraisions, and other damage that can be incurred. Does anyone know of such a thing for my G4 14 iBook? TIA, Brian -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
