Re: Macs and eBay
Amber R. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote the following: Hi, This is partially related to my previous question. It appears that eBay is not really that Mac friendly. In fact, in a discussion with one of their live help people today, I was told if you were using a regular computer, you would be fine when I was asking about the sign-in problems I was having. I was told also that I needed to update my browser..although my browser is Safari and I have the latest version. Anyway, it appears that some of the problems I am having are related to my not using a regular computer and not having an up-to-date browser that works with some sites. Amber I've had some minor issues with eBay, but nothing that would create any big problems. I use Camino, and in the preferences (extra download) you can use agent spoofing to fool sites into thinking you are using a different browser. I rarely use it, but some sites will not work at all without using say IE for Windoze. Take care. James aka Sacredsystem -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Eudora Philosophy (Was: Multiple mail accounts)
Thus spoke Frank P. Eigler [EMAIL PROTECTED]1/18/05 I know you can use Eudora for free with ads, but why support a company with a philosophy like that? What the heck is wrong with that? It's called choice. Better than either being forced to pay a fee *or* be tempted to use it without paying for it. I wish *more* companies would do that. I use it this way. Yes, it *is* annoying *some of the time*, but it's nice to have a fairly feature-rich email client for free. Imagine that philosophy being applied to something like Photoshop Elements for or Office? When I said support a company like that, I meant paying for silly bug fixes, not because they have ads. I don't mind paying for something that has new features, but why pay full price for silly bugs? If that is how you reward a company that is your choice, but I want to support a company that respects its buyers. Examine eudora's releases and you will notice a long list of bug fixing. Re: Finder is somewhat back
Thus spoke Lawrence Weeks [EMAIL PROTECTED]1/13/05 Despite the GUI (and some other funkiness), MacOSX is Unix underneath, and sometimes these problems are easier to fix when you think in Unix rather than Mac. So, if you have a second account with administrative privileges, log into it. If you don't, create one and log into it. Get a Terminal up (Applications/Utilities/Terminal). Say your username is fubar: substitute fubar with your real user name. At the prompt type each of these lines separately, pressing Return at the end: sudo su - fubar mv -i Library oldLibrary exit exit The -i option to mv is to make sure it will ask you before doing anything destructively. Next, log out of the administrative account, and log back into yours. The system will recreate a nice fresh Library directory for you. If that fixes your problem, then you can move things from your oldLibrary directory into the freshly created Library directory as needed. Or, just live with the new one. If it does not fix the problem, and you want to go back to the way things were, log out and log in as that other user again, and type in the Terminal: sudo su - fubar mv -i Library freshLibrary mv -i oldLibrary Library exit exit You can delete the freshLibrary directory later if you wish. In the Finder, from your 2nd account, go in /Users/your initial user ID. Then, select Get Info from the File menu in the Finder. Open the Ownership Permissions tab in the Info window. Usually, you shouldn't have access to that folder, but since your permissions were screwed up, I don't know how they would be showing. In any case, click the Details tab to open it. You should now be able to see who is the owner. This is a popup menu and could be disabled. If it is disabled, there should be a little padlock next to it. If you click on it, it will prompt you for your administrator password. Basically, you enter the password of the 2nd account you just created. After validating your password, the Owner popup should be enabled. If you open it, you should be able to see your initial user ID and should select it. After that, make sure that the Access popup says Read Write. Then, click the Apply to enclosed items... button at the bottom of the info window. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click OK. Then, if you haven't enabled Fast user switching, I would suggest you do so because it will be easier and faster to check if the permission change had any effect on your other account. So, if Fast user switching is not turned on, go in the Accounts preference pane and turn it on. Then, you should see a new menu on the right of the screen with your current user name displayed there. If you click on it, you should be able to login in your original account without login out from your temporary account. Try to login and report back what is now happening. Hi, I did what you said, but you mention fast user switching in accounts pane. Is this in system preferences? I don't see fast user switching. Where exactly is it? If it matters, I'm using Jaguar 10.2.8. Ooops! I did assume you were on Panther, no fast user switching in Jaguar. Ok, so, did you try to log out from your new account and try to login into your old account? Any change? Hi There are no changes, and now my password will not unlock my screensaver. Finder Is Back
Hi, After spending most of the very early morning hours playing with accounts and privileges, It seems that my finder is back home. I followed what Laurent and a few others advised, and things seem to be going well so far. I documented everything I did, but I'm not sure what exactly did the trick. My Jaguar and Classic hard drive icons appear on my desktop, but there are two other folders that were on my desktop that have not appeared yet. Thankfully most of my important files were backed up, but I think backing up will be done religiously and more often :-) Should I eliminate my new account that was created during this issue, or should I just leave it ? What can I do to reduce the chances of this happening again? Thanks for your time and patience. sacredsystem -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I really appreciate the help. sacredsystem -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Apple Mail
Thus spoke Tim Collier [EMAIL PROTECTED]12/24/04 I'm really sorry if anybody gets offended by this but Office v.X was pretty good and Office 2004 is VERY GOOD. Entourage is a totally integrated application: mail, calendar, contacts and tons of options on how to use everything to the max. I might add that there is a conduit included to sync Entourage with your PDA. While I still like Apple's Mail App and iCal and Address Book (all work really well). Entourage has them all in one. Addressing the issue of MS no longer supporting Internet Explorerso what! Safari rocks! MS knows that and methinks it's the reason that they aren't moving on with IE. As for Office, nothing compares to it. Certainly not AppleWorks! And I know somebody is going to chime in about 'Open Office' or whatever it's called.it's slow and clumsy. Usually the people who start bashing a high end app suite are the ones who don't have the $$$ to buy itor can't steal it! Are we going to start bashing Photoshop next? This email response is written using Entourage 2004 on a G4 iBook. lol...relax and calm down, we are not dealing with life and death issues here. Use what you like and what works best for your needs. Health and happiness to all, including Entourage users this holiday season. This email response was wriiten with Entourage and sent with Mailsmith using my reliable and good friend G3 Pismo. sacredsystem -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The calendar, project center, and Notes all work together seamlessly. I won't support Apple mail on my Network. I tell everyone if they want me to support their Email account they need to use Entourage. Apple needs to integrate iCal and the Address book into Mail to make it a competitive application. So everyone on your network has to spend an extra $400 just to use supported E-mail, because *you* like it? Jeez, I've heard of BOFH's, but that takes the cake! Gee, lets throw in word processing, photo manipulations and refrigeration of tasty beverages into the mix. We'll call it iMailWordCalAddPhotoFridge. It'll come on 76 CD's, take three hours to install, two electrical outlets and a water connection, and if you spill a coke in the fridge, you lose all your e-mail. What is this urge to have gigantic all-in-one things? I should be able to tell my system what is my address store, what is my calendar program, and what is my e-mail program, and use small, fast programs that are designed to do one thing and one thing well. Depend on common data-types for inter-program communication. If I want integration, then I can do it. If not, I don't have to. Why straightjacket everyone into a single solution? I like Entourage but agree that all eggs in one basket can be dangerous. I have had a few dangerous moments with corrupted databases using Entourage. I like speed and function with the art of simplicity. Entourage really is bloatware, even though it has great tools. I want a program that does just email, and does it well. I am currently using Mailsmith and really love it. I guess you use what gets the job done for you. sacredsystem -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Tiger and G3 Pismo?

Re: OT: Internet Service Provider?
I used earthlink via cable for a few years and had no problems but switched to Verizon DSL last summer because the price was really great, much less than the earthlink. I have had no problems at all, highly recommend Verizon as they do have very knowledgeable Mac support people. Another thing that has been a real treat is that with earthlink I was inundated with BAD spam (you know what I mean) to the tune of 20 to 30 a day. With Verizon I get none, absolutely none. I hope I don't jinx it by saying that out loud on a list. Go for it. Greg Thanks to all for the help. It seems like Verizon DSL is a good choice... -- / \__/ __) ( || || /_ ( || || sacredsystem/ ( o \ (_o/\_/ -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OT: Internet Service Provider?
Hi, I've been a Earthlink user for a few years, and have been pretty happy. I tried their DSL services, but found the price to be too steep for me. I recently spoke to someone from Verizon, and was surprised at how inexpensive DSL was compared to Earthlink. I would greatly appreciate any feedback regarding Verizon services from those who use, or have used Verizon. Is Verizon's support reliable? OS 9/OS X friendly? Sorry for being off-topic, but getting more information from seasoned members will make my decision a lot more easier :-) James -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
