dangling pointer n.: [common] A reference that doesn't actually lead
anywhere (in C and some other languages, a pointer that doesn't actually
point at anything valid). Usually this happens because it formerly pointed
to something that has moved or disappeared. Used as jargon in a
generalization of its techspeak meaning; for example, a local phone number
for a person who has since moved to the other coast is a dangling pointer.

My comments above on CompUSA refer to the 2 Orlando stores. Most of the
sales people at both locations do not know the difference between ram and
hard drives ( I heard one guy stating the memory was 20 GB, when in fact
that was the hard drive).

I have never used their service techs, so do not know how they fair (I would
expect there are good ones and bad ones). I spent many hours in these stores
helping answer questions on Macs to customers and turning on the systems so
they could be shown (most were off, or at the sign on page). While the PC
section was all running as it should be (another gripe, the Apple section
was in the back far corner of the store!).

Thankfully, we now have an Apple Store to go to here in Orlando, and there
may be a second since they are excepting apps on there job site for future
positions in Orlando.

They cover a lot of stuff that Apple doesn't. It's actually a good warranty.
You would have to bring in your machine so that they could test it (5 minute
thing) and make sure it is functioning and it has to be within the
manufacturers warranty still...which I assume yours is.

I believe in Florida that companies can get Apple Care but individuals
cannot. I would go back to Powermax and see if they have an extended

Only that I know it was true when I bought a computer from Dell whilst
living in Florida. Not sure what the actual law is, but Dell doesn't
offer their Complete Care for machines bought in Florida either (and
California, iirc). Seems a stupid law, to prohibit people from getting
insurance on something like that.

Actually what you said is exactly the reason. In FL, extended
warranties are treated as if they are insurance. The state requires
insurance issuers to be licensed, etc. So no extended warranties in
FL. Other states don't consider them insurance and so everybody and
his brother sells them.

I'm not so sure what FL is doing is so bad, in general these things
are a scam although AppleCare is a good deal compared to the cost of
a repair and the actual chance of something going wrong compared to
most of these warranties.

You can buy it from any retailer, or directly from Apple.

Up until a few weeks ago I was the manager of an Apple Service provider in
the Tampa area. What you are saying is true. You can not (as an
individual) buy Applecare in the state of Florida. If you have a business
license with a separate tax ID # then you can.

What it comes down to is that the gullible (or senile) elderly population in
Florida have been marketed to death with offers from insurance companies
(many of them scams) and they lobbied to have these types of insurances
boycotted. Some companies have found legal loopholes in the system, like
CompUSA for example, and they offer their extended warranties, but Apple is
not willing to jump through millions of hoops to comply with the pathetic
laws of a small and insignificant state like Florida (Quoted from an APP
Service Manager in Austin Texas).

I find it ridiculous that even if you go looking for Applecare and beg them
for it they will not sell it to you if you are not a business in Florida.

Go figure.
