I've got 4 of these little suckers and I just love 'em.

I've only got one. My TiBook's original 10 GB Toshiba drives lives inside
it. Very nice case. Bus powered. Recommended.

But the hitch is this - it's apparently cheaper to buy the 40+ GB drive
IN the external enclosure than to buy just the drive (for internal use)
 and an empty enclosure.

Suggestions for upgrading Pismo HD?

2002-10-24 Thread James Rohde
Hi all,

I've been considering (when the funds are saved up) upgrading my Pismo's
'10GB' Toshiba drive. However, not wanting to waste the old drive (heck,
I still have my old 80 _MB_ drive from my now non-working IIcx!), I would
like to get one of the Travelstar 40GB+ drives and a FireWire external
enclosure. I want to put the 9.36 GB into the enclosure and the bigger
Travelstar inside my Pismo. Okay, nothing new here, right?

But the hitch is this - it's apparently cheaper to buy the 40+ GB drive
IN the external enclosure than to buy just the drive (for internal use)
and an empty enclosure. So can anyone out there in G-Books-Land suggest
an external drive that's not too hard to open up and swap out the drive?
(Brand or which Mac store would send along directions on how to do the
swap) I have reasonable direction-following skills and have successfully
taken apart my Pismo into the main sub-assemblies (I'm not a total
techie, but can remove and replace the drive fine) and re-assembled it
without help (or a big repair bill).

So what suggestions can you give me on where to look/buy/wheel and deal?

Jim Rohde

For those who find safety in numbers, Windows
is the safe, smart choice. For those who
simply want the best tool for the job, the
Mac is certainly worth consideration.

Jim,
I've swapped my 12GB Toshiba from my Pismo into a VST pocket drive
case. Easy. You peel back the plastic surround, undo 4 silver and
three black phillips head screws, and you're in business. I didn't
try _too_ hard to get the plastic wraparound back on, and it looks,
okay. But the 20GB I got from the last smartdisk sale didn't look
much prettier when I got it. So a VST/Smartdisk slim drive is an
easy swap -- certainly, if you can install the drive in your
powerbook, the enclosure won't be a problem.
Best,
Joel

Remember the warranty on a pre-assembled drive is usually only 1 year,

Truly, I see no reason to purchase a pre-assembled drive whatsoever
unless it costs much, much less than the separate components.

Dan K

Good point, Dan. I paid little for the 3GB pocket drive two years
ago, and picked up a 20GB one for $85 three weeks ago, both at the
time much cheaper than going separately, but I hear you on the
warranty issue.
Best,
Joel
