FYI--Portfolio 7-new Yahoo list

2005-08-18 Thread John Collins

To all:

After recent discussions around the topic of how to organize photo
collections and that I am working to learn use Extensis's Portfolio
software--I want to inform you that I have started a new Yahoo list on
the subject. I was not able to get much help in my learning process so
I think there is a need--now I just need to get some members and
discussion.

Re: New to list with questions on Pismo

Hi all,

upgrading my G3 PowerBook. It's 400 MHz and has FireWire ports, so

please tell me!)

That is a Pismo.

It currently has 64MB of memory, which I'd like to increase as
inexpensively as possible. I'd also like to upgrade it to OS X. My
questions are:

--Can I upgrade it to OS X? Which version is the best for this
model? Do I need to do anything besides add more memory in order to
do this?

You might need a bigger harddisk. You'll need about 5 Gb free or more.

You can go all the way up to Tiger (10.4.2). I would use Panther
(10.3.9) at a minimum.

--What is the minimum amount of memory I can get away with and still
run OS X. My computer needs are pretty basic: cruising the Web,
email, basic word processing, etc. I was thinking of adding a 256MB
module, which I saw for $28.67 at macsolutionsinc.com. I'm a little
unclear as to how this works though. I know there are two slots.
Can I keep the existing 64MB memory chip and add the 256MB module as
well to bring it up to 320MB? I'd love to add two 512MB modules to
bring it up to 1 GB of memory, but I can't afford the $200.00 that
would require right now.

Adding 256 will do. It is the minimum I'd try to work with.

--I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the
newer wireless technology? For example, could I go into Starbucks
and hook into their network using this model?

Sure.

--Can I use an iPod mini with this computer? Since I do have the
FireWire port, I'm thinking that I could if I'm able to upgrade to
OS X and install iTunes on my computer.

Yes. If you were to use an iPod Shuffle you'd need to install 10.3.9
as a minimum but a full iPod or mini will work with earlier versions.

Also, is there any way to access the archives of previous messages
on the list?

It's in the footers, see below.

Thanks for any tips or advice--it's greatly appreciated!

Well, you have a great PowerBook. It will run a lot nicer with more
memory. 512Mb will make it quite a bit more responsive.

Certainly. The only iPod you'll have any issues with is the Shuffle,
and then only because synching will be veerryyy
sllooww at USB 1.1 speed.

That said, when I got my shuffle, I hadn't upgraded my USB yet; it
just took a long time to synch.

Speed isn't the only issue with the iPod shuffle. There is also an
issue with power. The instructions for my wife's Shuffle says it
needs a Hi Power USB port or 10.3.9 with older ports.

Yes, it's a Pismo Firewire model, also sometimes referred to as
Powerbook G3 2000.

I'm running 10.4.2 on my 400mhz Pismo and it's very snappy and so far
also fairly stable, so I would recommend starting with it. But I
also upgraded to 1GB RAM and a 7200 rpm hard drive (stock drive, if
that's what you have is 4200 rpm).

Yes, you can do that. If you're doing the RAM installation yourself,
be sure to re-seat the processor card very firmly, so much so that it
feels very much like you're doing something wrong and might break
it. You really have to press on it, but do so only in the bottom
right corner. When I upgraded my RAM I didn't know this, didn't have
the processor card seated properly, and freaked out because I thought
I had broken by beloved Pismo. Which brings me to another point,
with which I'm sure someone will disagree. The Pismo is quite simply
the best laptop Apple ever made. It's a great machine, still robust
despite being 5 years old, and very versatile and upgradeable as
well. I love mine and wouldn't part with it for anything.

--I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the
newer wireless technology? For example, could I go into Starbucks

Yes.

That simply means, for example, that you can't use the keyboard USB
port or an un-powered hub.

As for the minimum OS, I forgot about that, but since the Pismo runs
10.4, which runs better than 10.3 did on it, I see no reason to step
back at all.

the public access arena.

I am new to this list. I just sold my Wallstreet 266 Mhz Powerbook and I

It's hard to answer. Why do you want to buy an iBook in the first place?
Depending on your motives, it might justify the price or not...

Yes. Or you can just use the OS 9 installer that came with that machine to

That machine didn't ship with OS X. I have not tried to go backwards on a

Update it to OS 9.2.2, and then install OS X.2. In fact...I just picked up

 it's a g3 500 20 gig 256

It has os x..1.4 on it and I need to have os 9
can I just use the restore disk and add 9 with out deleting X?

Yes. Or you can just use the OS 9 installer that came with that machine to
install onto the same partition.

scotto

Are you certain that you don't already have OS 9 on the machine? Go to the
Apple menu (upper left corner of your screen), go down to System Preferences.
Look at the bottom line in the window (System). Look for the item Startup
Disk. Click on this. The operating systems that are present will show up in
the window (may take a few moments). If OS 9 is there, you can click on it,
then select Restart, and the machine will boot into 9.

If you do have OS 9 on the machine, do you need to boot into 9 or can you
operate in Classic? If you can utilize the latter, you can just choose to
start Classic. Then you can remain booted into OS X and use Classic for
legacy applications when necessary.

Apple's officially tested max is 384 MB. The memory controller can
support up to 512 MB, and other Lombard owners can/have attested to this.

Not too difficult. But be sure its height is 12.5 mm or shorter.

Not necessarily considerable. But no doubt noticable.

: 4-is the lombard able to handle today's software

Yes and no. Lombard runs most stuff all right. But it cannot take
advantage of any Velocity Engine (aka G4) optimizations. There's also
a growing minority of apps that require OpenGL hardware acceleration.
If you wanna use OS X, this class of apps will not run on your box.

Not many complaints about hinge, nothing like the TiBook.

True. The 333 lacks the built-in DVD decoder hardware, unlike the 400.
