Not quite sure of what you mean by sharing, but in OS X.2 if you open the Sharing panel in system preferences you can set up just about any combination you want, as long as the volume (external hard drive) is mounted on the desktop, you should be able to connect to the machine over the network and see the drive volume. This might depends on what privileges you have from the server, the Mac serving those volumes. I have no problem accessing any volume on my BW G4 from my PowerBook. Any. But I'm the administrator on both machines.
