Because I live a transatlantic life, I use [EMAIL PROTECTED], which provides my
email address. I've used this address now for about 5 or 6 years, and while
I have changed ISPs and gone without an ISP for long periods, I've never
lost this email address. It used to be free, but now it's about $40 per
year. This email address allows me POP/SMTP services, web access as well as
email forwarding to a local email address. Between these three options, all
my needs are met. As Mac users, we also have the option of a dotMac account,
which, while more expensive, also gives these options, and much more.
Needless to say, I also have a dotMac account, and don't intend to give that
up either. :-) It most certainly is not a moot point to suggest such a
thing. I highly recommend it. I would never go back to being dependent on my
ISP for email services. I recommend it for everybody! :-)
And also as Mac users we will have another option:
http://lowendmac.net/ We are trying to get this done but I cannot
afford to take a lot of time to work on it. Even though I am
unemployed and am searching and interviewing when I have the time, I
cannot break away from other projects to focus on this one fulltime.

But there are good reasons to use a third provider for email. For instance,
a lot of places that provide web hosting and domain services also provide
email services. Also, if you happen to travel a lot, the ability to have
access anywhere, independently of your ISP is handy, and also, should you
think you will be changing ISPs anytime, using a third-party email address
removes the need to ask everybody to change their address book, as well as
the potential for people to lose touch with you.

The reason most people use the email service they have is because it
comes with their ISP. Telling them that a valid solution is to change
ISPs, or look for a crappy "free" email address (that usually means
accessing through a browser) is not a solution. That's like Microsoft
telling a customer that the reason his computer crashes is because he
installed software on it, and if he just removes it or switches to the
MS version everything will be just fine.
LEMLists.com is niether a change in ISP nor a 'crappy "free" email
address' that is accessed 'through a browser'.

Yes we have webmail and yes we are inexpensive but it is not crappy
by far. The occasional outage that goes with the territory in not
being a multi-millionaire so I can invest in redundant hardware,
power, uplink.

The LEMLists.com subscribers in this group alone (I believe there are
some here) would tell you I work on things with the customer until it
is working again.

I suggest using a different email service for the lists then.
Such as??? I am very happy with the N/S 4.8..It's stable and
dependable and also
my wife loves it..I have IE 5.0 on here also but it is only used on those few
sites that I have trouble loading with N/S..I have heard too many
horror stories
from people using Outlook or whatever comes with IE to consider
changing to that
so I guess that I am doomed to continue having to manually
delete/reply to those
useless warnings...
