I use Fetch and Fugu. Fugu is free but does not do regular FTP, only
secure FTP (SFTP) and secure copy and such.
Fetch is shareware but free for educational use. The newest version
can do both FTP and SFTP (older versions can do only regular FTP).

Both have a nice drag and drop interface and have worked well for me.

Of course, there is also a client (actually, two!) already installed
on your mac: the Finder and the Terminal.

The Finder, in my experience, can be a little bit shaky but is in
principle the most logical thing to use. Just click Go-Connect to
Server and enter the server url. It should be of the form ftp://
something.com
If all goes well, you'll have a volume on your desktop just like any
other and you can just drag the folders you want to your mac (but,
afaik, not the other way around, as the ftp volume mounts as read only).

Cyberduck. It's freeware amd works well. Or Fetch - free if you're a

Like others, I happily used Fetch for many years with no complaints.
When I had to download our entire Web site, however, Fetch turned the
process a long ordeal (slow, stalled or incomplete downloads).

After some research, I tried RBrowser. The only downside to the free
version is that it is a little slow to open and
will do FTP only (not Secure FTP, etc.), although for most users this
is probably sufficient.

The upside is that it is troublefree, much faster than Fetch
(although I'm not sure about current versions of Fetch) and allows
simultaneous uploads/downloads.

ftp won't download entire directory trees, only individual files. You
can use mget to get multiple files, but not directory trees:

from the ftp man page:

Note: mget, mput and mreget are not meant to transfer entire
directory subtrees of files. That can be done by transferring a tar
(1) archive of the sub-tree (in binary mode).

Downloading directory trees on remote hosts are a pain with the unix
ftp command.

ftp://hostname in the Finder is nice, but I've noticed it's unduly
slow. Besides, the other programs allow you to put files on the
remote host as well.

(it's sad, because this is possible. Netscape 4.0 allows 2-way ftp
transfers; making it a very nice ftp client. Later versions made it
only one way, and no other browser I know of has allowed two-way since.)
