Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-13 Thread Matthew Faulds
After some initial problems with batteries we bought a new battery for 466
clamshell ibook and we get somewhere around 4- 4 1/2 hours use with airport.
If watching a DVD you get full film plus about an hour. That is running
latest version of Panther mind you. Watch out for funny battery problems
when updating OS!

I reckon it's worth getting a new battery just for the lack of hassle. Ours
is BTI (Battery Tech)

Okay, I got the airport card for my clamshell, love it to death and
enjoy being completely wire-free. However I noticed with the airport
card, the battery life is seriously diminished. If I plan on using it
without the power cord for any reason for a long time, I'll turn the
screen brightness down and turn the sound off. that doesn't seem to
make a huge difference, but it makes a little bit of one. It says it
will work for like close to 2 hours. Does the battery need replacing
or is this average for an older laptop? I noticed it gets down to a
certain level with the battery displaying in red and then *boom* it
shuts down and goes into sleep mode til I plug it back in.

Any solutions or ideas? Should I just get a new battery?

Sounds pretty normal to me. Two hours with wireless seems good. Better
than I get with my Blueberry! A new battery may help, but I don't think
you will get 3 hours from a new battery while wireless.

Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-09 Thread victoria duggan
Hi I have been using my new ibook for two weeks now and the battery
only lasts for 3 hrs 50 with the airport card fitted and that is a new
book. So 2hr + from a clamshell is good.

I also have a 3400c with wifi via a mac wireless card, with the cd
loaded and wireless being used for the net the best i get from that is
2hrs 30 mins and that is also a new battery,

To save your battery life you need to set the book up to the way you
like but only using the minimal power then the life should increase,
for example the screen only at half brightness, the sound turned down
to a minimum. Also if you have a book with removable drives then take
the cd out and put in a space saver or a floppy drive. If the drive can
not be removed leave the door open slightly the the system does not
keep accessing the drive to check if there is anything there, keep the
hdd spun down when doing text or not doing heavy access. turn off power
to inactive devices IE pcmcia cards etc.

all these need to be taken into account when you use the book, and if
you do then you will find that you will always have enough power for
the things that you need.
