Yes, I did that. I think I've found the problem. I have another 60g
drive I use as a FW External backup for my Pismo. That drive will boot
in the Lombard. I believe the problem is a bad Toshiba HDD. I'm going

Let me restate that: I can reinstall and run repair disc. When I run

Lombard Startup

2006-02-15 Thread G Henry Taylor

To be as succinct as I can...
Put a fresh copy of OS X(10.3) on an external 60g drive via my Pismo.
Put the 60g drive into a Lombard. Lombard will not recognize the drive
(I get either the flashing/alternating ?folder or a O with \ inside.
Tried using OS X install disc then switching to different boot disc
(either get the folder w/? or boots back to the install cd?.

Anyone know how to force boot to the main drive or what may cause this?

Checked memory and processor in another machine (Lombard).

TIA...

Re: iBook Logic Board extended repair program x2?

I have a G3 700 iBook that has been in twice for logic board
replacement. Both times were no hassle. First time shipped from
workplace to repair center. Second (just last month) was from AASC.
First time it was diagnosed over the phone, second time by service tech

Good luck,

Just curious if any of you have had to send an iBook G3 in more than
once for video issues covered by the Logic Board Extended Repair

We sent one in several months ago and it worked well until recently,
but

now it's exhibiting the same garbled video and blank screen on startup
issues as before the repair.

Apple's been very cooperative and will be picking it up for
diagnosis.

Have any of you had the "good fortune" of having your iBook repaired
more than once for this issue? Do you know exactly what it is they
diagnose/repair with this?

Like I said, just curious ...

2 beeps: EDO memory is installed. The PowerBook (FireWire) ships

Re: Getting a firewire drive

Not to disparage MacMall, and although I've never used them, I have
read some bad things about their service on other forums. I believe
there is a web site devoted to spreading that knowledge and belief.
Just a word of caution, although I'm sure you'll hear good reviews of
their website.

Henry

Ok, that USB drive isn't ever going to work properly with my PB so I'm
going to have to get another drive.

I've been looking at the 120 gig Fantom drive that MacMall has on
sale--anyone have any thoughts on it that I should know before I order
it? (I do want to use it as backup and then hopefully be able to boot
from it if necessary)

Thanks!

Re: Burning DVD's on a Pismo

2005-09-16 Thread Henry Taylor
Actually, I've burned DVD from my Lombard using an external burner
(Sony DVD RE DW-U18A - Firewire) and Toast Titanium 6. Lombard is a
400 with no upgrade. As for the upgrade, nice to have (I want one
too) but not necessary for your project, IMHO.

Henry

I have a Pismo 400MHz, 768 RAM, 40G running 10.3.9.

Obviously the first thing I need is the DVD burner. Probably will go
with the internal. But I was wondering if I had enough horsepower to
accomplish this. Anybody out there burning DVDs on a Pismo? What
upgrades would help the most? G3 900 or G4 500? More RAM? Faster
hard drive speed?

I am happy with my Pismo, and will probably wait for the equivalent
of a G5 laptop before I replace it. Or maybe not if I have to put so
much $ into this to make editing and burning DVDs practical

WegenerMedia has a pretty tempting offer on the G4 500 upgrade.

My main projects will be converting VCR tapes over to DVD and
editing them with chapters and possible background music. We have a
bunch of tapes and photos that I want to get on DVDs to look nice,
share and preserve. I'd like to use my current laptop but I want to
see what is possible before I spend too much.

Please let me know of your experiences.

Thanks!

Dan-

HD Swap

2005-09-15 Thread Henry Taylor
I have a Lombard 400 with a 30 g HD. I've just purchased a Pismo with
a 10 g HD. Can I just swap the HD out or will there be a conflict
with the machines. Both will have OS X 10.3.9.

Thanks,

My next stop will be the Logic board, though I replaced it a few

 Any ideas or comments?

That sounds a bit like a processor failure, whether the processor
daughterboard is not firmly in place, although you mention that all modules
are plugged in snugly, or the processor has failed altogether. I would
probably try to find another Lombard processor daughterboard before
replacing the main logicboard.

Re: Dead screen on dual USB iBook

2005-09-13 Thread Henry Taylor
One might also mention that the Dual USB iBooks have a history of
this. If I remember correctly, it stems from the hinge eating away at
the wires that run through it. Unfortunately, I don't remember if
Apple covers this as they do the iBook logic board problems. You
might call Apple and see if covered, or email them (free).

Good luck,

Can anybody shed any further light on diagnostics or direct me to
other resources? I'm game to replace the screen, but would like to
make sure that's the problem before proceeding.

Could be the LCD screen, the inverter board or simply the ribbon cable that
hooks the screen to the motherboard.

It it was me, I would open the laptop and visually inspect the ribbon cable
that goes to the screen. If I could find one cheap, I would probably buy one
just to try it.

If the problem still persists, I would try to find a screen and would just
replace the whole thing. I'm not sure how you can test the inverter and I'm
not sure I would want to try to replace it.

Did you check the processor daughtercard? Sometimes, the card will become
unseated due to heat and other factors like vibrations and the symptoms are
pretty much what you describe. I would pull it out completely and put it
back. Check where the connectors on the card are so that you can apply all
your pressure there. Even though these are very fragile components, it is
surprising the amount of force you have to apply to get it right.

With the process of de-encrypting the DVD, are you sure that it doesn't

Re: AUGH! Ibook G4 with fried hard drive

2005-08-31 Thread Henry Taylor
Not to miss the point of this post, but is the iBook still under
warrenty? If so, replacement is free. If not, there are guides
(pbfixit) that give instructions on how to take apart an iBook ( or
any other book). That being said, taking apart an iBook is no small
feat, though it can be done. I've not priced an airport card or
bluetooth module, though both can be found online.

Good luck on whatever route you take, wish I could be more help.

Henry

I bought an Ibook so as not to be tempted to muck around in its
innards. Now, its hard drive is fried. TTP4 indicates that
everything else is fine, but not even DiskWarrior has been able to
retrieve anything from the HD. There's nothing irreplaceable on it,
so I figured I'd just replace it. The only local apple service
provider wants $75 JUST TO LOOK AT IT! I'm on disability, so doing
things as cheaply as possible is a necessity. How difficult is it
to get an Ibook open? Once I have it open, what issues do I need to
be aware of in replacing the HD? If I've got the sucker open, I'd
like to drop in an airport card and maybe a blue tooth module, but
I've got to balance total costs of replacement and upgrades against
throwing in the towel and just buying a new Ibook, since the new
ones have airport and bluetooth standard. Any advice appreciated.

peace, love, and joy,

Samantha

Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/ OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-16 Thread G Henry Taylor
Try the crossover ethernet cable. I connect my Lombard and iBook (700)
via a plain ethernet cable. The iBook will recognize the cable
automatically. In the book you wish to copy files from, set file
sharing on and firewall off. You should see the book in your network.
This works for me, but I have 10.3.9 on both machines.

Hope this helps,

Henry

What about firewire disc mode? I'm not sure what powerbooks had what
capabilities, but I think they both support firewire, don't they? You
boot one machine holding down the t key I think then that machine
looks like a firewire drive to the other machine. That would be the
fastest and easiest I think. You just connect them with a standard 6
pin firewire cable. Faster than a crossover ethernet cable.

Firewire disc mode? Unfortunately, I only have firewire on the iBook
500,

and not on the Wallstreet II.

The Wallstreet II has USB, but only through a PCMCIA card which I have
inserted. . .

How would you recommend doing this with either an Ethernet crossover
cable

or a pair of USB cables routed through a USB hub?

Alternatively, what else might I try?

All the best,
stanton

Dear List-mate,

How do I connect two PowerBooks, a Wallstreet II running OS 9.2.2 and
an
iBook 500, running OS X 10.3.9 to one another, so that I can copy
files from

one to the other?

Re: Subject: Utilities

2005-08-01 Thread Henry Taylor
The program is called Onyx. I'm using version 5.2 on both my Lombard
(400, 384, 30 gig) and my iBook (G3 700, 640, 20 gig). Both run 10.3.9.
Get it at version tracker, just make sure you use the correct version
for tour OS.

Ok, this one has me stumped. I did a google search of OnXy, and while
I found a lot of messages, nothing about what the program actually
does, nor a download site with a description. Nothing on Tucows with
that name either. (And I'm still trying to figure out which of the
disk tool packages I might want to pick up. :) )

Re: Panther molasses troubleshooting

2005-07-12 Thread G Henry Taylor
How much extra weight are you carrying. My iBook (G3, 700, 640 ram) was
running slow also, but I had only 2.x gb left on a 20 g HD. I got rid
of a lot of stuff (deleting some, moving most to an external HD) and
now it runs much crisper. That was an easy fix for me.

Lombard OS X Install

2005-06-27 Thread G Henry Taylor
In a not so small nutshell, I have a lombard and have installed OS X
via a firewire external HDD. All is grand. I repeated the process on a
slightly smaller (30 vs 20 gig) and it is an abject failure. It will
boot to the grey screen and the Apple logo, then it goes to slanted
line (bar) through a circle. I can boot both HDD via firewire on my
ibook and run the OS just fine. The only difference that I can tell is
that the original HD is a clone of my iBook. The second HD was a clone
of the iBook, but then I formatted and did a new install of OS X (this
HD is for another Lombard). The problem seems to be the smaller HD, as
the larger HD works fine. I suspect the OS install is the culprit,
though I can't tell you why. At any rate, help would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: Wallstreet Dual-Boot Issues .....

2005-06-03 Thread G Henry Taylor
I have a friend who is interested in the "Mac experience". Can you
furnish some details of your resale machines.

Henry

On Jun 3, 2005, at 9:54 AM, Pacer wrote:

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

I have a few leftover machines which I need to resale in order to
recoup

the costs of the infamous
"Get-Ye-GF-A-Mac-Laptop-Before-She-Flies-To-Italy" incident.

Well. One of them is real nice, an upgraded Wallstreet to 466 Mhz
and with full RAM. I have Mac OS X.2.8 running on it.

But the screen does this funky thing where the backlight on the LCD
stops working when it boots up. To fix it, all you need to do is hit
the "brightness" button. When it goes to sleep, however, it seems to
not want to come back up.

I have read on Lowendmac.com (I'll find this link later) that if you
boot into OS 9, let it go to sleep, then bring it back up, boot back
into OS X then it should be fixed. (At least until you let your
batteries die while your Wallstreet is asleep again.)

Well sounds easy to fix, yes? No.

I have an OS 9.1 install disk. It is a backup copy of a broken one, so
it is a CD-R.

I can't install OS 9 with it. (Won't boot into OS 9.)

I then tried to copy over an OS 9 folder which works booting another
Wallstreet which only runs OS 9 by copying it onto a Flash Card and
then

back into the OS 9 folder.

No dice. Won't boot.

What I do is go to System Preference-> Startup Disk and then choose the
OS 9 partition with the OS 9 start folder.

I then reboot and it reboots into a gray screen. I then have to spend
the next half-hour to an hour trying to convince it to reboot into the
Mac OS X.2 install CD I have and then I have to reinstall OS X. (BTW,
the LCD Backlight will not work when doing this. Loads of fun.)

I'd really like to resell this computer at least at the same price I
bought it at, maybe more, and I think I would be able to do so if I
could 1) get the backlight working and/or 2) get OS 9 to dual boot on
it.

I could really use the money in order to look into upgrading my GF's
Pismo to use iSight (if possible) or just paying down some credit cards
before I go to law school.

Does anyone have ANY ideas on what I can do???

It's such a lovely machine, I hate to have to sell it ... but the money
man calls. :-(

Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon
