I've changed PRAM batteries in lots of Macs, and none of them had the same symptoms. Most of them started out by showing a Jan 01, 1904 date stamp before leading to more serious failure, but I've also seen them just up and die, unable to boot at all. The triple chime really had me going. But I've got a spare battery that works, so I can try this out. Stay tuned. If this turns out to be the ticket I'm going to be very happy. - web -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: hope of Wall Street revival
Have you tried reseating the CPU ? You also need to remember that if you swap parts, the 250 MHz CPU (Wallstreet1) wont work on the new motherboard (Wallstreet2). thanks, Mad Dog Hi. I may have asked this a while back - three years ago - but it's come up again. I've got a Wall Street that is in nearly perfect condition physically. It's a 13.3 inch screen model, 250 MHz G3 with gobs of RAM and a 32 Gig Travelstar drive in it. And I used it 60 hours a week for 4.5 years. It's like an friend, still. And I love the keyboard on this machine better than any one I've ever used on any other computer. The screen, keyboard, plastics, all look superb, and I replaced the hinges on the screen once so they are stiff like in a new model. But it won't boot. If I reset the power manager about 10 times it will boot, but the next time I start it it may not come on, or it may. In any case, I may have some stuff to fix it now. The other day someone gave me a working Wall Street with bad plastics (broken in places), dead hinges, and no working battery. But it runs. It's a 233 MHz version with the 14.1 inch screen. So I have parts to transplant. My machine, when I try to boot it, sometimes gives the standard chime three times, but weaker each time, and then does nothing. Often it doesn't chime and still does nothing. And rarely it will boot up. So what's the biggest suspect? Motherboard? Charging board (under the trackpad), PMU board (under the top of the case beside the trackpad) or the board that has the power adapter plug on it. All of them are identical board numbers, except the motherboard may have a different bus speed. I forget. In any case, I'm ready to do a swap out of parts to get my old baby going again, but I'm looking for an educated guess from anyone who may have heard the multiple boot chime before. After initial swaps today I'm inclined to think it's the motherboard, but I'm not sure. Maybe it's something else. Thanks for any wisdom. - web -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... All of these PowerBooks were released at the same time, and the only difference would be that the clock speed of the bus is different. If I used the motherboard from the 233 it has a slower bus speed, so there shouldn't be a problem. The processor clock speed would change (it has to be a multiple of the bus speed), so it might run slower, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't run. I understand how clocking up would be a problem, but clocking down shouldn't be. - web -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: hope of Wall Street revival
I dont believe its a bus speed issue, but a video chipset issue. If you try and use a ws1 cpu on a ws2 motherboard, it works fine except you get no video out. I think this due to the ROMs on the ws1 cpu not understanding the newer video chipset on the ws2 cpu. I did try the 66/233/no L2 cache ws1 cpu on the ws2 mobo, and it didnt help. I am in the process of transplanting ROMs to see if I am correct with my theory. Mad Dog At 12:58 AM + 6/20/05, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Have you tried reseating the CPU ?
