Thanks for that long and detailed response. Folks are busy with holiday
preparations now, but as soon as they are done, will try a VNC connection
with ARD and report back to here re how it goes.
ARD and VNC both do remote control of the computer but as far as I
know they don't interact. To use ARD you need the ARD client and the
ARD Appliction. Simlarly with VNC.

Re: Virtual Network Computing

2004-12-22 Thread Peter Stein
You're welcome Bob.

May I conclude from the above that if I have mom...
1. Check the box for Apple Remote Desktop in Preferences > Sharing,
and
2. Check the box for in the resulting window and also check all
the
other boxes that appear in that window, then click ...
...that her Mac is now "armed and ready", so to speak, in the same
fashion it would be had she turned on Share My Desktop?

YES! Apple made it that easy on a recent update - tres cool. Since she is at
the other end, it'll be a charge for her to see you control her mac. Don't
forget to set up the password.

If that's the case then, in other words, Apple Remote Desktop is a
replacement for Share My Desktop, no?

Yeehaww yes!

Do I then run Chicken, fill in her IP address and connect?

Cooking with chicken -
#1 -- insert ip address of mom's location (generally speaking of course, I
take it that you've got this part solid)
#2 -- insert default port for Apple Remote Desktop -- 5900 (on some VNC apps
you will be inserting IP.ADD.RE.SS::PORT, i.e. 24.112.23.111::5900)
#3 -- definitely use a password, and also - does mom have a hardware
firewall (i.e. router/gateway)? If her connection is direct from DSL/CABLE
modem to her Mac, then her OS X will handle the firewall. If not, then the
router needs to manage the forwarding of port 5900 to the Mac's local
network IP address as I mentioned in my first post.
#4 -- click shared display and save password, also, have mom set her desktop
to 640x480
#5 -- connect! After seeing how it goes, try adjusting her display
properties while you are in control, you will see the results of your
experiments immediately and find the sweet spot.

What about Password? Is any needed?

Definitely -- her computer is wide open for outside control, especially with
all of the options checked in the Apple Remote Desktop access privileges
panel.

Thanks **so** much for this info. In all my searching around for a
solution, no one ever mentioned the on-board Apple Remote Desktop as
an
option.

No problem - happy to share, I love it. I've bought a tablet PC on eBay to
use for a VNC client to control both my cube and my desktop PC. I caught the
ARD 'cause it was mentioned oh so briefly when the update occurred and I may
have found more info on it through some research regarding chicken of the
vnc.

I was aware of the Apple software of that same name, which is very
expensive, like Timbuktu, and I was trying to avoid that major expense.

Thanks, again

Re: Virtual Network Computing

2004-12-20 Thread Peter Stein
I've been using Chicken with great success on Pismo --> Cube. I also use
TightVNC on PC --> Cube.

My setup:
Using the cube with no monitor, keyboard or mouse as a MP3 server for my
home. I use either the laptop or my desktop to connect and control music,
updates, etc. This is all within my home network, and the speed is rather
surprising. I have tested from outside my network, using my cable modem's IP
address and making sure that my router redirects port 5900 to the cube. This
works great as well, albeit much slower. I used the built-in desktop sharing
in 10.3.6. known as 'Apple Remote Desktop' in the 'Sharing' control panel on
my Cube - no software needed on that end - thx Apple.

My suggestions:
Make sure the remote computer changes it's desktop size to 640x480 - that
makes a helluva difference. The 256 color change is improvement as well. Try
the Apple Remote Desktop instead of the software the remote computer is
currently using.

Good luck!

stein

I conducted a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) session over the weekend with
my mom. I began by having her set her display to 256 colors and change her
desktop from a photograph to a solid color. After she made those changes, we
both quit iChat.

So, in short:
I can make the connection.
It seems whether she uses 256 colors or thousands of colors on her display,
our connection remains equally slow (remember: she has a cable modem and I
have DSL), so I'm sticking with thousands so I can read her screen.
VNCThing seems to be the best client so far.
Any additional ideas on anything else to try in order to speed up this
connection? I am still puzzled as to why the connection ran so much faster
when I was using a B&W G3 with a G4 upgrade processor that ran at just under
500 Mhz.

The Dual-USB iBook I am now using has a G3 processor running at 500 Mhz.
Would that alone account for the difference???
Many thanks, as always...
Try having your Mom set the display resolution to 640x480 or whatever
is the minimum.

FYI, I've used Timbuktu over dialup and had faster responsiveness
than this. And this was between machines with 604 processors. I
only state this to show that it can be done and realize you probably
aren't interested in TB2 due to cost.

Re: Virtual Network Computing

2004-07-23 Thread Alejandro
Check the following:

- Copy the preferences of all the sharing applications
(User/Library/Preferences) and place them on the non
working machine (on the same place).
- Keep a copy of the old ones for backup.

Who knows.
