Re: Connecting stereo to PowerBook

2002-04-09 Thread Kris McGrath

IMHO there isn't a single 'Right way' to do this. If you amp stages are
such that any input beyond your volume's mid point causes clipping or
saturation, then it will sound distorted and choppy. Brian is right about
one thing though, signal to noise ratio is important. Once you have found
the highest input signal without distortion, leave it alone and adjust the
volume from the amplifier. In short, find an acceptable volume on the
pismo, then use the volume control on the stereo. Sounds to me like you
were already on the right track anyway.

This is definitively NOT how you should stage the gain. You'd be better
 off
going middle of the road with both but conventional audio wisdom puts
 the
audio out of the Mac at near max and the volume of the stereo down to
maximize signal to noise. Cranking the stereo up and barely outputting
signal from the Pismo is a recipe for hiss.

I don't think you can make it do what you want. As I understood your

*simultaneously*. Without separates, that would be impossible, unless your
system has some sort of mixing mode.

Well, I could always have an audio CD in the computer playing through
the speakers. It's fine if they can't play simultaneously, but one at
a time is fine.

That raises an interesting question, though. Would I be able to
switch the speakers between the computer and the stereo quickly, so
if I wanted to listen to the stereo I could? Or would I have to
fiddle around with little wires and restart?

If your stereo has a knob to switch between CD and Aux, then it would be
just a matter of turning the knob.

Re: Connecting stereo to Powerbook

2002-04-03 Thread Chrys R. Cruz

I have a PowerBook Wallstreet 233 and I wanted to hook it up to my
Audiovox stereo CD player, so that my computer's sound comes from my
stereo speakers and allows me to use the stereo as normal. I do have
a cord that looks like a two-sided headphone jack, which came with my
14 A-V monitor that I don't use anymore. It allowed me to use the
speakers on the monitor instead of the single speaker on the
computer. Could I use this to connect my PowerBook to my stereo, or
would I need a new connector? I have been able to play sounds from
the stereo on the computer's built in speakers, but that's not what
 I'm really looking to do.

Assuming your Audiovox stereo has an input jack, you should have no problem.
Look for LINE IN or AUX or TAPE on the stereo. The MIC jack won't
do, as it will need a different impedance than what your Powerbook puts out.

The cord you have is a standard 1/8 (or (3.5mm) connection. If your stereo
uses that size, you're good to go. But if it has RCA type jacks, you'll have
to run to Radio Shack or Frye's to get an 1/8 stereo to RCA stereo adapter
cord.

I tried the cord already but all I could get it to do is have the
computer speakers play music from the stereo, not the other way
around. That's probably because the cord only fits into the stereo's
headphone jack, which allows sound to go out but not in. There must
be some other sort of connection that fits in the AUX ports on the
back of the stereo.

Re: Connecting stereo to PowerBook

2002-04-02 Thread Andrew Duncan

The output of a Wallstreet powerbook is approximately at Line Level, which
means you can connect it via a lead with a 3.5mm stereo plug (mini headphone
plug) to two phono (RCA) plugs, plugged into your Aux sockets on your HiFi.
If you don't get any sound, check that the Mute button is not checked in the
Sound Control Panel.
