Yes, the Pismo is kind of specific about memory. You really have to find
memory that is advertised for the Pismo or for previous, older models.

I got the second 512MB chip last winter from PowerBook Medics, who
have always been good to me, plus they ship overseas. I had
previously bought RAM on several occasions via sites listed through
Ramseeker.com--I do remember that there was an outfit in the L.A.
area that I bought from twice, once probably for the first 512MB chip
and once for RAM for a desktop I've long since sold (probably my
PowerMac 730). Pretty sure it was MemoryToGo.com, since I still have
that home page bookmarked--can't find any old e-mail about it,
though, and all of my old hardware receipts are sitting in a storage
shed 5,000 miles across the ocean so I can't really double check
right now.

I believe PowerBook Medics sells only Kingston RAM--been a few months
since I've been inside the Pismo, but I'm pretty sure what I have in
there is one Samsung and one from whichever Korean or Japanese
manufacturer whose RAM Kingston actually handles.

I managed to install a 512 MB stick (I got it for free from the local
Apple dealer while the 256 low profile for the WS are still rare and
expensive) into my WallStreet and is was recognized as 256: now I
have a 512 MB WS (true 256 and 512 seen as 256).

Pismo memory questions

2005-10-16 Thread Brian A. Miller

Hi,

I've just (re)subscribed to the G-Books mailing list.
I apologize if this question has been answered here in the past.
It may be a frequently asked question.

I have a Pismo (PowerBook G3, 500 MHz, FireWire, circa 2000)
with a total of 256 MB memory.

At some point I will probably replace this with a G4 or G5,
but in the meantime I am looking into upgrading the memory.

According to the original owner's manual
Getting Started With Your PowerBook from Apple,
this machine can be upgraded to a maximum of 512 MB
using two 256 MB SDRAM cards,
SO-DIMM format, 144-pin, PC-100 type RAM.

In doing some Google searching, I have found several
sites which claim that the Pismo can be upgraded to a total
of 1 GB using two 512 MB cards.

Does anyone on this list have experience with upgrading
a Pismo to a total of 1 GB memory ? Is this possible ?
Any problems ?

Any recommendations on specific memory brands / manufacturers
(Crucial, Omni Technologies, Kingston, Samsung, ...)
or online retailers that I should specifically seek out or avoid ?

Responses on- or off-list would be appreciated.

Thanks,
 Brian Miller

Re: Pismo memory questions

2005-10-16 Thread PeterH5322

In doing some Google searching, I have found several
sites which claim that the Pismo can be upgraded to a total
of 1 GB using two 512 MB cards.

Correct.

PC100 or better is required, but just about the only 512 MB SODIMMs
available these days will be PC133, which is also downward compatible
with PC100 machines.

Buy a reputable brand, one which will allow a no questions return,
should there be a problem with your Mac.

Infineon is one manufacturer which comes immediately to mind.

Note to Lombard and Wallstreet owners: 512 MB is the max for these
machines, but the compatibility issues are significantly greater, and
many commonly available low profile SODIMMs will not work in these
machines. Get an exchange guarantee for these machines, particularly.

I like to recommend vendors that list the memory specifically for the
machine in question (Pismo) and for the memory configuration (1Gb
total). It's much harder for them to say it's your fault for picking
the wrong memory (and less likely that you will have problems).

Pismo Memory Problem

2005-09-28 Thread Tom
I own a Pismo with a 900 MHZ Powerlogix upgrade. The computer also has 1
Gigabyte of RAM.

Up until a few weeks ago, all was well. Everything seemed to work just
fine.

Then, I encountered a problem with an external hard drive and used Disk
Warrior to fix it. Whatever happened to the external drive also seemed
to affect the internal drive. Things were still not like before and I
substituted another internal hard drive with OS 9.1 on it.

When booted, I kept seeing a dialog box stating that a memory check
revealed a cache memory problem and I needed to check with a service
technician. I don’t see the same dialog box with OS 10.28 (Jaguar) which
I’ve been running with.

I get the spinning beach ball quite often and the hard drive sounds like
it’s constantly being written to.

Shutting down also creates a very long delay and I just push the power
button to shut the machine down since I have no indication how long the
computer will take to perform all the shut down commands. After 7
minutes, it seems like it will take forever.

Does someone have an idea what might be the cause of this situation?

Re: Pismo Memory Problem

2005-09-28 Thread Robert Eye
I strongly disagree.

IMO, it's a problem with the cache memory on the
Powerlogix CPU card. I've seen this personally on my
iForce card from them on my iMac, and there was a
thread in 2002-2003 on MacInTouch about cache problems
with their upgrade cards (the BlueChip model) - and
problems with warranty support and repairs - for older
Macs. See
http://www.macintouch.com/powerlogixblue.html

This also seem to be an issue with older powerbooks
from the Pismo on down having CPU failures (Apple
cards, too, not just 3rd party) with the cache error
being flagged at startup.

OTOH, I don't recall any major HD issues with my CPU
problem.

If you still have the original Apple card, put it in
and see if the problem returns. I'll bet everything
will be fine, as long as the Apple card was ok before
the upgrade.

(FWIW: It got to the point where my iMac wouldn't even
boot with the cache turned on - they have a software
tool that allows you to turn the cache on and off, or
set the speed. I sent it in under warranty (it was
less than a year old, and had a 3 year warranty) and
they said it tested fine - they said my RAM was bad.
Funny, the RAM worked (and still does to this day) in
my Apple 333 MHz card just fine - running OS X 10.3.9.
So I was stuck with a $400 card still under warranty
that was (and is) useless.)

FWIW (again), I will NEVER buy another Powerlogix
component. Never.

Regards,

Bob Eye
Dallas, TX

Pismo memory ? and dead machine ?

2005-06-07 Thread Will Schoumaker
Pismo has been running great. But with only 192 MB of RAM was over due
for more . Bought 2 -256 MB chips online (ebay) from a Power book parts
place I'd heard of. Stated it was 1 in low Profile RAM could be used in
either slot . It is in fact 1 1/4 in RAM . No big deal if that size
will work in both slots? OWC sells 1in low profile fits both slots ,
1 1/4 in low profile no mention of working in lower slot and 2 in high
profile (top slot only)
I put the new RAM in one in each slot and the Pismo refused to boot . I
finally put the old RAM back in (bottom slot RAM is 1 in) and the
machine is still dead :-(
The only odd thing I did was by mistake I removed the heat sink from
the CPU . I didn't realize the heat sink and cpu card would lift out as
one piece. I put back together carefully and put a very small amount of
thermal grease on the cpu.
I have lots of experience with desktop machines and have replaced cpu's
and you name it in them. This is really my first Power book. Any ideas?
I don't have a clue what to look for. It all looks good to me. thanks

You probably didn't put enough pressure to reseat the processor
daughtercard. I know that it is scary but you really have to push hard to
make sure it is properly seated. Try to apply pressure in the lower right
corner because that's where the connector to the motherboard is.

Hackers never use flowcharts, consider them extremely silly, and associate
them with COBOL programmers, card wallopers, and other lower forms of life.
This attitude follows from the observations that flowcharts (at least from a
hacker's point of view) are no easier to read than code, are less precise,
and tend to fall out of sync with the code (so that they either obfuscate it
rather than explaining it, or require extra maintenance effort that doesn't
improve the code). See also PDL, sense 1.

specific types of RAM you need. Don't recall if they have installation
stuff, but you can find that on Transinternational's site and Apple's.
Look on Apple's site for CIP - Customer Installable Parts and PowerBook
(Firewire). If you have the user's manual that came with the Pismo, it
also (IIRC) has instructions on installation procedures there.
HTH,

Jim Rohde

You can put 2 sticks of- 512k ram one in the upper one in the bottom
slot, this makes the pismo nice and speedy. I have used DMS, there is
a link below to their site, OWC also carrys these sticks also. As
said the owners manual tells you how to install, do a search and you
will find sites that show you in video orpictures what you will see
and what to do. It's pretty easy, always a little sweaty the 1st
time.
When reseating the processor make sure the green clips on the left
side (facing the computer) go into their slot. This is important to
reseating the processor. Don't be afraid to push down to hard.

How too install

DMS price, do some checking, prices change, but these are good folks, also OWC

No, no difference. Unlike some earlier PowerBooks, the Pismo allows
a full 2-inch SO-DIMM in both the top and bottom slots.

I want to add to the J2--What will work and any suggestions about
purchase. Since i have not opened this one, can somebody point me to

Access to the top slot is trivial. Access to the bottom slot requires
pulling the processor card--not too difficult.

But you must take care in removing and replacing the processor card. The 300 or so
some-odd pins are quite small, and I have bent them on occasion!

Hm, the link works for me; but here's some similar links:

URL:http://eshop.macsales.com/Tech/index.cfm?load=powerbook.html

The later has some quicktime movies of the process.
