I received this from Michelle:

Q: How do I convert an existing iTools or .Mac trial account into an
email-only .Mac account? With a full .Mac membership, you can purchase up to
ten email-only accounts (with 5MB of storage each). You can then assign this
email-only account to an existing iTools or .Mac trial account, or create a
brand new address. To purchase additional email-only accounts, go to
http://www.mac.com and click Account in the .Mac menu bar. On the Account
page, click the Buy Now button next to the available upgrade options. Select
the number of additional email-only accounts you'd like to purchase, then
click the Upgrade Now button, verify your billing information, and click Buy
Now. To assign the email-only account to an existing iTools or .Mac trial
account, click the Email Account Management button. Enter the member name
and password of the iTools or .Mac trial account you want to convert, then
click Convert. Please note that once a trial account has been converted, all
the account's data files (except for email messages) will be removed from
Apple's servers. Other .Mac services, such as iDisk, HomePage, Backup, and
Virex, are not accessible to email-only accounts.

They have obviously updated their FAQ, becaue I am pretty sure I didn¹t see
this all when I checked. Or maybe I did miss it because I only read the top
portion and figured it didn¹t apply to my question. Either way, your answer
is in there :)

Re: I'm back...

2002-07-26 Thread Walter R Basil

Kyle,

There is nothing wrong with my ISP. I am still able to get on my wife¹s
iDisk from the same machine, as she is still on her ³trial² account, and I
can access her email as well. So I know the connection is there.

I criticized them pretty harshly on the forums, and also sent some feedback
to ³Billing Feedback² prior to this, asking why I was not getting what I
paid for, and gave them an ultimatum. I expected an answer in ³24 of my
hours, not their business hours² and if I didn¹t I would cancel my account.
If the account couldn¹t be cancelled, I would post my username and password
all over the net. There was also some pretty colorful words, which I
graciously starred out for them so as to avoid word filters (the billing
inquiry had this, not the forum posts).

I can go to www.mac.com, and it recognizes me from the cookies as wbasil.
When I hit the log in button, my username shows up, and prompts me for my
password. When I enter my password, Then I get the page that tells me my
membership has expired, and I can pay $99 to renew it.

The other subscription I am referring to is my G-Book list under
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I just wanted to letl whoever runs that here know, so that
when the mail started bouncing...that is why.

I won¹t get a lawyer...as I am in Kuwait right now, and the price of one
would be far more than the .mac was worth. I wouldn¹t go back to it if Steve
Jobs himself gave me an apology and offered to to me free for life.

I would like to get in touch with someone from Apple to find out if I am
going to be getting a refund. But you can no longer get in touch with anyone
there that I can see. You go to support for .mac in the regular support
area, and it refers you to support for dot mac. You need a membership to get
support for dot mac. My membership is expired.

iTools account under my .mac account. You know, pay the $10, and just
convert hers over to one of my subordinate accounts. They would never

complaining about it in the forums...my account was canceled.

Walter, I can understand your frustration with trying to get a question
answered from .mac tech support. But have you cut off your nose to spite your
face? If you were that entrenched with your email address, was it worth
losing something that was costing you $4.17/month for the first year, that
included 15MB email space, plus the 100MB iDisk, as well as the other
services currently existing and still to come, for a 10MB mail account for
$3.99/month?

Believe me, I am among those who assumed that iTools would be free forever,
and I wish this change was not happening, but I'm willing to pay my 50 bucks
for the first year, and see what other services Apple develops as services
for the .mac users.

forums, them deleting my posts, etc, I found that they had cancelled my

membership. I went to log on yesterday morning, and it told me my membership

had expired, and that I could renew it for $100. LOL

Then my email quit working (username/password not found), iDisk would no

longer mount.

And of course there is no way to get in touch with someone over there to

find out just what exactly happened. I was planning on canceling it anyway,

since they could offer me no tech support as they promised they would. I

would like to find out if they have initiated a refund on my behalf, since

they no nicely canceled my account for me.

You know, I would have gone right on using mac.com for life. They had me.

That email address has been used for so long, by all my contacts: business,

personal, professional, all my sites and lists I am subscribed to, and

financial services. Everything. All they had to do was answer one stinkin'

support question that I asked, and they never did. That1s what their loss

boils down to. Them not answering one question.

So I have re-subscribed to this list under my new email account with

mail.com - $3.99/month for 10 Megs email space. They have been around for

years, and will continue to do so I imagine. I used to use their free email

service.

I must add that I think this group consists of more geritol-equipped whiners
than 1/2 of St Pete, FL. It amazes me that EVERYBODY has to take exception
to everything, like this new .com email service. For cryin out loud, they're
trying to support the LEM groups thru the sale of this. Can we not at least
give them a break, rather than whine about something to the very folks who
help make this listserve happen??

This is precisely why I do not offer ANYTHING to anyone for free. If you
offer it for free, the majority of folks are such morons that they cannot see
the validity of it, and will eventually blacklist you for something you

That's fine, starting with you whining about the whiners :-p

I must add that I think this group consists of more geritol-equipped
whiners
than 1/2 of St Pete, FL. It amazes me that EVERYBODY has to take
exception
to everything, like this new .com email service. For cryin out loud,
they're
trying to support the LEM groups thru the sale of this. Can we not at
least
give them a break, rather than whine about something to the very folks who
 help make this listserve happen??

This is precisely why I do not offer ANYTHING to anyone for free. If you
offer it for free, the majority of folks are such morons that they cannot
see
the validity of it, and will eventually blacklist you for something you
offered out of the goodness of your heart.Personally, I think each
whiner
should be removed from this list untill he/she donates $10 to Dan for the
 development upbringing of this group.

Hmm, the way I read it, I thought he meant his subscription to this list
that was under his .mac address.

Anyone else care to speculate on the possible interpretations?

Her is the exact quote. He is alleging that Apple Killed his account and
even states that he is wondering about a refund. Not his wife's account or
his LEM subscription:

Folks, it's been a rough couple days. After numerous complaints on the .mac
forums, them deleting my posts, etc, I found that they had canceled my

That email address has been used for so long, by all my contacts: business,
personal, professional, all my sites and lists I am subscribed to

Pismo rubber feet, WAS I'm back...

2002-07-26 Thread Tim Gilman

What is worse than incessant advertising is incessant bickering.
 How about a ceasefire?

I second that motion.

In other news; I went to my local hardware store and picked up a box of
3/8 inch self-adhesive rubber feet for my pismo (I had one left, out of
four). They're clear plastic and almost perfect little hemispheres.
Even with the old rubber feet, I used to be able to push my laptop
across tables with little effort. Now it seems I might as well have
just glued my laptop onto my desk.

thought secondly about that. If I did do that Dan would find out very soon and I would
have to remove it. As it stands I do have someone blocked on my server right now, who

And, for the record, the type of line we use is not of the concern of

 always up.

Infrastructure when it comes to lists =always= matters. There are reasons
why ISP's go with T1's over DSL or cable, why they have redundancy, etc...
Heh, been there. Be careful.

Re: I'm back!

2002-07-17 Thread Ryan Coleman

Generally to run an ISP from a residence you're going to need to install a
generator for backup power, redundant connections, etc... It does get
expensive.

True, but we are not your normal ISP. We do have UPS in redundancy,
and we have a connect 10 minutes away that we can run to in case of
an emergency (a big ISP in the Twin Cities).

Do you know anyone looking to invest $20,000+ into a startup? :-)

The smartest thing you could probably do would be to either co-locate your
server ($100-$200 /month) or lease a dedicated server that is colocated
($99-$150 /month).

Yes, but we don't have those funds. That's the problem.

Just saying- running a small server out of your home is no big deal, pretty
cool actually. But when you're taking people's money and offering a service
you have to be really careful. I had a client last week who's email was in
limbo for a week because she got a good deal through a guy who ran his web
servers off of DSL, which is much more stable than cable. :/

I understand, but in the Twin Cities we have all our telecom lines in
the air. Due to ice and other weather issues native to the region. So
cable is the choice for the speed. DSL of that speed for a business
is $300/month. grr.
