Re: Hotline

2002-10-02 Thread J Cole

I'm using the Hotline 1.8.5 client on Mac OS 10.2 - the native OS X
version - with no problems. I'm pretty sure it's available at
www.bigredh.com (hotline's homepage), but that site seems to be down. I
may still have the installer - email me offlist if you'd like me to
find it and email it to you.

 (Hotline
Client 1.85 works fine in OS 9.) Can anyone recommend a client?

OT-ish: iSync?

2002-09-24 Thread J Cole

Has anyone heard anything about a release date for iSync? The Apple web
site says it will be released in September, and the month is almost
over. Is it coming?

The big question, too, is if iSync will support USB connections, or if
it is Bluetooth-only. Any ideas?

(To sort of pull this on-topic, I'm hoping to be able to sync my Palm
Vx with my Ti 550 and Address Book/iCal.)

TIA

OT: LaunchCFMApp?

2002-07-23 Thread J Cole

Hi all. Just a random question for the more-OS X-savvy-than-me crowd. hehe.

What exactly is LaunchCFMApp? It's at the very top of my process list at
almost all times, is owned by me, and consistently is using about 15-20%
of my processor. It also appears to spawn multiple copies of itself that
consume less.

What is this app? Is it part of the OS, or something attached to an app I
installed?

To tie this thread to G-Books, I'm just trying to find and eliminate the
processor hogs on my TiBook 550, since the fan keeps coming on while I'm
doing nothing but typing in a note database.

TIA

JC

Re: OT: LaunchCFMApp?

2002-07-23 Thread J Cole

Ah hah!

Thanks for the info, guys (Ryan, Laurent). I'll use TOP instead of the
process viewer from now on find out which apps are doing the processor
hogging.

I guess I shouldn't feel too bad about the fan running - I don't have AC in
my house, and summer is keeping things at a toasty 80º or so in my computer
room. I've got the Ti up on a PodiumPad, so it doesn't get TOO warm. The fan
noise (as has been well argued here and on other forums) gets irritating.

Again thanks very much for the info!!

Re: OS X Prefs?

Thanks for the tip, Michael - I tried it, though, and it didn't seem to
work. Do you know where the prefs for that prefpane are stored?

If I was running OS 9.x I¹d simply trash the Energy Saver prefs, reboot, and
be on my happy little way, but I¹m running OS 10.1.5 and cannot seem to find
the preferences for the Energy Saver PrefPane anywhere. I¹ve looked in the
/Library/Preferences and in Users/ME/Preferences to no avail.

I solved this on my machines by resetting the computers' PMU. Press the
small button on the back of the machine, hopefully that will reset it to
 normalcy.

That's the actual preference pane itself (the app that runs under the global
System Preferences application). I'm trying to nuke the preference file FOR
the preference pane.

OS X Prefs?

2002-06-29 Thread J Cole

Hi all.

I am having an irritating issue with my Powerbook G4 (Gigabit) 550. It will
no longer go to sleep on its own. I can leave nothing but the Finder running
and leave for 8 or more hours, only to return to see it sitting there,
screen dimmed, fan on (or off depends on how hot it is outside). I¹ve
experimented with all sorts of different Sleep settings in the Energy Saver
PrefPane. If I choose Sleep from the System Services menu or close the lid,
it will go right to sleep (well, sometimes after a lengthy pause of around a
minute (!!), but at least it¹s not crashing or staying awake).

Anyone out there had a similar problem? How¹d you fix it? Where ARE those
pesky little preferences, anyway? Would trashing them help?

TIA
Jonathan Cole
