TCP/IP over FW (Was FW disk mode crashed host)

My reply doesn't really answer the OP's questions, but . . .

I've not used FW target disk mode, but for fast file transfers I was
mighty impressed with filesharing using TCP/IP-over-FW. I haven't done
any timed benchmarks but Finder copies between a pair of Pismos is
_fast_fast_fast_. Perhaps doing the filecopies using TCP/IP-over-FW
might
work out better?

Whoa, wait a minute... You can do TCP/IP over FireWire?

I remember there being some discussion back when FireWire was new
about doing AppleTalk on FireWire (though I quickly grew uninterested
in that idea and don't know if it's possible today or not), but if
I've heard anything about TCP/IP over FW, it's just a quiet mumble in
some hidden memory...

Please do spill the beans, Dan!

Peace,
Drew

It's built-in to Panther, here's how I enabled it on my Pismos:

System Prefs-Network-Show: Network Port Configs-New...-Port: Built-in
FireWire

You can add TCP/IP over FireWire to 10.2.x via the IP over FireWire
Preview Release v1.1 devkit (see Phil's comment/url above.) You must
sign in at Apple's Developer Connection to DL (free to sign up, includes
DL access to various dev goodies), look for the DL software:FireWire
link in the upper lefthand of the page.

I suppose a X-capable Mac with enet and FW ports could function as a
router, providing DHCP, NAT, etc. for a FW-connected LAN through a FW
hub, though I haven't tried it. The throughput is likely quite alot
faster than 100BT enet, but I don't know enough about how it would
compare with a gigE network. The hardware would be cheaper though for a
small FW net (FW PCI cards are what, $15 each?) I dunno how FW works for
long wire runs, actually I don't think it does work over more than a few
meters. Anyone know the allowable FW cable lengths?

I don't think TCP/IP over FireWire is available for MacOS 8/9.

I guess I should have pointed that out as well. Thanks, Dan.

The current limitation for IEEE 1394 is 4.5 meters. There are
repeaters that can extend this distance. Here's a link for some, in
both 400 and 800 flavors:

http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg30_firewirerepeaters.htm

$49 and $79, respectively.

I don't think TCP/IP over FireWire is available for MacOS 8/9.
Not unless someone besides Apple has written an extension for it.
Highly unlikely.

This is somewhat old news. It's built into Panther (and possibly Jag,
but I'm not sure)

Right now I have a user happily using his toshiba (winXP) laptop (I
know, WinXP and happily aren't two words one would usually associate!)
connected via firewire to his G4 tower which is sharing his ethernet
internet connection via the Firewire port.

You have to add the firewire network connection via System Prefs
Network Network Port Configurations New. If your system supports
TCP/IP over firewire, that will be a choice. Then you can use it like
any other network connection.

(and by the way WOOHOO!!! I can post again at last!!! )
