It's 400 MHz and has FireWire ports, so I'm assuming it's the Pismo FireWire model (if that's not correct, please tell me!) That is a Pismo. It currently has 64MB of memory, which I'd like to increase as inexpensively as possible. I'd also like to upgrade it to OS X. My questions are: --Can I upgrade it to OS X? Which version is the best for this model? Do I need to do anything besides add more memory in order to do this? You might need a bigger harddisk. You'll need about 5 Gb free or more. You can go all the way up to Tiger (10.4.2). I would use Panther (10.3.9) at a minimum. --What is the minimum amount of memory I can get away with and still run OS X. My computer needs are pretty basic: cruising the Web, email, basic word processing, etc. I was thinking of adding a 256MB module, which I saw for $28.67 at macsolutionsinc.com. I'm a little unclear as to how this works though. I know there are two slots. Can I keep the existing 64MB memory chip and add the 256MB module as well to bring it up to 320MB? I'd love to add two 512MB modules to bring it up to 1 GB of memory, but I can't afford the $200.00 that would require right now. Adding 256 will do. It is the minimum I'd try to work with. --I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the newer wireless technology? Since I do have the FireWire port, I'm thinking that I could if I'm able to upgrade to OS X and install iTunes on my computer. Yes. If you were to use an iPod Shuffle you'd need to install 10.3.9 as a minimum but a full iPod or mini will work with earlier versions. Also, is there any way to access the archives of previous messages on the list? It's in the footers, see below. Thanks for any tips or advice--it's greatly appreciated! Well, you have a great PowerBook. It will run a lot nicer with more memory. 512Mb will make it quite a bit more responsive. But I also upgraded to 1GB RAM and a 7200 rpm hard drive (stock drive, if that's what you have is 4200 rpm). --What is the minimum amount of memory I can get away with and still run OS X. If you're doing the RAM installation yourself, be sure to re-seat the processor card very firmly, so much so that it feels very much like you're doing something wrong and might break it. You really have to press on it, but do so only in the bottom right corner. When I upgraded my RAM I didn't know this, didn't have the processor card seated properly, and freaked out because I thought I had broken by beloved Pismo. Which brings me to another point, with which I'm sure someone will disagree. The Pismo is quite simply the best laptop Apple ever made. It's a great machine, still robust despite being 5 years old, and very versatile and upgradeable as well. I love mine and wouldn't part with it for anything. --I have AirPort installed in this machine. Does it work with the newer wireless technology? Go to the Apple menu (upper left corner of your screen), go down to System Preferences. Look at the bottom line in the window (System). Look for the item Startup Disk. Click on this. The operating systems that are present will show up in the window (may take a few moments). If OS 9 is there, you can click on it, then select Restart, and the machine will boot into 9. If you do have OS 9 on the machine, do you need to boot into 9 or can you operate in Classic? If you can utilize the latter, you can just choose to start Classic.
