Chooser.

I've used my HP PSC 2510 networked all-in-one from my Wallstreet -
9.2.2 - and my PB G4 17 - 10.3.2 - and the 2500 driver is
definitely happier with OS X than OS 9.

Though it did work with OS 9, for both printing and scanning, I had
a vague feeling it made the machine less stable (hard to tell with
my flaky Wallstreet) and every time I shut down it would quit
unexpectedly as part of the shutdown process. Plus it would NEVER
print from MS Word 5.1, though it would from pretty much everything
else I tried it with.

It's a different driver than the 2400 one - at least the networking
part has to be - but sounds like there are similarities (after all,
the printers are, if I'm thinking of the right ones, the same except
for the networking ability).

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions. I really appreciate them.

One unintentional misperception that I left people reading my
original post was that I was having trouble printing from 9.2.2. I
can print just fine from 9.2.2, and the HP supports 9.2 printing. I
just don't like to re-boot, especially since I partitioned this disk
without installing the OS 9 drivers on the OSX volume (doh!), and so
when I boot from 9, the OSX volume is unreadable and I cannot
choose it in the Startup Disk control panel since it doesn't mount at
all (stranded ... in 9.2.2!).

The only problem I'm having with that HP is that it will not print
from CLASSIC (when the machine is booted in OSX and I run an OS 9 ap
and try to print from it), something HP does NOT support. Booting
9.2.2 and running Classic in OSX are two different animals.

The workarounds I'm toying with are

1.) since I rediscovered how extraordinarily much faster stuff runs
when I boot from 9.2.2 (instead of OS 10.2.8) on this old Lombard (PB
333), I may migrate back ... but it will probably turn out to be
unbearably painful since I cannot mount the OSX volume, and will have
to perform some stupid transfers of large amounts of data (from the
25GB OSX partition) to an external volume I don't actually possess,
and then back to the re-initialized OSX partition in order to see it
from an OS 9 boot, OR

2.) buy a copy of Photoshop Elements off half.com (or somewhere) for
$60 or so -- less than 1/10 the price of Photoshop 7 -- to run on the
OSX partition, and leave Classic behind forever (it's the only thing
I use Classic for).

Option 2 sounds easiest and do-able-est, but I am SOO SICK of
bloody Safari's spinning rainbow at every click that I'm thinking of
getting a second mortgage to put myself into a G5. YAAG!

Thanks again!

9.2.2 boot doesn't mount OS X volume

2004-03-06 Thread Jonathan R. Andrew
Standard Apology: I checked the database and didn't see any articles
addressing this, so excuse this repeat if it is one.

Equip: Lombard (G3 333 PB) 384MB/40GB, partitions: OS 10.2.8 (25GB)
, OS 9.2.2 (7GB), non-bootable (6GB).

Problem: When I boot in 9.2.2, at startup I get a message suggesting
I initialize an unreadable volume which turns out to be the OSX
volume. I click no of course, but that leaves me stranded in OS
9.2.2 without a way to re-boot in OSX because, since it couldn't be
mounted, it is not an option in the Startup Disk control panel. I
tried a bunch of stuff to find a way to mount the sucker, but failed
on everything. Of course, booting from the OSX disk doesn't help,
because it doesn't allow you access to the Startup Disk control
panel, and doesn't just boot a base system; it boots the install
system. I finally have had to choose netboot in the Startup Disk
control panel from 9.2.2, which doesn't find a server after a few
minutes, and then boots the newest system it can find on local
volumes.

Anybody know what's going on here? I'm tired of this issue.

Thanks,

-jra

HP printer doesn't print through Classic

2004-03-06 Thread Jonathan R. Andrew
I am running 10.2.8 with 384MB/40GB, and I recently bought an HP psc
2410 all-in-one. I have Photoshop 5.5 running in Classic, and it
prints to the old Epson just fine, but I can't make it print to the
HP, though the chooser sees the HP and it is selected. Everything
looks as it should, though page setup through the print process ...
until I hit the print button and nothing happens. HP says they do
not support printing from Classic.

Anyone with a workaround?

I remember a similar issue with my HP PSC 950. Seemed the problem
was that the Classic and the OS X printer drivers were conflicting
with one another. Try deactivating the OS X driver before printing
in Classic.

Would it do to just delete the HP from OSX's Print Center printer
list (I want to use it from OSX too)? Or could I deactivate the HP
by annointing the Epson the OSX default again? Sorry so slow, but
what would you do to deactivate the HP in OSX?

Your comment is, to me, a reasonable assertion of what is going wrong
here, and it sounds like you overcame this issue.

thanks for anything further you can pass on,

Apple's Mail has no place to set encoding,
In Mail, go to Format and click onText Encodings. Japanese ISO

Ahhh ... but that's where the arrow points to a grayed-out list which
contains the single word Default. Now what?

Japanese encoding in Mail

2003-12-07 Thread Jonathan R. Andrew
Once in a while I have the necessity of sending ISO-2022 (Japanese
encoded) text via email, but have recently found that the software I
currently use does not support it. I used to have no problem doing
this in Eudora, but I use the free mode in its latest incarnation.
Apple's Mail has no place to set encoding, and Entourage (I know, I
know) is having SMTP issues with my server which do not let it send
out (I have never loaded it until needing to send Japanese).

I am running:

G3 333 Lombard, OS 10.2.8, 384 MB RAM

Anybody have a solution?

Thanks,

-jra

Rotate LCD screen?

2002-10-10 Thread Jonathan R. Andrew

Does anyone know of a software way to get a powerbook's screen to
show upside down? I want to put a cheapo DVD player/GPS mapper in my
vehicle (the 7 screen crap-ola they sell [at a circuit city, for
example] would run over $2.5k).

I want to place the PB in a slip-in bracket on the ceiling of the van
so that the screen flips open downward. Kids in back get to watch
Little Mermaid when Daddy isn't using the GPS software.

Any hints, ideas, suggestions?

Thanks,

JRA
