Clamshell rejuvenation

2006-02-02 Thread Terry McCune

Hello all and thanks in advance for any tips/advice.
As a project in my retirement, I'm going to resuscitate my original
iBook. After I replace the dead-as-a-doornail battery, I'd like to
replace the hard drive.
I realize it's a daunting task and have looked up the instructions
many times, but no guts: no glory is my motto.

Here are my questions:
Can any old 2.5 mm drive do?
ATA or IDE?
Is one brand better than another?
How much of an issue is disc speed?

Re: GUIs Re: MacWorld Expo

2006-01-13 Thread Terry McCune

GUIs are rarely more efficient or faster than a CLI. But man is
mostly a visual critter, so a GUI is an easier tool with which to
guide those who won't RTFM.

- Dan.

I can second that statement that man is mostly a visual critter. We
tend to forget that the GUI was designed after people at Xerox PARC
studied the way young children learn. Having taught high school for
30+ years, I can tell you that the vast majority of my students (and
my colleagues) would never look twice at a computer, much less use
one, if it were still a command line device.

Re: Applecare on Powerbooks ?

2006-01-11 Thread Terry McCune

Hello everybody,

I have just had a very frustrating conversation with Applecare and
was told that the keyboard and latch on my Powerbook are not covered
at all.

I am still under the Applecare warranty period and was actually told
by Applecare technical support that these items were covered.

However, in talking with customer care, they have advised me that
Applecare only covers hardware. Are the latch and keyboard not
considered hardware ?

Has anybody here had any problems with getting these two items
repaired under Applecare ?

Amber

OK Amber, no more Ms. Nice Girl. It's time to unleash that inner Junk
Yard Dog that's within all of us.
Keyboard and latches are hardware. Any one who says differently is
rolling a barrel of bushwah.
Ask to go higher on the food chain. Drop hints that you're consulting
an attorney. Mention the Better Business Bureau, the Ministry of
Consumer Affairs (if you're in Canada) or some consumer rights group.

Re: dimming screen

2005-10-31 Thread Terry McCune

On Oct 31, 2005, at 10:56 AM, Peter Saint James wrote:

The display on my 15-inch, Al Powerbook running Tiger
sometimes dims when the computer is inactive for just a few
minutes. I can get it brighten again by moving the mouse or
hitting a key, but this is quite inconvenient and irritating.

This habit is not consistent. It does it some days and not
others. There does not seem to be a pattern to when, except--and
I'm not sure of this--it may be doing it when the computer has not
been booted for several days.

The box in system preferences that refers to automatically
reducing brightness is unchecked. Is there anything else that
controls this? Does it indicate something else wrong?

I've had to deal with this kind of problem on my Pismo.

It could mean that the PowerBook has switched to battery power
due to a loose connection with the power cable, and that the
energy saver options for Battery indicate that the brightness of the
display should be lowered to save battery life.

System Preferences - Energy Saver - Options
check Show battery status in the menu bar

When the display dims, look to see if the status indicates that
the PowerBook is being powered by the power adapter or by the battery.

If the indicator shows that the computer is running on battery power
even when plugged in, try a new AC adapter or try jiggling the connector
of the one that you are currently using to see if the PowerBook recognizes
it (and if the display becomes brighter again).

 --Brian Miller

This may be the problem but my 20 iMac G5, which I've had since May
and which came with Tiger installed, has done this random dimming
from the get-go. My hunch says it's a bug in Tiger.

gotten so out of hand that one teacher has to deal with 145

Oh, oh, Z . Haven't been to high school lately? 7 different classes,
each with about 30 students = 210 students. I'm surprised he only has
to deal with 145.
Also, in many jurisdictions there has been a backlash against fees
assessed to students, so if a keychain flash drive were required,
the school would have to buy it.

That said, I managed a high school Mac lab and hated SCSI connections.

Re: filling out a form

2005-05-06 Thread Terry McCune
Dennis
Did the scanner come with OCR software? (optical character
recognition) Most of them do, and it converts pictures, as you so
rightly call them, into some sort of text document that can be
handled by any word processing program.
If you didn't get an OCR program, maybe hunt around a bit on
the net. There's bound to be some out there.

I'm the guy who asked about over quota on email, and caught a little
flack for asking the wrong kind of question. Sorry, but after a
week of confusion it was you guys that helped. So I'm going to risk
asking another questionable
question.
I thought I could fill out a
form with my clamshell ibook much the same as I use too with a
typewriter. (I'm working with mac os x 10.3.9) So I scanned the
form; but I can't figure out how to fill it out. It's like trying
to type over a picture. I've probably got over 40 hours into this
now and it's not so much the specific form as it is learning how to
do this type of task. I've even downloaded a trial version of
bbedit 8.2. But I'm lost and it seems I've asked everybody and only
gotten blank stares as a result. Is it possible to do what I'm
trying to do? And if so could someone please tell me how?

Sincerely,
Dennis
P.S. Thanks to everyone who helped with the over quota thing. You
made it simple.

Re: New Powerbooks announced / I bought my first Mac today

2004-04-19 Thread Terry McCune
http://www.apple.com/powerbook/

I have ordered my first PowerBook today :-)

Product Name: PowerBook 1.5GHz (15.2 TFT)
Options:
 065-5069 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 with 128MB Graphics Memory
 065-4861 512MB DDR333 SDRAM - 1 SO-DIMM
 065-5068 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
 065-4825 SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
 065-4820 AirPort Extreme Card
 065-4819 Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
(I also got a HP 5150 printer, free after mail in rebate)
YAY

You may or may not go YAY to your HP 5150 printer. I have one
hitched to an eMac running Panther and your clothing could go out of
style in the time it takes to print. It also doesn't start
automatically and I get fairly frequent pen failure messages.
For some reason, it occasionally prints emails that are upside down
and backwards, so that I have to hold the paper up to the window and
read through the back of the sheet. I've never seen that trick on any
other printer.

Hi Eric
Here's a couple of places I'd try
http://www.transintl.com/technotes/installram_imac_2.htm
or

http://www.welovemacs.com/imotrlocupap.html

Howdy:

I need to install additional memory in an original iMac. It's
already up to 384MB (added an additional 256MB when I first bought
it) but I want to take it all the way up to 512MB as I'm running OS
X on it. I've not replaced the upper (not sure that's what it's
called) memory stick and would love some guidance on what I need to
take apart to do so. I have the service manuals for other models
(Pismo) which I've followed to completely disassemble these
machines... so it's not the doing it that's the trouble... it's
knowing what to do. If anyone has some guidance on how to do this
successfully I'd sure appreciate it!

Re: Yo-yo failures

2002-11-02 Thread Terry McCune
I've used the same power adaptor since I purchased my pismo in August of
2000, I've travelled with it extensively with never a problem. but I'll
keep an eye on it now for sure, and oh ya, it's not a yo-yo, it's a puck!
  Canadian eh!

I, too have the original puck (back attya from B.C.) with my
clamshell iBook purchased in '99. I had sparking at the plug end, so
the fix was relatively simple. I wind/unwind it 5 days a week so I
can use it at work. However, I'm careful not to put too much tension
on it as I wind it up.

Can anyone recommend a good third party replacement for this thing
when it goes south?

Clamshell memory

Hi again.

Did I read correctly on this list that the rev. A 300 mhz clamshell
