USB Hub killed two Macs... ???

2005-02-28 Thread Larry le Mac
I am sending this question here, even though it relates to
a couple of iMacs, as in reality it's USB which is the subject
and not iMac.
I have just seemingly killed (?) two Bondi iMacs by plugging
a powered USB hub in.
Prior to using the hub, they both worked fine, now they
won't start up at all. I can hear the click of the PSU when
I plug in the power cable, but even pressing the button on
the front with nothing else plugged in, nothing happens.
It's a TopCom USB 2.0 (1.1 compatible) powered hub with
4 ports, so nothing out of the ordinary but I am 100% sure
that it was the hub that caused the fault(s).
1. What could have happened to the iMacs ?
Can they be fixed ?
Any checks to be made ?
2. Is it likely to be a faulty hub, or is there some incompatibility
(though there shouldn't be) ?

2005-02-28 Thread Ben Parkhurst
Did you have the computer on when you plugged it in? Sometimes with
powered hubs you are not supposed to plug them in when the computer is
on. If it really did fry them, I would call and ask for the company to
pay for the damage, because that is unacceptable.

Re: USB Hub killed two Macs... ???

2005-02-28 Thread Ben Parkhurst
When I worked at a computer store and USB first came out, I was told
by an Intel rep that powered hubs should be plugged in when the
computer is off. I have followed this info since 1997, and recommend
it to anyone who buys a powered hub. Regular USB perhipials are just
fine to hot plug.

Re: USB Hub killed two Macs... ???

2005-02-28 Thread Larry le Mac
To the best of my knowledge (and I have studied electronics
at Uni for 4 years) a powered hub simply boosts the signal out
to the connected devices, and can be used as an unpowered
hub with the PSU unplugged.
It should not affect the computer end of the hub.
Obviously there might be something wrong with the hub,
but still odd IMO.
I had a small brainwave and I'm going to try pressing the reset
button and see if this helps revive the iMacs.
Question (I know this is not the iMac list) is the external reset
switch (tiny resessed thing by the USB port) the same as the
Cuda switch ???

I'm not 100% sure but usually, the reset switch is NOT the CUDA switch. On
my PowerMac BW G3, the external reset switch doesn't seem to have anything
to do with the CUDA switch which is on the motherboard. However, they could
be the same thing.

Here is what Apple says about the CUDA chip:

The Cuda is a microcontroller chip on the Power Macintosh G4 (PCI Graphics)
logic board.

and:

The function of the Cuda chip is to:
? Turn system power on and off.
? Manage system resets from various commands.
? Maintain parameter RAM (PRAM).
? Manage the real-time clock.

UPDATE - USB Hub killed two Macs... ???

2005-02-28 Thread Larry le Mac
Cuda Cuda Cuda!!!
http://mrjcd.com/junk/CUDA.jpg
Yes, Cuda saves the day!!!
Acts as if nothing happened...
I will now be testing the hub a bit more in depth
as I know it doesn't actually kill the iMac(s),
only puts them in a coma... ;o)

The CUDA switch does function as a reset switch but they're not the
same. The external reset switch just restarts the computer like
command-control-power key.
