Buy new PowerBook or add a new PC?
I currently have a Pismo 400 with OS 9.1, however, because of a new career that I started, I either want to buy a new PowerBook or add a PC to my inventory. I'm selling real estate and the Real Estate Board website (Multi-list system) is only accessible if you use the absolute latest version of IE and download Active-X. Even PC owners who are not using IE 5.5 can't access the Multi-list. I won't go into how absurd that appears to me. BTW, I'm also a photographer that has a G4 at my studio, the Pismo is at home and for traveling. I don't really want to buy a PC and have two different laptops, but I will if that is the best way to go. I would need one that has a wireless card and Windows XP Pro because our offices are set up for wireless, but we need XP Pro. Don't ask me any questions about that because I don't know Windowsspeak. I don't really want to upgrade the Pismo and would rather buy a 15 1.5 G4 Book. Now to the crux of the matter. Do I buy a PC and have 2 different types of laptops, or, do I buy a new G4 PowerBook and run Virtual PC on it? I'll have more questions about that later. I know that G5 Books will probably not be out until next year and I don't want to wait that long. With that said, what are the chances of a revised G4 Book coming out later this fall? Thanks for any help you can give. One other piece of info is that I'm on digest mode for G-Books. Les -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Is an external Hard Drive a good solution?
I have a Pismo for home and travel and a G4 desktop at my office. I am thinking about getting a portable external firewire drive, 40, 60, or 80 GB, mainly for backing up my important files and also for moving data between the 2 computers. CDs don't have enough capacity aand I don't want to do the DVD thing either. I'm considering LaCie PocketDrives, Maxtor, Iomega and Que (?). Can anyone offer experiences or pros/cons to these drives? Keep in mind that I want a drive that is portable. -- Regards, Les -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OT: Google Spam
I recently visited friends in Germany and was introduced to a friend of theirs who is a computer consultant and self-styled expert. During the conversation, I remarked that Google is a pretty good search engine, to which the computer expert replied, Not so good. Too much spam.. Puzzled, I asked him what he meant by too much spam. He told me that if you use Google, it causes you to receive more spam. This is the first time that I have ever heard that, but I am far from being an expert. So, have I learned something new about Google or, is this guy an expert in name only? Also, on related note, I correspond regularly via e-mail with people in Germany Switzerland and frequently use umlauts (the two dots above some of the vowels). Lately, I have noticed that almost every piece of spam that I receive has umlauts over every vowel in the subject heading. How is this happening? Disclaimer: I know this isn't about G-Books, although I'm using a Pismo, but I don't know where else to ask these questions. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Update Netscape for Pismo?
Curious though...how come you aren't running MacOS X on your Pismo? Because if you are, you get the goodness of Safari right there in the OS. Pismos run MacOS X very well. All you need to do is get some more RAM in there I have 320 MB of RAM. Sufficient for Netscape 7, or not? I'm not running OSX because the software that I use for my photo business only runs on OS 9 for now. They have not updated for X yet, but are working on it. -- Regards, Les -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Update Netscape for Pismo?
I have a Pismo 400, OS 9.1, and am using Netscape 4.75. I am increasingly having trouble loading some, but not all, Web pages and wondering if it might be tied this older version of Netscape. I have a G4 desktop at my office and I use Netscape 7 and it works great. I'm not interested in making any modifications to the Pismo, nor am I interested in using another type of browser. My question is, will Netscape 7 run well on my Pismo as is? Les -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Using SCSI serial devices with Pismo
I had a problem receiving the digests for a day, so I've had to go to the archives and cut and paste to reply to the responses to my original post. Hal wrote: I'm using a Laserwriter 360 with my Pismo and my G4 Cube without problems. I picked up a Dayna EtherPrint Adapter (connects localtalk devices to an ethernet network) on eBay for about $25 and print to my 360 via Airport. I'm not networked nor do I have AirPort. I'm looking for the simplest and least expensive approach. I am definitely not technically inclined. A screwdriver in my hand is a weapon of mass destruction. : ) I've used the Orange Micro firewire/scsi adapter with mixed luck. I finally gave in and got rid of my scsi peripherals a while back. The firewire/scsi voodoo thing was too much of a hassle. You are the second person that has told me about problems with the Orange adapter. Getting rid of my film scanner is not an option. It would cost me over $1800 to replace the scanner. What about USB/SCSI adapters? -- Regards, Les -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Using SCSI serial devices with Pismo
I have some older equipment that I would like to use with my Pismo. The LaserWriter 360 is serial and the film scanner is SCSI. Can I use them with the Pismo and what would I need additionally to do so? If there is a choice, would a USB or Firewire adapter be better? -- Regards, Les -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
