Re: what linux and what kernel for my wallstreet?

2005-11-19 Thread Rajah James
Tried posting this once, didn't see it in the online-archive ( http://
mail.maclaunch.com/Lists/G-Books/List.html ), so I'm trying again.

Anyone have suggestions for a Wallstreet II 300MHz with Linux?
Yellow Dog? Ubuntu?

I don't know about straight linux on PPC, but I run fink and gentoo
(portage) as package managers in OS X, on my 12" pb.

I personally use Gentoo GNU/Linux for my various other non-mac boxen,
portage is very powerful.

I have heard of many people running Gentoo on macs though, as they
have a PPC branch of portage. A quick google brings:

http://www.desertsol.com/~kevin/ppc/

But if you you've never used GNU/Linux, I'd say start with Yellow
Dog. Having never used YDL, I base this opinion on my experience with
Red Hat, which was the distro I lost my GNUginty(c) to. YDL forked
(ported?) from Red Hat at some point. YDL's package manager (yum), is
available in Fedora, and I remember it being fairly easy to use

Which kernel version? I was thinking maybe an older version would
run better on the older hardware, if I can find one.

If your using it as a laptop on-the-go (as opposed to server), I
think that most of the stuff that you'd probably want (proper sleep,
etc.) will be in the 2.6 kernel, aka the newer one.

Security wise, both 2.4 and 2.6 are kept up-to-date, afaik.

But yeah, in general most of the distro's you've discussed have
fairly good docs. For example, Gentoo's is very good: http://
www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml

So good luck, good googling, and always read the docs.

Of course if you do that you may as well replace the CD with a CDRW
while
you're in there.
Do the bezels fit ?

I can only offer a definite maybe. There is a better chance of a
Matshita fitting, although that's not always the case. I put a Samsung
into my icebook, and the bezel sort of fit - I had to shave a little
off the top and move the manual eject button. Same story with
Pismo/Lombard drives, I have a Matshita CDRW sitting around here that
I can't rework the bezels to fit properly.

So which CDRW is recommended for a clamshell? I've got a
Matshita/Panasonic UJ-815B in my Pismo now, and it works great. Thanks
for any help.

Clamshell ibook, dead cd drive: how to install os X?

2004-07-11 Thread Rajah James
The title says it all. I've been given a Blueberry clamshell ibook with
a broken cd drive, which also starts up with the flashing folder deal.
I quit running OS 9 some time ago, and I'd like to load OS X as it says
that this is supported on the spec page. I plan on installing Jaguar.
What is the best way to go about doing this?

The way that I've thought of is to install a spare 9 gig laptop drive
into my Pismo, install OS X on it, then take it out of the Pismo and
put it into the ibook. This seems like a big hassle, so there's got to
be an easier way, right? Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.
PS - While I'm in there replacing the hard drive, how hard is it to
install an airport card? Any experiences with performance?

Re: DVD-R

2004-04-27 Thread Rajah James
I like princo white tops, they are thicker than many of the commercial
DVD's I own and I haven't had any coasters. I've bought two 100
spindles from compcdr.com (_not_ affiliated in any way), but they are
only 1x.

Check out DVDRHelp.com for reports on specific brands with the
particular drive you have.
