Sorry that this is a bit 'after the fact' - but I would like to
eulogise about a product introduced to me by a puppet maker - Zip
Kicker is a superglue catalyst. It's available under different brands
but that's the one I know. You can get the same result as epoxy in
seconds! Spot of glue in the head, drip of catalyst on the driver,
bring them together and an exothermic 3 seconds pause gives a solid
fusion. You get multiple chances with fresh applications.

Brilliant get out of trouble stuff!

A big thank you to all who responded to my list. I tried the
needle-nosed pliers as suggested by Ryan and it worked (I'll keep the
other solutions in mind in case this happens again, though).
Now, does anyone know where I can get a replacement screw?

Check with PowerBook Parts http://www.pbparts.com/. They may not want to
sell them to you unless you order for a minimum amount, but other than that,
I don't know where you could find those specific screws...

Yeah, it's the least-damaging option, and I always consider that
first (then I find a replacement screw at a home depot or other
hardware store).

I would take the screw in and tell them you need an exact duplicate
in everything but the head type (T, Hex, Phillips, Standard, etc).

I have done a lot of work on powerbooks out of warranty that I have a
solution for almost every problem. My powerbook 5300 (after the RMA
issue was fixed) was taken apart about 30 times in the next two
years. I eventually sold it off at the same price in 2002 that I paid
for it in 1999. Of course, I had upgraded the display to Active
Matrix, put in a ethernet/video card, second battery, new trackpad,
new power adapter... I put about $300 into it in 3 months to sell it
for $350.

That would take patience, but DAMN will I use that technique in the

 Great idea!

Yeah, don't plan to hold the screwdriver till the epoxy sets. You need
to rig a small fixture (a folded piece of cardboard, or even a toilet
pater tube and a little tape) so you can do something else while the
epoxy sets. All that's needed is something to hold the bits steady
during the cure.

Screw problem

anyone has ideas on removing a screw with a worn-out head?

Go to a good hardware store or an auto parts store and get a small
'easy out' and a drill bit to match. The easy out is a small wedge
shaped screw with a reverse thread. You drill a small hole in the
center of the phillips head 'X' on top of the screw and the easy out
screws into the hole. The wedge shape quickly gets jammed in the
hole and continued turning unscrews the damaged screw. Bring the
laptop with you to show how small the screw is. Easy - - - - -
Out!

No, don't do that. Please. Filings will get onto the board and likely
cause shorts.

That was why I never offered that idea. That is the very last resort.

I would like to defer to Kyle for an answer to this.

 Kyle?

Just blow the machine out with compressed air after doing it, and before
putting any power load on it and it will be fine.
