Re: Share My Desktop

2004-04-09 Thread Seeker
Since I'm going to help an elderly lady to master a secondhand iMac so
that she can e-mail, browse and Google I would like to master the
 program Share My Desktop.

Ok, I use SMD and Chicken of the VNC. It's easy...unless you are going
through routers at either end, in which case, it can be hell setting it up.
Also, and I am pretty sure about this, you will both need broadband
connections. If I am wrong on this point, someone else please jump in and
say so.

So, before we get into a lot of detailed, step-by-step stuff:

1. Do you both have broadband access?

2. Is either of you running a router?

I can help you IF neither of you is running a router. If you are,
figuring out how to make SMD/VNC work over a router is beyond my abilities
and I won't be able to help.

Let me know,
bob

Re:

2004-03-31 Thread Seeker
If you're throwing other users in the mix, then it will add another level of
complexity, plus the added problem of permissions. Even if you are the
administrator, you don't have access to some folders of the other users.
It's hard to synchronize the content of a folder when you don't have access
to it. Sure, you could enable the root user, but if you synchronize folders
to which you usually don't have access to, you need to be careful not to end
up with a lot of scattered files that are owned by root and are not
accessible by regular users. You might have another nightmare to restore the
 original permissions on the copies.

Laurent -

This is very interesting. I have a desktop G3 and a G3 Dual-USB iBook.

If I work on a file on one computer and would like to move that changed
file to the other computer, what would you recommend as the best way to do
so or would you totally recommend against it???

Many thanks,
bob

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-03-02 Thread Seeker
ut there is another way to look at this. AppleCare must be a money making
business for Apple. Would anybody believe that Apple loses money on their
AppleCare coverage at the prices they charge? I doubt that. I think Apple
makes money on AppleCare. There must be many more people who buy AppleCare
and do not use it for repairs than those who do.

For what it's worth, the magazine Consumer Reports _generally_ considers
plans such as AppleCare to be a waste of money when taken out on _most_
appliances: refrigerator, ovens, microwaves, etc.

However, in a recent issue, they specifically noted that they thought
such plans a wise idea for _laptops_, because laptops are moved about, prone
to injury/damage, and easy to ship back and forth for repairs.

I normally never sign up for such plans, but if I bought a new Mac
laptop, I would.

Cheers,
bob

Some odd behavior

2004-02-28 Thread Seeker
Today I installed an Airport Base Station M5757 (Graphite) and, in my
Dual-USB iBook, an Airport Card 8.2001 and also added a Linksys BEFSR41
Router, v.3.

This has been followed by some very unusual behavior when I am connected
to the internet via the iBook through the above setup.

1. Very annoyingly, every time I turn airport on and then try to
download mail the modem fires up and tries to dial out. Also, when I do a
Restart, Just before the desktop is fully loaded, specifically as the
desktop menubar items begin to fill in, I get an alert message from Internet
Connect saying something like the modem is unable to establish a connection,
indicating that it is trying to dial out as soon as the desktop loads! This
despite having gone to Network preferences Modem and checked Wait for dial
tone before dialing. This is really a pain and something I haven't
experienced since moving to OS X. How the devil do I stop this?

2. I cannot connect to a secure server with the laptop. E.g., when I
go to MacFixit or Apple Discussions and try to log in, an https page starts
to load but then I get couldn't establish a secure connection to the
server message.

I have Repaired Permissions and run Disk Utility.

All suggestions welcome,
bob

Re - Spam volume

2004-02-27 Thread Seeker
people. Another thing that has been a real treat
 is that with earthlink
I was inundated with BAD spam (you know what I
mean) to the tune of 20
to 30 a day. With Verizon I get none, absolutely
 none. I hope I don't
jinx it by saying that out loud on a list. Go for
 it.

Been with Earthlink for several years and get two or three pieces of
spam a day.

Check my Earthlink filter (online, every 10 days or so) and there are
usually about 10 to 20 emails there to delete.

I try to be very careful about giving out my email address too casually,
using a throw-away email address at Mailinator (free) instead.

Check it out.

iBook and Airport

2004-02-24 Thread Seeker
Just joined the list. I have ...

 Dual-USB, 500MHz G3 12 Ibook
 640MB of RAM
 10Gb IDE Hard Drive
 OS 10.3.2

...that I just picked up from my father-in-law which I want to network to my
desktop BW G3 and share a link to the 'net via my DSL modem.

I am confused: do I need just a wireless router OR both a wireless router
and an Airport Base Station (in addition, of course, to the Airport card for
the iBook)?

Many thanks,
bob
