Re: Can you do the same with usb2? [WAS: Use External FW drive as backup boot drive for Powerbook?]
I was wondering if you can boot off of an external USB2 hard drive. - Rudi My understanding is that since USB isn't shown in the device tree it can't be booted in a normal way. You can select it in Startup Disk but it won't boot. I believe some type of hack could be written to allow USB booting, but none are available AFAIK. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... In my experience with a USB2 external I haven't been able to do it, when you go to start-up control panel, the usb drive is not an option , with firewire it is recognized On Feb 1, 2005, at 3:39 PM, Laurent Daudelin wrote: on 01/02/05 16:20, Rudi Reitberg at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was wondering if you can boot off of an external USB2 hard drive. - Rudi I can't see why you couldn't... -Laurent. Can I do this? How would I tell the Powerbook to boot off of the external drive? If so, What's the best way to install OS X onto the FW drive? [note: all I am looking for is a very minimal installation so I can just boot it and hook up the Powerbook] TjL Simply plug in the drive, format it, and pop in your OS X install CD, select the drive for install, and install OS X. It's a no brainer. Once OS X is installed, you can select the startup disk in System Preferences. If, for example, something is corrupted on your internal drive in your Pismo and you need to boot from the Firewire drive, then after you press power on your Pismo (make sure the external drive is plugged in and powered up), hold down the shift key until you see a blue screen where you will be able to select a drive to boot from. I too use a 75 gig external Firewire drive for backup. Works great. . .hope this helps, Zoltan THE BLUETOOTH (and WiFi) MASTER -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
