I keep hearing that heat will release the glue. Epoxy is not a 
thermoplastic. If you heat it, it won't melt, as it gets hotter it 
turns brown and eventually carbonizes.

So what is this glue? Does heat really release it?

Have you tried attaching the cracked LCD to the Display to see if works 
on the 550? Or the good LCD on the 400?

Worth a try.

Well heck with waiting for instructions from other folks, my 
cracked-screen 400 TiBook arrived and I didn't wait to rip it to bits.

I managed to strip the display down without too much damage to the

Yes very much so, it's about 20 + pages long with photo and a step by 
step how to, full of tips and how to avoid
the obvious pitfalls. It's a REAL step by step guide, not a Apple 
"chilton" Book!

As for the hinge fix, I've heard from a few people who've done it 
themselves
and the consensus is that it's hard, but doable, and you will end up 
with a
screen bezel/frame that may have a slightly "homey" look, i.e. where 
you
pressed it back together with krazy glue. Though perfectly functional. 
Which
to me seems a nice step up from using a hingeless Ti-Book with an 
external
monitor.

Duh indeed! While there's no question those who profit from special 
knowledge have very little incentive to reveal it here, I certainly won't 
let that stop my research. Are you suggesting sir  I quash my quixotic 
query quest and remain in darkness til the end of time? :-))  Really, I 
do expect someone at some point to detail how Apple and others do this 
procedure, "money, barter or bullets" not withstanding.

You might try www.powerbookmedic.com

They have their own take apart manuals. I don't know it they have Ti's yet.
The one for a G3 Lombard was a downloadable pdf file for $10. It was quite

I know what you mean. I've been looking for some info on replacing the hinge
on a TiBook G4/550. Can anyone point me in the right direction for DIY
repairs? I know some companies do the job for a lot less than Apple, but
said prices are still in the $500 range, plus shipping (I'm in Europe).

I came across a G4/550 with combo drive at a good price, though it has a
busted right hinge (the guy uses it with an external monitor and it works
fine). I also see right (and left) hinges selling on ebay in the $100 range.
If I could do the repair job myself it'd be a great deal; there'd be no
advantage in getting a company to do the repair job at $400-500.

I do have some experience in piecing broken powerbooks into good working
Macs, including 1400s, 3400s and Pismos. I've also done screen replacements
on these. Though obviously the TiBook screen is in a whole different league.
I have the Gigabit Ethernet takeapart manual and I can see that the job is
not for the faint of heart.

If anyone wants to advise for or against, please let me know. And if anyone
has any info on replacing the hinge yourself, any and all info would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My story: I bought a 550 with a messed-up display, the LCD appears to 
be
intact though its functionality has yet to be determined. Also I just
bought a 400 with a cracked LCD which appears to be otherwise intact. 
My
"PLAN" is to use the ?good? LCD and the ?good? display case parts to
create one good display. I have the service manuals for both models but
those only reference display repairs as module replacement.

My questions: Can anyone tell me if I'm tackling the impossible, or 
_if_
possible help with some hints, tips, pointers or even just greatly
appreciated words of encouragement? Are there any web sites detailing 
any
of this? I googled for hours but found little, mostly grumbles about 
how
Apple has done the world a disservice with their crummy product design.

I thought the top half of the 2 machines are the same. Can you not
just put the good top half onto the good bottom half with a minimum
of effort, and not attempt to swap the lcd into a different frame?
