Re: OT:Gmail and Mail (and back on topic again)

2005-02-14 Thread Dan Colwell
Thanks to Jason, Timothy, Jan and Marcin and others for the input and
instructions.

I am set up and all seems to be working well with Mail. I set Gmail to
archive after getting it with Mail so everything is saved in 2 places.
After a couple of years with Mail I tried to back up my old mail and
wouldn't you know it, the ONE older email I really need now is nowhere
to be found. It will be nice to save everything. Sometimes my OCD
desires to save space backfires. Once again, thank you to this great
list.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled on topic discussions:
Using 10.3.8 and everything going smoothly. For those with Pismos who
lose their ability to read CD's or DVD's, do you have the LG module? I
replaced mine through Wegener Media and have had no problems since.
Plays and starts up with everything without missing a beat.

By the way, I have an extra module. If anyone is interested let me
know. Would be willing to test it in mine, and if it is in good working
condition, sell it for a reasonable price. It is strictly a
replacement. CD/DVD player but fits the faceplate perfectly. NOT my
original LG.

OT:Gmail and Mail

2005-02-06 Thread Dan Colwell
I have just set up a Gmail account (through Google). Sounds good, with
1GB storage and all.

Anybody have this and set it up with Mail yet? How do you like it so
far?

Googled for this and no clear instructions yet
I have not used Mail that much, it is set up for my Hotmail account
with HTTP plugin by Daniel Parnell. A short tutorial about how to set
it up with Gmail would be very much appreciated if anyone has that
info.

TIA,
Dan-

You have to go to the Gmail settings online, and activate POP mail,
then you can use it like any other POP account

Exactly correct, except that you lose all of the main advantages of
GMail, IMO.

Searching and indexing and labels are all stuff you have to use
directly through Gmail.

1Gb of storage isn't all that useful if you are using POP and
downloading it all to your own account anyway.

IMO/FWIW

I'll start using GMail when it goes IMAP.

Hi Dan,

I suggest you review the guide on gmail page that details the setup. Remember
that you need to enable POP access in gmail preferences first before setting up
the Mail app. I use gmail with Entourage and it works fine - no plug-in needed.
