stylewriter and OSX

2004-07-25 Thread Darrin Hill
I have not tried this yet so if it screws something up
dont blame me! but I found a driver for OSX and the
stylewriter using google. It just transfers the old
unix drivers over to a OSX usable form I think? It
even has an
installerhttp://www.mosx.net/dossiers/images/SW4OSX_1.0.dmg
It requires you to have a usb to serial convertor of
sometype. I dont have one so I am out for now. I
think my old boss has one laying around his office, so
time for a little B-nosing. Maybe it will get the old
image writer to work as well.
heres the link again:

dropped pismo

2004-05-08 Thread darrin hill

Hello All,

Late last night my Pismo slipped from my grasp onto my hardwood
floor.
Landed sideways on a corner of the lid. Popped the lid and DVD open.
What a
sick feeling
Good News: it started up again, nothing physically broken.
Bad News: blank screen, big gouge on top.

I waited for the hard drive to stop making noise and assumed I was
at
the opening dialogue. I typed the first letter of my startup name and
then
my password and it seems to be running OK. I'm at work now with
nothing but
PC's around. Tonight I'll try either Target mode with my desktop or the
external screen with my TV and verify everything is running (except of
course my display).
What should I look for as the reason for the blank display?
(besides my
clumsiness). I have installed a hard drive and airport card and am
not
afraid to open it up but not very experienced with this kind of thing.
A
disconnected wire? Maybe just false hope here but if any suggestions
please
reply direct to me or send a cc as I am on digest mode.

Hello all,
I have traveled extensively across the U.S. in a van with my pismo and
noticed that every so often when I turn on my computer I get a blank
screen. Usually it is caused by my either tossing my laptop too much
while in its bag or just general vibration from the road. What happens
is the CPU card gets loose and then I have to push down and reset it.
So you might try pushing down a little harder than you think necessary
on the CPU card to see if it seats itself better in its slot. This is
a source of my blank screens and could be yours??? If you haven't
tried it, it won't hurt...

importing analog footage into Final Cut

2004-03-07 Thread darrin hill
There are ways to get around the DVstream/DV gap. The best way for me
to explain this is by my technique in Final Cut Pro, which should be
transferable to Final Cut Express...I hope.
If you can get your source into firewire converter, or a camera that
allows pass through than you should have no problem at all in Final
Cut. First thing first hook up your source to your digital camera, and
your digital camera to your computer. now when you play the source
double check to see that it is playing into your camera if it is than
you are in luck. Now bear with me because not all cameras allow pass
through and some need to be set up via their menu to be able to allow
pass through via firewire.
*If you can get imovie to do it than you can get final cut to do it.*
now press command 8, or go to the log and capture menu in final cut.
now if you go to try and capture this footage now final cut will not
recognize it..you need to click uncontrollable device as your source,
it should be set as firewire ntsc right now. this menu will be in your
upper right corner of your capture window just set it to uncontrollable
device.. Now press play on your source deck and see if you are getting
anything. sometimes you have to mess with it a bit, but this will get
video into final cut. Now press capture now and press play on the
source deck and Final Cut will begin to capture your footage, press esc
when you are done or let it capture up until your capture time limit is
reached which is set to 30 minutes by default.
what is going on here is an issue with time code. Final cut reads the
time code of your dv tape and captures it by using that to control the
deck. That is why you can do batch captures in Final Cut while you
cannot in Imovie. When you use capture now with uncontrollable device
selected you are just capturing the stream like in imovie and final cut
goes ahead generates time code for the footage as you capture it.

I do not know for sure if this is correct, but I heard that
Final Cut Express only works with DV. I had the same
trouble with my Beta ED camera, first I went through a
Sony DV camera into the Mac and then a Pioneer
Recorder into the Mac. This was all through Firewire,
iMovie worked each time, but our Final Cut Express
would not recognize it. Hope someone with more
knowledge can help us, I gave up on this 6 months
ago.

Okay - the other night, I managed to copy some film footage from a VHS
tape, through a dv recorder/player into my Powerbook. I was not able
to import it into Final Cut Express for some reason so had to use
iMovie as we were in a rush to get this done.
However, I don't like the destructive editing features of iMovie and
would like to export the footage into Final Cut Express but have been
unable to do this so far as FCE is not able to see the file anywhere
on
the hard drive.

Could somebody please suggest how this is done ?

Thanks,

Amber
