Good point Jeff.
I was revisiting the Pismos wondering how the new PB release
is effecting pricing. I'm using a 3400.
So even a Wallstreet would represent
a big upgrade for me.
G3 900 MHz upgrade, and if you go through the CPU Upgrade database
at XLR8YOURMAC http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/, there are more
than a few very negative reviews.
I wonder what is your experience Andrew?

I'd skip the Wallstreet and go straight to a Lombard or Pismo, much better OSX
support, not to mention slimmer and lighter.

Personally, I think it comes down to two things: The need for VRAM and
how much you have invested in Expansion Bay devices. Both of these
factors are usually the make/break upgrade decision when it comes to
moving up from Pismo. The VRAM is the only thing in a Pismo that can't
be upgraded. And once you upgrade, the Expansion Bay Devices have to
stay with Pismo. Plus, yea you can put a G4 into a Pismo, but only up
to 550Mhz for $289.00. Now for me, I bought my Pismo new. . .for
$3,200 and right now there is no need for more than 8Meg VRAM. This
came with lots of extras, but still. . .when my friends bitch at how
expensive Macs are I just tell 'em how much I paid for my PowerBook and
compare that expense with the new ones. If anything, the newer Macs
have gone down by over 50% in the past few years. Another example
(sigh) is my old PowerMac 9500. I paid over $4,500.00 for the damn
thing and now not only can you get a G5 tower for that, but also a 20
flat panel Apple monitor. . .with change to spare! Ok. . .now I'm
depressed. :(

I chose the G3 900MHz as I read a review that said that although the
G4 had the advantages of the Altivec, the fact that the G3 was 400MHz
faster managed to push it ahead in terms of raw speed, for instance,
iTunes encodes faster with the G3 900MHz than with the G4 500MHz,
despite it not having Altivec.

I am sure there will be *some* cases where the G4/500MHz is a faster
chip, but not many.

I have a g4 500 with a gig of ram and I love it, keep thinking I need more

Are you thinking of buying an already-upgraded Pismo or upgrading
your own?
There's also a G4 550 MHz upgrade offered by XLR8/Daystar (and
perhaps others). http://www.xlr8.com/.
On the basis of theoretical performance, I'd go with the 900 MHz
G3. The extra 400 MHz will trump even most altivec-intensive
applications.
So far as I know, PowerLogix is the only company doing the G3
900 MHz upgrade, and if you go through the CPU Upgrade database
at XLR8YOURMAC http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/, there are more
than a few very negative reviews. There are also some positive
reviews, so perhaps it was just a bad batch of chips or something.
If you're thinking of buying an already-upgraded Pismo, then
that's probably less of an issue.
Beyond that, the Pismo is getting pretty long in the tooth. You
might be better off saving your money for a new PowerBook or
iBook. I love my Pismo and I use it every day. However, I don't
think I could justify spending much money upgrading a 4.5 year
old computer. Buying an already-upgraded one might make a bit
more sense but it really depends on your situation.
