Re: Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-19 Thread Chris H .
Greetings list, I am a recent subscriber and first time poster. A few
months ago I bought my first ever laptop/notebook, a 1.2 G4 14 iBook,
and while I'm still adjusting to the kb I love not being tied to my
desk.

The fix it guides previously mentioned at
http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/
also have printable screw guides. You print it out for your model and
it has marked locations for each screw type of each step. I wish I had
known about it when I replaced the HD in a clamshell iBook for my GF's
son, I still have a leftover screw and a vacant screw hole that do not
mate. But I figure if I can do that with no prior experience
whatsoever, someone who has worked on PC's and Power Macs probably can
do it on a modern iBook. I've heard that they are not as difficult as
they used to be.

Regards,
Chris

You will have around 40 screws to remove and you will need to label
them as
to where they go back in.

Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-16 Thread Tim Collier
Dear Listers:

I bought this G4 iBook 1.2 gig about 3 months ago. I love it! It gets a LOT
of use and it seems to be my primary Mac. The only thing I don't love about it
is that it only has a 30 gig hard drive. Mind you, I currently have 21.02 gig
free but a 30 gig hard drive just seem sort of 'small'. If I were to invest in
a bigger hard drive, how hard would it be to upgrade it myself (I've done a lot
of work on PCs in the pastname it, I did it and I've installed RAM and
switched out hard drives on G4 towers).
Is the iBook a bit too compact to go doing this myself? I don't want to kill
it! And, if it's not too difficult, what is a good choice for a replacement?
Lastly, if I needed to have it done at my local Apple storeabout how much
$$ am I looking at?

Thanks,

Tim Collier

This is PBFixit's page on iBooks, it only goes up to the 900 Mhz model,
but I think the gist of it is the same.

According to this http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/nov03/111003.html
report on xlr8yourmac you don't have to remove the lower shell anymore
to get to the hard drive. It is still a long and tedious process. You
will have around 40 screws to remove and you will need to label them as
to where they go back in. One list member a while back recommend using
color markers to mark the screws and holes they go in, using 1 color for
each screw type.

Re: Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-16 Thread Nancy Lawrence
FWIW, I've upgraded (twice) with Travelstar 7200rpm drives, a 40gb and
a 60gb, and I've never had any problems with heat or noise. I haven't
put them in an iBook, though, so I don't how that would go.

Re: Hard Drive upgrade choices

2005-02-16 Thread Tim Collier
Thanks for the link, Bruce. I reviewed it and I think *if* I ever do
contemplate putting in a larger hard drive, it'll be done by Apple.
I had no idea it would be so difficult...big difference between a desktop
and a laptop.
