Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-25 Thread jeanbee

Your almost right, I am using an old VCR for the tuner, however it runs
into the Dell 2005FPW 20 inch screen not the PowerBook. The Dell
Screen has VGA, DVI and a S plug, you can switch between them using
a switch on the front of the display and you can also see TV using it's
built in P in P. I have my old PowerBook hooked into the VGA and a
Mac Mini hooked into the DVI. The Dell screen looks as good as my
partners 20 inch Apple display, but it has more functions. The only
thing
I hate about it is it says Dell on the front in Silver letters, so I
took a Black
magic marker and made that black.

I noticed a good deal on a 20 Dell LCD with all those connections ...
I am SO tempted, and like your marker cover-up plan. Does yours have
built-in USB hub, too? ... Is Dell the only one making something like
this? ... anyone know?

Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-24 Thread jeanbee

I personally use a firewire
hub and a usb hub to minimize the cable clutter, and because I had
some minor issues with device chaining (I had an external DVD-RW
drive, Isight, and 3 external firewire hard drives, plus an ipod all
hooked up at once). It's worked out quite well for me. I have a small
stand that my powerbook goes on. I leave the long wall cable plugged
in, and attach / detach the AC brick from that as needed when I move
the powerbook around.

Thanks, Steve ...
I like the idea of leaving the long cord plugged in. Are your hubs
powered? What brand are they? Any problems with them? I've had a
string of bad luck with cheap USB hubs, so that's why I ask ... not
sure which brands are likely to be most reliable.
What kind of stand are you using for your PowerBook? I may just build a
small shelf to put mine on so it's at the same level as my CRT.

Re: Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

The DVI on the Dell is hooked up to a Mac
Mini, so I switch back and forth PowerBook VGA to Mini DVI,
even have a video recorder hooked in to the S plug, so I can
switch to the TV also or use P in P. All the wires are a nightmare
though. Love these PowerBooks.

Brian

Hey, Brian ...
Are you saying you're using the tuner on a VCR to input TV signal into
your PowerBook? If so, what software are you using to view it? ...
Yeah, I can see the wires getting out of hand here, too ... I do have
wireless network, but wouldn't it be nice to have wireless
everything :-)

Need tips for using PowerBook as desktop system

2005-05-23 Thread JeanBee
After a few months with my 15 G4 PowerBook, I so rarely fire up the
Quicksilver that I've decided to try to use the Powerbook as my desktop system
on the rare occasion that I need the luxury of my swivel chair and 21 CRT ...

I love how the PowerBook works with the extended display and have been
surprised at how cool it's been running with it... seemingly, cooler than using
the PowerBook alone, though I can't imagine why that is, unless it's been my
lap and not the machine generating the heat all this time :-/ ... I plan to
run an external Firewire DVD-RW (the PB has a combo drive) and an external USB2
hard drive for storage of customer jobs, and have extended AppleCare ...

If anyone here is using a PowerBook like this, I'd love to hear how it's
working for you and any problems or surprises you've encountered. Are you
using USB or Firewire hubs? External drives?

Thanks,
Jean

Re: Wallstreet charge probs

2005-04-28 Thread JeanBee

My new-to-me Series II Wallstreet 266 definitely has battery issues -
won't charge a new battery in either bay.  Got it to see the battery in
both bays, briefly with lightning charge indicator, then nada...back to
red X through the icon on restart, etc.  PMU reset ineffective.

I'm thinking probably needs new PMU, but that's just a guess.  Anybody
here had (and fixed) similar problems with their G3 'Book?

I agree that it's a crap shoot diagnosing the problem without testing the
batteries in another machine or external charger.  That said, I took a shot in
the dark with a Wallstreet and replaced the Power and Charge Card when
batteries stopped charging or being recognized.  In my case, the problem was
fixed.  It's quite a trip, disassembling the machine to get to the card.  On
another Wallstreet, I was able to fix the problem by simply reseating the old
Power and Charge Card (it was a VERY loose connection, I wonder if that's
common?) ... you may wish to try the suggestion of reseating all possible
offending components before buying parts.
Good Luck !

Re: Wireless but not AirPort

2004-11-03 Thread JeanBee
Larry ...
I'm using an Orinoco brand (gold) 802.11b pc card on a Lombard running OS
9.1. My wireless router is a Belkin that I bought refurbed direct from Belkin.
This setup has worked well with the AirPort software on the Lombard ... other
units on my network include a G3 iMac with an Apple AirPort card running
Panther and a new G4 iBook with an AirPort 802.11g card and Panther. They all work
together just fine, though I did have to play a bit with the Belkin router to
get the best signal range ... for me, this means sitting it on it's face
with it's antenna sticking straight up.
HTH, Jean

I am fixing a PowerBook Lombard or an IceBook

for my wife and she'll probably want it to be

wireless, but rather than spending (too much)

money on AirPort I'm thinking of buying a

standard PC basestation/sender.

Which ones work well with a Mac ? Makes ?

USB or PCMCIA ?
