Re: Palm III to iBook

2003-09-16 Thread Thomas Ethen
That is the problem with the "cheap" Palm type devices! I just paid $70 for
a Palm M130, which runs on their newer OS and had the USB cable and HotSync
cable included, which is a much better PDA than a Palm III and in the long
run costs almost the same. The Palm III will sync to an older Mac with the
din type serial port with your adapter.

Re: Palm III to iBook

2003-09-16 Thread Wayne
I had the same problem, only I owned the Palm lll and purchased a new Ibook.
I liked the Palm lll and did not want to get another pda at this time. You
will need a USB to serial adapter and the serial cable (either the small
travel one, or the dock station). I tried a low cost adapter from Sewell
corp (sewell.com), but they are primarily for PCs, and after 5 days of
trying, I could not get the Palm to hot synch. I found the Keyspan hi-speed
adapter online for $35 (search Keyspan High speed serial usb adapter at
Froogle.com), purchased from Wholesalers-Direct.com. This worked flawlessly
the first time in both 9.2.2 and 10.2.6. Keyspan also makes a usb PDA
adapter, I think the only difference is the transfer speed, the PDA is
slower and may also be cheaper.

As far as I know the Ibook does not have IR ports, so unless you get an
external adapter for this, you will have to go with the usb/serial adapter.

Hope this helps.

Wayne

Heh. Guess I coulda looked harder.

I actually sent Mark a note this afternoon offering him a Palm III cradle
and the MacPac dongle for the low low price of absolutely nothin', so all he
really needs to do is buy something like what you linked to in your second
post and he'll be all set. He's still going to end up paying more for the
cable than for the Palm. though, as far as I can tell.

Palm III to iBook

2003-09-15 Thread Mark D. Chapman
I just purchased a refurbished Palm III. It works like new except it
came with no manuals and no cables. The manuals are not a problem but
I would like a cable so I can backup its memory to my iBook
periodically. The only cable I can find is $50 CND at Staples. There
must be a cheaper option. The device only cost $20 CND (including
taxes). It doesn't make sense to spend that much money on a cable.
Does anyone know of a cheap option for connecting a Palm III to USB
on my iBook?
Can I use the infrared receiver that comes with cordless mice and
keyboards to sync the palm III?
OT: If anyone knows of any good web resources on old Palms I would
happy to hear about those. Feel free to Email me off list about this
as it is not entirely Mac related.
Thanks, Mark
